Is there racism against people from Eastern Europe in Germany, Western Europe or North America? Despite the global anti-racist mobilisation of recent years, this question has not usually been asked. This omission is surprising given the long historical tradition of devaluing ‚the East‘. In recent years, the picture has changed noticeably. In Germany, young activists are talking about anti-Slavism and call for their experiences to be recognised. In literature, authors of Eastern European origin write about their arrival and growing up in Germany and the racism they experienced. Painful experiences that were often silenced thus become sayable. At the same time, there are repeated controversial discussions about whether people from Eastern Europe can experience ‚racism‘ at all as ‚whites‘. This issue takes stock of the field of research and at the same time looks at future perspectives.

During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely.

This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.

The first detailed study of “Neo-Antique” architecture applies an archaeological lens to the study of New York City’s structures

Since the city’s inception, New Yorkers have deliberately and purposefully engaged with ancient architecture to design and erect many of its most iconic buildings and monuments, including Grand Central Terminal and the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch in Brooklyn, as well as forgotten gems such as Snug Harbor on Staten Island and the Gould Memorial Library in the Bronx. Antiquity in Gotham interprets the various ways ancient architecture was re-conceived in New York City from the eighteenth century to the early twenty-first century.

Contextualizing New York’s Neo-Antique architecture within larger American architectural trends, author Elizabeth Macaulay-Lewis applies an archaeological lens to the study of the New York buildings that incorporated these various models in their design, bringing together these diverse sources of inspiration into a single continuum. Antiquity in Gotham explores how ancient architecture communicated the political ideals of the new republic through the adaptation of Greek and Roman architecture, how Egyptian temples conveyed the city’s new technological achievements, and how the ancient Near East served many artistic masters, decorating the interiors of glitzy Gilded Age restaurants and the tops of skyscrapers. Rather than classifying neo-classical (and Greek Revival), Egyptianizing, and architecture inspired by the ancient Near East into distinct categories, Macaulay-Lewis applies the Neo-Antique framework that considers the similarities and differences—intellectually, conceptually, and chronologically—among the reception of these different architectural traditions.

This fundamentally interdisciplinary project draws upon all available evidence and archival materials—such as the letters and memos of architects and their patrons, and the commentary in contemporary newspapers and magazines—to provide a lively multi-dimensional analysis that examines not only the city’s ancient buildings and rooms themselves but also how New Yorkers envisaged them, lived in them, talked about them, and reacted to them. Antiquity offered New Yorkers architecture with flexible aesthetic, functional, cultural, and intellectual resonances—whether it be the democratic ideals of Periclean Athens, the technological might of Pharaonic Egypt, or the majesty of Imperial Rome. The result of these dialogues with ancient architectural forms was the creation of innovative architecture that has defined New York City’s skyline throughout its history.

Wenzel argues that institutional and systemic transformation will be possible only through the establishment of structures that facilitate holding those with more power responsible for listening to and addressing the needs and concerns of those with less. Offering recommendations for building infrastructure that enables sustainable accountability, Antiracist Journalism is an important book for everyone interested in making local journalism more equitable.

Antiracist Library and Information Science: Racial Justice and Community presents the scholarship and insights of seasoned academic researchers and experienced practitioners as well as emerging scholars, graduate students, new professionals and activists in the field of LIS on the topic of antiracism. The chapters represent a combination of critical, scholarly and reflective perspectives on the theory, practice and progress made towards the actualization of antiracism in LIS and the creation of racially just communities.

This volume has been divided into three main sections. The first section, ‘Theoretical Groundings,’ addresses the philosophical, ontological, axiological, theoretical and epistemological perspectives on race-based oppression, racial justice and anti-racist values and ethics. The second section, ‘Dimensions of the Problem of Race in LIS and Community,’ presents explorations of the specific problems of racism in LIS practice – racism embedded in the tools and technologies of the profession and its services, in social relations and in the practices of LIS workplaces. The final section, ‘Developing Antiracist LIS and Creating the Beloved Community’ presents practical solutions for realizing the vision of an antiracist LIS and the creation of racially justice communities.

