Description

An extraordinary book and unparalleled collection of work, celebrating Kit Hinrichs creative life as he recounts his narrative design work covering over 50 years and all stages of his career.

Narrative Design is a collection of more than 50 years of work from the obsessive graphic designer Kit Hinrichs. To the legendary AIGA medalist, author, teacher, and collector, design is the business of telling a story. It’s not just about communicating a product or a corporate ethos — it’s about contributing to the collective culture of storytelling. Presented in the book are not individual case studies but rather categories of work and graphic approaches to assignments that have wowed clients and dazzled viewers. The work is arranged to communicate Hinrichs’ creative thinking, which always leads to a unique and effective solution to any design conundrum.

Renowned graphic designer Kit Hinrichs has served as the principal of design offices in New York and San Francisco, including spending 23 years as a partner of Pentagram before opening Studio Hinrichs in 2009. His award-winning design experience includes identity, promotion, publication design, packaging design, environmental graphics, product design, editorial design, and exhibition design.

Reviews

"No one marries words and pictures with as much tender loving care as Kit Hinrichs." —Michael Bierut, Partner, Pentagram Design

"Design that looks great today often looks dated in five years, let alone 50 years. Kit's masterful integration of type and image are simply timeless." —Jennifer Morla, Creative Director, Morla Design

"Narrative Design' is a veritable feast of thought-provoking, clever and stunningly beautiful work over the course of an unmatchable 50-year career." —Michael Osborne, Creative Director, Michael Osborne Design

"Kit labels himself a narrative designer or visual storyteller with multiple eye-arresting images on a page. No one does it better." —B. Martin Pedersen, Designer and Publisher

"Kit is one of the most prolific and influential designers in the history of our profession. He and his team have created decades of smart, beautiful, timeless design solutions for an enviable list of clients." —Charles S. Anderson, Chief Creative Officer, CSA Design

"Kit Hinrichs is unique! One can spot Kit's qualities and style in everything he creates. His intelligence, optimism and excellence are always evident. We are the lucky ones: the beneficiaries of his extraordinary vision and talent." —Richard Danne, Creative Director and Designer, Danne Design

"The thing that separates Kit from so many other first-rate designers is that he has the talent to maintain a very distinctive and beautiful style while making it totally appropriate for such a wide range of subjects and purposes.." —Joe Duffy, Founder and Chairman, Duffy
