At the same time, businesses have become more involved with the movement and their leadership has been touted as a better alternative to the assumed inferiority of civil society responses. How has business influence been playing out in the "anti-slavery" movement and what are the implications for international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) fighting these forms of labor exploitation? Based on interviews, online texts, documents, and media content from a variety of INGOs and other organizations in Europe and the United States fighting these problems, Advocacy, Inc. provides a cautionary case study. "Anti-slavery" advocacy has become a new market in which INGOs are pressed to become increasingly like for-profit businesses and the strategies they pursue do not adequately address the driving forces that have created conditions for continued labor exploitation in the global economy. Moreover, some businesses benefit from this scenario, having to do very little to claim 'hero' status in advocacy efforts, while practices that perpetuate labor exploitation continue unabated.

How to teach English language learners has been among the most contentious - indeed, most politicized - issues in American education over the past three decades. Meeting the pedagogical needs of these children, the fastest-growing population in U.S. schools, is a formidable challenge in itself. Joshua R. Greenberg argues that working men's conceptions of household-based masculine obligations informed organized responses to the changing economy in early nineteenth-century New York City. Rather than a particularized class consciousness as the source of working men's identity, Greenberg claims that household issues and concerns guided workplace and political reactions to the new industrial economy.

Although the contemporary breakdown of traditional artisanal households sometimes divided workers' domestic and occupational space, skilled journeymen did not ideologically, culturally, or politically experience a separate sphere of existence. As part of this household-based market engagement, working men perceived numerous obstacles to their ability to fulfill domestic responsibilities. Potential threats came in the form of financial institutions and policy, such as the power of monopolies and the proliferation of paper money. They also came in the form of competition from prison laborers and female and African American workers. In response to such threats, working men used trade unions and labor parties to champion household-based masculinity and protect their roles as breadwinners and fathers.

Consulting a diverse range of sources, Greenberg demonstrates the critical relationship between the household, the workplace, and the nascent labor movement. By placing gender at the center of his examination, he challenges existing scholarship on working men and the market revolution of the early nineteenth century and critiques gender studies that envision journeymen as rowdy stereotypes. Instead, Greenberg treats these men primarily as domestic actors, relating their involvement in politics and the workplace to their household duties and obligations.

Die vorliegende Neuausgabe des Andria-Kommentars des römischen Grammatikprofessors Aelius Donatus ersetzt Wessners Teubneriana von 1902: Basierend auf der erstmaligen vollständigen Sichtung und Erfassung der mittelalterlichen und humanistischen Handschriftentradition sowie der indirekten Überlieferung wird ein neuer kritischer Text des Terenzkommentars geboten. Prolegomena, ein Quellen- und Parallelenapparat sowie Indizes erschließen den für die antike und neuzeitliche Komödienexegese zentralen Text.     

In den Beiträgen des Sammelbands werden Kulturen des Wettstreitens in bildkünstlerischen und literarischen Darstellungen sowie in sozio-kulturellen Praktiken in der Zeit von 1450 bis 1620 untersucht. Im Zentrum stehen Aspekte, die über den humanistischen ‚Kernbereich‘ lateinischer Textproduktion und über die Paragone-Diskussion in den Bildkünsten hinausgehen. Untersucht werden aemulative Verfahren, die abseits expliziter Ordnungsprogramme das Eigengewicht und die Überlegenheit des jeweiligen Gegenstands in Auseinandersetzung mit den Alten (deutsches, lateinisches und griechisches Altertum) und den Zeitgenossen (europäischer Renaissance-Humanismus) zu profilieren suchen. Die Aeneis Vergils (70–19 v. Chr.), ein Epos in 12 Büchern, gehört zu den bedeutendsten Dichtungen der Weltliteratur. Sie erzählt die Geschichte des Trojaners Aeneas, der nach der Zerstörung seiner Stadt durch die Griechen auf Weisung der Götter in die Gegend des heutigen Rom übersiedelt und dort die Voraussetzungen für die Gründung der Stadt schafft. Er gelangt erst nach einer längeren Irrfahrt an sein Ziel und muss dann in einem Krieg gegen die im Lande wohnenden Latiner seinen Herrschaftsanspruch behaupten. In der Person des Aeneas ist diejenige des Kaisers Augustus präfiguriert.

