Regular price $238.00 Save $-238.00This synchronic analysis of the longest narrative passage of the Book of Jeremiah uses a specific narratological method to try to resolve some riddles of the text, e.g., the curious narrative sequence of chap. 32, the "chaotic" chronology, and the intention of the report. It focuses on the characters and their relations, especially Jeremiah himself as mediator of God's word - but also other characters. Finally, the chapters 32-45 are determined to be an original narrative unit.

Auch and noch in Child and Adult German
Regular price $196.00 Save $-196.00"Auch" and "noch" in Child and Adult German is an empirical study of the early acquisition of "auch" (also) and "noch" (also/still) in German, and the adult use of these additive particles in spoken language. It centres around the question of how children acquire these particles, but it also investigates the way in which adults use these particles in order to determine what children actually have to learn and what the input they get is like. Previous studies on focus particles in adult German mainly focused on the semantic and syntactic properties of primarily constructed examples. Based on several corpora of spoken German, this is the first comprehensive study of natural language data that systematically analyses the intonation of focus particle utterances as well as their semantic, syntactic and information structural properties. The study of the child data, an extensive longitudinal corpus of one German child, was carried out against the background of the adult data. It offers a thorough characterisation of the acquisition of the two additive particles that also takes into account results from previous studies on the acquisition of focus particles, mainly on their comprehension. In addition to studying the acquisition of these particles, the author also introduces an analysis of focus particles that emphasises the differences between stressed and unstressed particles, which makes this book not only interesting to researchers in language acquisition and psycholinguistics, but also to those interested in phonology/prosody, semantics, syntax and information structure.

Auden and the Muse of History
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Concentrating on W. H. Auden's work from the late 1930s, when he seeks to understand the poet's responsibility in the face of a triumphant fascism, to the late 1950s, when he discerns an irreconcilable "divorce" between poetry and history in light of industrialized murder, this startling new study reveals the intensity of the poet's struggles with the meanings of history. Through meticulous readings, significant archival findings, and critical reflection, Susannah Young-ah Gottlieb presents a new image and understanding of Auden's achievement and reveals how his version of modernism illuminates urgent contemporary issues and theoretical paradigms: from the meaning of marriage equality to the persistence of fascism; from critical theory to psychoanalysis; from precarity to postcolonial studies. "The muse does not like being forced to choose between Agit-prop and Mallarmé," Auden writes with characteristic lucidity, and this study elucidates the probity, humor, and technical skill with which his responses to historical reality in the mid-twentieth century illuminate our world today.

Auden's Games of Knowledge
Regular price $120.00 Save $-120.00The first full-length consideration of Auden as a homosexual poet, this volume shows that Auden's career was tied to a process of gay self-interrogation unparalleled in modern poetry and argues that he was driven by a powerful yearning to comprehend the psychological, political, and ethical implications of same-sex desire.
Auden's theories about poetry in the 1930s and after reflected an intense concern with how to write publicly as a homosexual poet. That struggle was made manifest in his love poetry, which Bozorth argues constitutes a kind of "erotic autobiography" exploring the distinct challenges of homosexual love.
Bozorth's approach is manifold, examining the poet's engagements with avant-garde poetics, gay subculture, psychoanalysis, leftist politics, and theology. This book proposes that from his early fascination with secret agent and trickster figures to his later theories of poetry as an I-Thou relation, Auden viewed poetry as a fictional but primal erotic encounter with the reader.

Audible Loss
Regular price $105.00 Save $-105.00An innovative and much-needed critical work on music and memorialization in relation to AIDS, 9/11, and anti-Black violence in America
Music has long served as a powerful medium for communal mourning and remembrance in times of crisis. Audible Loss examines musical responses to three major crises in US society at the turn of the twenty-first century: the AIDS epidemic, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the ongoing conditions of anti-Black violence.
Analyzing a range of works written to commemorate these losses, Andrea Zarafshon Moore explores how contemporary classical music (aka “new music”) frames and narrates these crises, gives voice to grief, imagines other possibilities, and makes loss audible. These crises are read alongside one another to reveal the ways they are mutually imbricated, while also recognizing the sheer commemorative dominance of 9/11 in this century. Attending to broader debates and discourses through which commemoration is always filtered and the ways interpretive consensus has been sought and articulated in both musical and other memorial forms, Moore probes the conventional claims of commemoration, particularly those for the necessity of remembrance to “healing” and the prevention of future crises.
Audible Loss concludes by reflecting on the limits of existing commemorative forms and the possibility, even necessity, of new ones. Taking the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study, it proposes that while memorials of all kinds may provide outlets for collective remembrance and even mourning, their power to forge a sense of collectivity is diminished as public discourse grows more fragmented. Deeply informed yet highly approachable, Audible Loss is a major contribution to the fields of music and memory studies and essential reading for anyone interested in memory culture in the United States today.

