In this period, both men fled Germany and rebuilt their lives in exile: Strauss in France, England, and the United States, Kraus in France and Egypt. Strauss became one of the century's most influential political philosophers while Kraus, his brother-in-law through marriage to Strauss's sister Bettina, was among the finest historians of Arabic science and philosophy. After years of effort to recover Kraus's papers from Egypt, the long-lost letters from Strauss were rediscovered, making possible this edition of the complete correspondence between these two great thinkers.
The letters show two scholars at work: arguing over al-Fārābī and Maimonides, trading manuscript readings and insights, pursuing grants, visas, and posts, and trying to keep their families safe. The correspondence also shows clearly how much Strauss's thinking on esoteric writing was influenced by the medieval Islamic and Jewish philosophy Kraus knew better than almost anyone, leading to Strauss's publication, Persecution and the Art of Writing (1952).

Written interchangeably in German, English, and French, including much Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek, the letters are reproduced in these original languages with English translations provided by the editors.