Bis in neuere Zeit wurde die Aeneis metrisch, also in deutsche Hexameter übertragen. Da man sich dabei aber der klassizistischen Sprache früherer Zeiten bediente, wurde die Übersetzung für ein modernes Publikum stellenweise nahezu unverständlich. Die vorliegende Übersetzung ist ebenfalls metrisch, steht aber sprachlich nicht mehr in klassizistischer Tradition, sondern gibt den lateinischen Text im Deutsch der Gegenwart wieder, sodass ein Eindruck von der poetischen Gestalt des Originals erhalten bleibt.

Back-action of aerodynamics onto structures such as wings cause vibrations and may resonantly couple to them, thus causing instabilities (flutter) and endangering the whole structure. By careful choices of geometry, materials and damping mechanisms, hazardous effects on wind engines, planes, turbines and cars can be avoided.

Besides an introduction into the problem of flutter, new formulations of flutter problems are given as well as a treatise of supersonic flutter and of a whole range of mechanical effects. Numerical and analytical methods to study them are developed and applied to the analysis of new classes of flutter problems for plates and shallow shells of arbitrary plane form. Specific problems discussed in the book in the context of numerical simulations are supplemented by Fortran code examples (available on the website).

How do we get to know air? Aeropolis: Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds offers a speculative and interdisciplinary framework to reorient common understandings of air and air pollution as matter “out there.” Aeropolis contests regimes of managing air which ultimately operate toward upholding dominant modes of world-making that are dependent on forms of exclusion and inequity. Instead, Aeropolis proposes that air is thought of as a city, to center its social, cultural, political, ecological entanglements. Drawing upon feminist technoscience and queer ecological frameworks, Aeropolis moves away from solutions toward a methodology of “designing-thinking-making” that redirects and connects our understandings of air—as designers, as citizens—with ongoing struggles for just futures.

Moving through a series of design interventions, histories of air, and theoretical coordinates, Aeropolis thinks with air across its many forms—through smog and dust, bodies and breath, pollen and weeds, and from urban design to geopolitics, polluted environments to open data, parks to aerial infrastructures. It insists that we acknowledge the diversity of air and its relation to humans, non-humans, and environments, both physically and affectively. That we become sensible to air by following its unruliness—by living, breathing, seeing, holding, touching, queering airs.

In this new book, Florian Klinger gives readers a basic action-theoretical account of the aesthetic. While normal action fulfills a determinate concept, Klinger argues, aesthetic action performs an indeterminacy by suspending the action's conceptual resolution. Taking as examples work by Tino Sehgal, Kara Walker, Mazen Kerbaj, Marina Abramović, Cy Twombly, and Franz Kafka, the book examines indeterminacy in such instances as a walk that is at once leisurely and purposeful, a sound piece that is at once joyous and mournful and mechanical, or a sculpture that at once draws one in and shuts one out. Because it has irresolution as its point, aesthetic action presents itself as an unsettling of ourselves, our ways, our very sense of who we are. As performers of such action, we don't recognize one another as bearers of a shared human form as we normally would, but find ourselves tasked anew with figuring out what sharing a form would mean.

In conversation with philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Wittgenstein, and Anscombe; political thinkers such as Marx and Lorde; and contemporary interlocutors such as Michael Thompson, Sebastian Rödl, and Thomas Khurana, Klinger's book makes a case for a conception of the human form that systematically includes the aesthetic: an actualization of the form that is indeterminate and nevertheless rational. The book gives the project of Western philosophical aesthetics a long-overdue formulation for our present that aims to do justice to contemporary aesthetic production as it actually exists. It will appeal to those working in philosophy, art, and political thought.