The contributors have provided a response and initial solutions for how the LIS professions can meet their espoused ideals for providing the best services for their communities. This work provides scholarship, food for thought, frameworks, and proposals for discussions for achieving the end of racism in LIS and the creation of just world.

But this argument is either a political contrivance, borne of ignorance or a bold-faced lie. There is no recent data on school inequities, or inequity in society for that matter, that suggests we have arrived at Dr. King’s dream that his “four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Children today are instead still judged by the color of their skin, and this inequitable practice is manifest in today’s schools for students of color in the form of: disproportionate student discipline referrals, achievement and opportunity gaps, pushout rates, overrepresentation in special education and underrepresentation in advanced coursework, among other indicators (Brooks, 2012). Though issues of race in the public education system may take an overt or covert form; racial injustice in public schools is still pervasive, complex and cumulative. For example, many students of color, year after year, do not have access to “good” teachers, experience low staff expectations, and are subject to “new and improved” forms of tracking (Brooks, Arnold & Brooks, in press).

The authors in this book explore various ways that racism are manifest in the American school system. Through a plurality of perspectives, they deconstruct, challenge and reconstruct an educational leadership committed to equity and excellence for marginalized students and educators.

This book is the first collection of scholarly essays to treat the topic of antisemitism in Canada, a complete history of which has yet to be written. Eleven leading thinkers in the field examine antisemitism in Canada, from the colonial era to the present day, in essays which reflect the saga of the nation itself. The history of the Jewish community, its struggles and its fortunes is mirrored in the wider history of Canada, from Confederation to the present.

The contributors cast light on Canadian antisemitism through a thorough examination of old and new tensions, including Anglo-French, east-west and Jewish-Ukrainian relations. Attitudes to Jews in pre-Confederation Canada, French Canada from Confederation to World War I as well as the interwar years, and in twentieth-century Ontario and Alberta from 1880-1950 are illustrated in various chapters. Of particular interest are the examinations of such well-known figures as Goldwin Smith, the greatly admired liberal historian of Victorian Canada, Adrien Arcand, the would-be Führer from Quebec, and James Keegstra and Ernst Züdel, of more recent notoriety. Analyses are also provided of Nazism and Canadian Protestantism and Jewish-Ukrainian relations since World War II. This is a complex and contentious subject; yet, to understand the ideas and forces that have sought to undermine the Jewish presence in Canada is to understand the dangers that threaten any democratic society, and thereby to guard against them.

Is research on antisemitism even necessary in countries with a relatively small Jewish population? Absolutely, as this volume shows. Compared to other countries, research on antisemitism in the Nordic countries (Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) is marginalized at an institutional and staffing level, especially as far as antisemitism beyond German fascism, the Second World War, and the Holocaust is concerned. Furthermore, compared to scholarship on other prejudices and minority groups, issues concerning Jews and anti-Jewish stereotypes remain relatively underresearched in Scandinavia – even though antisemitic stereotypes have been present and flourishing in the North ever since the arrival of Christianity, and long before the arrival of the first Jewish communities.
This volume aims to help bring the study of antisemitism to the fore, from the medieval period to the present day. Contributors from all the Nordic countries describe the status of as well as the challenges and desiderata for the study of antisemitism in their respective countries.

The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a "German character" which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.

Inwiefern ist Kunst antisemitisch? Welche Rolle spielt Antisemitismus im Feld der Kunst? Antisemitismus und Antijudaismus gehören zur gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit Europas seit der Antike. Die politischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Umbrüche im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts bereiteten Weltanschauungen den Boden, die sich in starkem Maße über Feindbilder definierten. In der völkischen Bewegung verbanden sich an der Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert antisemitische mit nicht-christlichen religiösen Strömungen. In der Folge entstanden in Deutschland und Österreich Gemeinschaften und Bewegungen, die den Antisemitismus als Legitimation von so genannten "arteigenen" Religionen benutzten. Bestandteil des synkretistischen neuheidnischen Paganismus ist der Rückgriff auf antike Religionen, während "germanische" Modelle in die völkischen Religionsentwürfe eingegangen sind.