Audience Economics
Regular price $120.00 Save $-120.00Focusing on the electronic media—television, radio, and the Internet—Audience Economics bridges a substantial gap in the literature by providing an integrated framework for understanding the various businesses involved in generating and selling audiences to advertisers. Philip M. Napoli presents original research in order to answer several key questions:
How are audiences manufactured, valued, and sold?
How do advertisers and media firms predict the behavior of audiences?
How has the process of measuring audiences evolved over time?
How and why do advertisers assign different values to segments of the media audience?
How does audience economics shape media content?
Examining the relationship between the four principal actors in the audience marketplace—advertisers, media firms, consumers, and audience measurement firms—Napoli explains the ways in which they interact with and mutually depend on each other. He also analyzes recent developments, such as the introduction of local people meters by Nielsen Media Research and the establishment and evolution of audience measurement systems for the Internet. A valuable resource for academics, students, policymakers, and media professionals, Audience Economics keeps pace with the rapid changes in media and audience-measurement technologies in order to provide a thorough understanding of the unique dynamics of the audience marketplace today.

Audience Evolution
Regular price $105.00 Save $-105.00Today's consumers have unprecedented choice in terms of the technologies and platforms that access, produce, and distribute media content. The development and overlap of television, the internet, and other media technologies is fragmenting and empowering media audiences more than ever. Building on his award-winning book, Audience Economics, Philip M. Napoli maps the landscape of our current media environment and describes its challenge to traditional conceptions of the audience.
He examines the redefinition of the industry-audience relationship by technologies that have moved the audience marketplace beyond traditional metrics. Media providers, advertisers, and audience measurement firms now deploy more sophisticated tools to gather and analyze audience information, focusing on factors rarely considered before, such as appreciation, recall, engagement, and behavior. Napoli explores the interplay between political and economic interests in the audience marketplace and their effect on audience evolution. He recounts the battles waged between stakeholders over the assessment of media audiences and their efforts to restrict the functionality of new technologies. As Napoli makes clear, the very meaning of the media audience continues to evolve in response to changing technological, economic, and political conditions.

Audience Revolution: Dispatches from the Field
Regular price $22.00 Save $-22.00A collection of thoughtful and provocative reflections on how theatre practitioners think about and engage with audiences, as well as define and explore sites for performance. Through shared experience and ritual, live performance functions as a catalytic medium for progress and evolution. In the hands of artists and audience, the stage is set for the re-makings of commonwealth, or necessary revolution
"Throughout the pages of this collection, a wide range of voices sound the joy and fury of being in the trenches of the volatile discourse of enacting, staging, and sharing the experience of performance. The cultural workers in this book seek a revolution of heart, mind, and spirit. They question who we are and consistently ask that hospitality and its uses be placed at the center of the shared theatrical experience."

Audiences of Nazism
Regular price $135.00 Save $-135.00Through its focus on audiences and their reception of media in Nazi Germany, Audiences of Nazism inverts the typical top-down perspective employed in studies that concentrate on the regime’s regulation of media and propaganda. It thereby sheds new light on the complex character of the period’s media, their uses, and the scope for audience interpretation. Contributors investigate how consumers either appropriated or ignored certain messages of Nazi propaganda, and how some even participated in its production. The authors ground their studies on novel historical sources, including private diaries and letters, photographs and films, and concert programs, which demonstrate, amongst other things, how audiences interpreted and responded to regulated news, Nazi Party rallies, and the regime’s denunciation of modern works of art as ‘degenerate.’

Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen
Regular price $90.00 Save $-90.00Michel Chion’s landmark Audio-Vision has exerted significant influence on our understanding of sound-image relations since its original publication in 1994. Chion argues that sound film qualitatively produces a new form of perception. Sound in audiovisual media does not merely complement images. Instead, the two channels together engage audio-vision, a special mode of perception that transforms both seeing and hearing. We don’t see images and hear sounds separately—we audio-view a trans-sensory whole.
In this updated and expanded edition, Chion considers many additional examples from recent world cinema and formulates new questions for the contemporary media environment. He takes into account the evolving role of audio-vision in different theatrical environments, considering its significance for music videos, video art, commercial television, and the internet, as well as conventional cinema. Chion explores how multitrack digital sound enables astonishing detail, extending the space of the action and changing practices of scene construction. He demonstrates that speech is central to film and television and shows why “audio-logo-visual” is a more accurate term than “audiovisual.” Audio-Vision shows us that sound is driving the creation of a sensory cinema.
This edition includes a glossary of terms, a chronology of several hundred significant films, and the original foreword by sound designer, editor, and Oscar honoree Walter Murch.

