Ausstellungen
Ca‘ Pesaro, Galleria Internazionale d`Arte Moderna, Venedig, 19. Although the full moon has always cast a light over Venice, its magic was not fully appreciated until Nerly’s time. He was the first painter to depict the “German” full moon rising over the city of canals, to reinterpret Canaletto’s vedute in atmospheric moonlight, and to show Venice in the evening light to international visitors. In this publication, Nerly’s iconic works are juxtaposed with vedute by Ippolito Caffi (1809–1866) as well as moonlit paintings by Caspar David Friedrich and his circle. By transcending nationalities and media - as the publication also features early Venetian photographs by Carlo Naya - the book offers a nuanced perspective on the development of the myth of Venice as a city of Romanticism.

Trilingual edition in English, German and Italian

United for the first time – spectacular nocturnal scenes by Friedrich Nerly, Ippolito Caffi, Caspar David Friedrich, and Carlo Naya

Nerly and Caffi – two early plein-air painters’ views of Venice

Exhibitions
Ca‘ Pesaro, Galleria Internazionale d`Arte Moderna, Venice, 19 March to 6 June 2027
Museum Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt, 18 July to 7 November 2027