Der Sammelband stellt Antisemitismus als Sozialmythos, als System von Stereotypen und als Glaubenssystem in den Rahmen von Religionswissenschaft sowie Religions- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Die Beiträge vermitteln Einblicke in das gesellschaftliche, kulturelle und religiöse Umfeld, in dem das "Neuheidentum" zu verorten ist, und in die ideologischen wie organisatorischen Verbindungen mit dem Antisemitismus.

The centering of whiteness in English Language Teaching (ELT) renders the industry callous, corrupt and cruel; or, antisocial. Using the diagnostic criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder as a rhetorical device, this book examines major issues with the ideologies and institutions behind the discipline of ELT and diagnoses the industry as in dire need of treatment, with the solution being a full decentering of whiteness. A vision for a more just version of ELT is offered as an alternative to the harm caused by its present-day incarnation. With a unique linkage of discourse on whiteness, language and ability, this book will be necessary reading for students, academics and administrators involved in ELT around the world.

Rubén Darío (1867-1916) stands as one of the great milestones of Hispanic literature, not only for the emblematic nature of works like Azul… (1888), Prosas profanas (1896), and Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905), but also for the linguistic revolution he introduced to the Spanish language, opening the doors to European aesthetic influences through the literary movement he himself named modernism.

The collection is comprised of twelve scholarly essays written by leading Chekhov specialists from around the world.  Each essay analyses an interpretation of Chekhov by one of three prominent Russian thinkers of the Silver Age of Russian culture - Vasilii Rozanov, Dmitrii Merezhkovskii and Lev Shestov. Der psychologische Roman Anton Reiser (1785–1790) ist das bis heute bekannteste Hauptwerk von Karl Philipp Moritz und ein Schlüsseltext der deutschen Aufklärung. Mit diesem Band wird das Werk zum ersten Mal vollständig (mit allen Varianten der Vor-, Parallel- und Doppeldrucke) kritisch ediert und seine Rezeptionsgeschichte reichhaltig dargestellt.

Ein ausführlicher Kommentar rekonstruiert die Entstehungsgeschichte des Romans im Zusammenhang von Moritz’ spätaufklärerisch geprägten Berliner Publikationen seit 1780 und analysiert das neuartige, zwischen Autobiographie und Roman angesiedelte Konzept des Werks. Der Kommentar erhellt einerseits zugrundeliegende literarische Muster und psychologische Parallelen zu dem gleichzeitig von Moritz begründeten Magazin zur Erfahrungsseelenkunde ; andererseits analysiert er die biographischen und realgeschichtlichen Bezüge des Werks. Dabei erlauben bisher unbekannte Dokumente zu Moritz’ Kindheit aus dem deutschen Quietistenzirkel um Johann Friedrich von Fleischbein (1700–1774) erstmals eine nähere Analyse des Werks als autobiographisches Konstrukt.

Ein umfangreicher Stellenkommentar weist detailliert die Bezüge des psychologischen Romans zu Moritz’ Leben und Lektüre sowie zur zeitgenössischen Lokal-, Schul- und Theatergeschichte nach; darüber hinaus erhellt er die zahlreichen Verbindungen des Werks zu Moritz’ sprachwissenschaftlichen, pädagogischen, psychologischen und ästhetischen Interessen im Gesamtwerk.

1687 veröffentlichte der bayerische Rechtsgelehrte Anton Wilhelm Ertl den neulateinischen Roman Austriana regina Arabiae. Darin handelt er in allegorischer Form die Ereignisse rund um die 2. Wiener Türkenbelagerung von 1683 ab und betreibt Propaganda für das Haus Habsburg. Damit war der erste neulateinische Habsburgroman geboren. Dieser Band präsentiert den Text mit Übersetzung und einer Einführung in den neulateinischen (Habsburg-)Roman.