Audio-Visual Paths to Learning
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00The use of audio-visual aids to learning is far from new in the American educational system, but it has been given a tremendous imepetus by the war and the striking success of all branches of the Armed Forces, especially the Navy, in speeding training by their use. This small book is concerned with one of the most important phases of audio-visual aids in the classroom-the utilization of the educational sound film. It reports the results of an extensive experiment in this field, in which three controlled groups in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades were tested on 27 Encyclopaedia Britannica films presented by different methods. The results of these tests showed a 50% better achievement with the use of some of the tested teaching methods described here, and a further 50% improvement with the complete use of exact teaching steps. The basis for sound instruction methods in the use of the text-film is clearly outlined here, and the book constitutes the most authoritative statement so far available of the utilization of educational sound films. It will be of special importance to teachers who use such films and in courses in audio-visual aids.

Audioliterary Poetry between Performance and Mediatization / Audioliterale Lyrik zwischen Performance und Mediatisierung
Regular price $109.99 Save $-109.99This book critically examines how the production and reception of performed poetry has changed in the wake of digitalization. The interdisciplinary chapters in this volume deal with fundamental questions confronting performed poetry in the digital age: How are concepts like liveness and performativity being adapted to mediatized digital environments? How are platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok helping to popularize performed poetry, and what online formats are emerging? How is the ubiquity of digital technologies transforming fields like experimental sound poetry, and how are they performed on stage?
Bringing together authors from various countries and disciplines, this volume addresses diverse topics such as the evolution of poetry readings in Scandinavia; poetry slams as political criticism and a social practice in Brazil, the UK, the US, and Italy; the performance of AI poetry; posthuman entanglements between gendered bodies and technological devices in experimental sound poetry; the aesthetics and practices of poetic activism on the street and social media; and how recordings of performed poetry are being circulated in our current platformized, digital environment.
Audionarratology
Regular price $186.99 Save $-186.99Audionarratology is a new 'postclassical' narratology that explores interfaces of sound, voice, music and narrative in different media and across disciplinary boundaries. Drawing on sound studies and transmedial narratology, audionarratology combines concepts from both while also offering fresh insights. Sound studies investigate sound in its various manifestations from disciplinary angles as varied as anthropology, history, sociology, acoustics, articulatory phonetics, musicology or sound psychology. Still, a specifically narrative focus is often missing. Narratology has broadened its scope to look at narratives from transdisciplinary and transmedial perspectives. However, there is a bias towards visual or audio-visual media such as comics and graphic novels, film, TV, hyperfiction and pictorial art. The aim of this book is to foreground the oral and aural sides of storytelling, asking how sound, voice and music support narrative structure or even assume narrative functions in their own right. It brings together cutting-edge research on forms of sound narration hitherto neglected in narratology: radio plays, audiobooks, audio guides, mobile phone theatre, performance poetry, concept albums, digital stories, computer games, songs.

Audiovision in the Middle Ages
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00The Monastery of Sainte-Foy (Holy Faith) at Conques in Occitania, Southern France, presents a unique case of survival: its golden effigy of Santa Fides is the earliest extant sculpture in the round in the Latin west, while the local eleventh-century architecture, music, and texts offer rich contextual evidence. Even though Sainte-Foy's statue and the narrative prose feature widely in art historical studies, the music composed at the site has fallen into a thousand-year oblivion. Bissera Pentcheva's AudioVision in the Middle Ages assembles in a highly innovative way, a wide variety of materials that help us reconstruct the visual and auditory experience of the medieval ritual at Conques. The eleventh-century Office of Sainte-Foy is here brought to life and successfully deployed as a new analytical tool to shed light on the staging and experience of the golden statue of Santa Fides and the narrative reliefs displayed in the abbey's church.
Medieval art is silent in modern times. Often displayed in sterile museum galleries, it is most often presented without any analysis of the intended envelope of sound, chant, prayer, and recitation. Stripped of this aural atmosphere, these objects have lost the power to signify and to elicit affect. This exhibition restores aspects of the original soundscape to explore the inherent connections between chant and image in medieval times. It is the first to engage medieval art from the perspective of AudioVision–the simultaneous flow of visual and auditory stimuli. The focus is on the ninth-century golden statue and reliquary of Sainte-Foy at Conques and the traditions of its eleventh-century public worship.

