Durch den Stiftungsboom der letzten Jahrzehnte sind Stiftungen wichtige Akteure der Zivilgesellschaft geworden. Viele engagieren sich im Bereich der Demokratieförderung und haben das Bestreben, die politische Beteiligung in der Gesellschaft zu fördern. Sie sehen sich bei ihrer Arbeit mit der Tatsache konfrontiert, dass bestimmte Menschengruppen systematisch weniger partizipieren als andere, wodurch das politische Gleichheitsversprechen der Demokratie unter Druck gerät. Mit dem normativen Ideal politischer Partizipation als Bestandteil demokratischer Gemeinwohlvorstellung, aus welcher sich auch die rechtlich kodierte Gemeinnützigkeit ableiten lässt, tritt also ein Gesellschaftsanspruch auf politische Gleichheit zutage, dem sich die Stiftungen stellen müssen.

In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O’Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics.

From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O’Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. Shana Redmond excavates the sonic histories of these communities through a genre emblematic of Black solidarity and citizenship: anthems. An interdisciplinary cultural history, Anthem reveals how this “sound franchise” contributed to the growth and mobilization of the modern, Black citizen. Providing new political frames and aesthetic articulations for protest organizations and activist-musicians, Redmond reveals the anthem as a crucial musical form following World War I.

Die Neuausgabe der Anthologie - in Fraktur - folgt dem frühesten vollständigen Druck, sprachliche und sachliche Fehler wurden beibehalten, aber in den Anmerkungen erläutert, offensichtliche Druckfehler wurden ohne besonderen Hinweis korrigiert.

This volume contains a new edition of the first two books of the Anthology of Joannes Stobaeus (5^th c. CE) that will replace the outdated one by C. Wachsmuth published in 1884.

After having drawn up a detailed list of all the Greek manuscripts of the Anthology, Tiziano Dorandi analyzes the relationships between these witnesses in order to determine their importance in the establishment of Stobaeus' text. A stemma codicum will be drawn for this purpose.

The first two books are preserved in the manuscripts essentially in a largely epitomised redaction. We can get an idea of the textual state prior to the epitome thanks to Photius and several eclogues that have come to us by other sources and in which it is possible to discern probable traces of the structure and content of chapters that are now incomplete or lost in their entirety.

For the first time, the epitome (Recensio breviata) will be published in its own right, separate from the remains that we can assume will return portions of the text closer to the original redaction (Recensio plenior). The Greek text is accompanied by an apparatus reserved for manuscript readings and for conjectures.

This new edition will give an entirely new and more faithful idea of the first half of the Stobean Anthology.

Specific essays focus on anthologies as national metaphors, the controversies surrounding early literary collections, representations of First Nations peoples in anthologies, and the ways in which various editors have understood exploration narratives. In addition, the collection examines the representation of women in Canadian anthologies, the use of anthologies as teaching tools, and the creation of some very odd Canadian anthologies along the way.