Auditing Practices in Local Governments
Regular price $99.99 Save $-99.99Public spending accounts for a significant share of national GDP and is perceived as a critically important way for overcoming periods of economic and social crisis, but is often criticised as inefficient and ineffective, giving raise to calls for new processes of reform. Because most public resources are raised through taxation from citizens and businesses, accountability and assurance are key in the democratic process, and auditing attempts to fulfil this public interest role. This in turn leaves public sector auditing under increasing public scrutiny and political pressure.
Through a comparative analysis of the development of auditing practices in governments across the globe, Auditing Practices in Local Governments: An International Comparison provides a contemporary overview of public sector auditing practices at both local and state level. By focusing on countries which have experienced differing implementation processes, and which are characterised by different administrative and political cultures, the authors provide a comparative analysis of countries across the globe, including major European states, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
Written by scholars and practitioners in the fields of public sector auditing, this first volume of Emerald Studies in Public Service Accounting and Accountability provides readers both researchers and practitioners with a thorough overview of international public sector auditing practice.
Auditing Reimagined
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00The auditing profession stands at a crossroads. The gap between auditors' responsibilities as defined by professional standards and stakeholder expectations has never been wider. This disconnect has fuelled scepticism, eroded public trust, and intensified debates over the role of auditors in detecting fraud, preventing corporate failures, and providing assurance on non-financial disclosures. Auditing Reimagined: Navigating Stakeholder Expectations critically examines the root causes of this growing divide. From the perception of auditors as a self-interested profession, to the expansion of non-audit consultancy services and failures in communication, the authors explore the structural and systemic factors contributing to stakeholder dissatisfaction. It also considers how technological advancements, evolving regulatory landscapes, and increasing demands for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) assurance are reshaping the profession.
Through a rigorous analysis of these challenges and opportunities, Auditing Reimagined offers a compelling vision for the future of auditing—one that is more responsive, transparent, and aligned with the expectations of an evolving business environment. Educational institutions and professional bodies will find this work most useful as they reimagine audit training, equipping future auditors not only with technical expertise but also with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate complex stakeholder demands.

Audubon
Regular price $24.99 Save $-24.99In 1803, an eighteen-year-old West Indies-born Frenchman arrived in New York City, fleeing Napoleon's conscription. His work would become inextricably entwined with the new world he so proudly adopted in his motto "America, my country."
Inspired by the primeval forests and the vast flocks of birds that thrived in them, Audubon spent the next several decades of his life painstakingly documenting the birds of the American wilderness. He traveled the back roads and bayous, searching out and studying the birds that were his pastime and passion. He spent long, silent hours observing them in the wild. He was no amateur ornithologist; rather, he drew his birds from life, and his work always carried the line "drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon."
Accompanied by his wife, Lucy, and their two sons, Audubon was able to challenge the world's expectations and win. The story of this loving family's long, profound struggle is as poignant and as relevant today as it was in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
Combining meticulous scholarship with the dramatic life story of a naturalist and pioneer, Audubon reexamines the artist's journals and letters to tell the story of Audubon's quest, the origins of the American spirit, and the sacrifice that resulted in one of the world's greatest bodies of art: The Birds of America.

Audubon's Last Wilderness Journey
Regular price $59.95 Save $-59.95John James Audubon's Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America is the largest and most significant color plate book produced in the United States in the nineteenth century, and a fitting monument to the genius of America's most famous ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. Measuring an impressive 27 3/4 x 21 1/4 inches, the Quadrupeds was published in 1845-48 as a three-volume elephant folio broadsheet edition, the artist's final great natural history work and the first single publication to document America's animals.
Audubon’s Last Wilderness Journey reproduces all one hundred and fifty original lithographic prints in color, with a timeline of Audubon's life and career. Essays by noted experts in art history, wildlife science, and ecology put this remarkable work in context, explaining its technical, artistic, and scientific importance and legacy. They consider the enduring zoological and ecological significance of the Quadrupeds folios, including their scientific value to issues such as classification, and how our relationship towards nature has changed since the 1840s.
The volume additionally includes transcripts from the journal kept by Edward Harris, cashier to the 1843 expedition, describing the everyday details of their journey and the animals they encountered, as well as a letter, written in 1851, from Audubon’s son Victor to Harris, detailing the circumstances of his father’s death.
This entire work is a remarkable record highlighting the wider importance of the North American wilderness and the significance and beauty of Audubon’s detailed illustrations.. This exceptional new volume will have serious appeal to the general public and to art historians, scientists, environmentalists, scholars, researchers, and academics alike.

- (verb) to cry, howl, groan, wail, bawl.
- (interjection) expression of astonishment or distress.
Taukiri was born into sorrow. Auē can be heard in the sound of the sea he loves and hates, and in the music he draws out of the guitar that was his father’s. It spills out of the gang violence that killed his father and sent his mother into hiding, and the shame he feels about abandoning his eight-year-old brother to a violent home.
But Taukiri’s brother, Ārama, is braver than he looks, and he has a friend, and his friend has a dog, and the three of them together might just be strong enough to turn back the tide of sadness.
This bestselling multi-award-winning novel is both raw and sublime, introducing a compelling new voice in New Zealand fiction.
