Ce livre porte une attention particulière aux politiques à l’origine de l’industrie de cartouches. Le secteur des cartouches, qui au maximum de la production employa plus de 103 300 personnes dans 180 usines, représente une part non négligeable de cette mobilisation.

Cette approche sert de vecteur pour comprendre les politiques gouvernementales régulant la participation industrielle du Canada. La participation matérielle s’est avérée à la fois un élément de changement économique et de continuité.

Le gouvernement a déployé son effort de mobilisation avec la conviction que l’unification des forces sociales et leur cohésion vers un objectif commun assureraient l’effort maximal du pays. La mobilisation économique est demeurée soumise à la défense des intérêts traditionnels, c’est-à-dire un contrôle rigoureux des finances publiques, le développement des marchés internationaux, un renforcement du secteur privé et le maintien des libertés individuelles.

Au terme du conflit, le Canada s’est positionné sur la scène internationale et a contribué à la reconstruction mondiale. Cette participation matérielle du Canada à la Seconde Guerre mondiale a transformé la société canadienne, sa politique et son économie, et a marqué un point tournant dans l’émergence d’un Canada moderne.

L’Union catholiques des fermières de la province d’Ontario, connue aujourd’hui sous le nom de l’Union culturelle des Franco-Ontariennes, est, depuis soixante ans, très active dans les milieux francophones ontariens. Dans cet ouvrage, Estelle Huneault a étudié un domaine peu exploré concernant les circonstances qui ont amené les femmes rurales franco-ontariennes des années trente à se regrouper dans une association autonome, francophone et catholique. This synchronic analysis of the longest narrative passage of the Book of Jeremiah uses a specific narratological method to try to resolve some riddles of the text, e.g., the curious narrative sequence of chap. 32, the "chaotic" chronology, and the intention of the report. It focuses on the characters and their relations, especially Jeremiah himself as mediator of God's word - but also other characters. Finally, the chapters 32-45 are determined to be an original narrative unit.

"Auch" and "noch" in Child and Adult German is an empirical study of the early acquisition of "auch" (also) and "noch" (also/still) in German, and the adult use of these additive particles in spoken language. It centres around the question of how children acquire these particles, but it also investigates the way in which adults use these particles in order to determine what children actually have to learn and what the input they get is like. Previous studies on focus particles in adult German mainly focused on the semantic and syntactic properties of primarily constructed examples. Based on several corpora of spoken German, this is the first comprehensive study of natural language data that systematically analyses the intonation of focus particle utterances as well as their semantic, syntactic and information structural properties. The study of the child data, an extensive longitudinal corpus of one German child, was carried out against the background of the adult data. It offers a thorough characterisation of the acquisition of the two additive particles that also takes into account results from previous studies on the acquisition of focus particles, mainly on their comprehension. In addition to studying the acquisition of these particles, the author also introduces an analysis of focus particles that emphasises the differences between stressed and unstressed particles, which makes this book not only interesting to researchers in language acquisition and psycholinguistics, but also to those interested in phonology/prosody, semantics, syntax and information structure.

The use of audio-visual aids to learning is far from new in the American educational system, but it has been given a tremendous imepetus by the war and the striking success of all branches of the Armed Forces, especially the Navy, in speeding training by their use. This small book is concerned with one of the most important phases of audio-visual aids in the classroom-the utilization of the educational sound film. It reports the results of an extensive experiment in this field, in which three controlled groups in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades were tested on 27 Encyclopaedia Britannica films presented by different methods. The results of these tests showed a 50% better achievement with the use of some of the tested teaching methods described here, and a further 50% improvement with the complete use of exact teaching steps. The basis for sound instruction methods in the use of the text-film is clearly outlined here, and the book constitutes the most authoritative statement so far available of the utilization of educational sound films. It will be of special importance to teachers who use such films and in courses in audio-visual aids.

Audionarratology is a new 'postclassical' narratology that explores interfaces of sound, voice, music and narrative in different media and across disciplinary boundaries. Drawing on sound studies and transmedial narratology, audionarratology combines concepts from both while also offering fresh insights. Sound studies investigate sound in its various manifestations from disciplinary angles as varied as anthropology, history, sociology, acoustics, articulatory phonetics, musicology or sound psychology. Still, a specifically narrative focus is often missing. Narratology has broadened its scope to look at narratives from transdisciplinary and transmedial perspectives. However, there is a bias towards visual or audio-visual media such as comics and graphic novels, film, TV, hyperfiction and pictorial art. The Monastery of Sainte-Foy (Holy Faith) at Conques in Occitania, Southern France, presents a unique case of survival: its golden effigy of Santa Fides is the earliest extant sculpture in the round in the Latin west, while the local eleventh-century architecture, music, and texts offer rich contextual evidence. Even though Sainte-Foy's statue and the narrative prose feature widely in art historical studies, the music composed at the site has fallen into a thousand-year oblivion. Bissera Pentcheva's AudioVision in the Middle Ages assembles in a highly innovative way, a wide variety of materials that help us reconstruct the visual and auditory experience of the medieval ritual at Conques. The eleventh-century Office of Sainte-Foy is here brought to life and successfully deployed as a new analytical tool to shed light on the staging and experience of the golden statue of Santa Fides and the narrative reliefs displayed in the abbey's church.

  Medieval art is silent in modern times. Often displayed in sterile museum galleries, it is most often presented without any analysis of the intended envelope of sound, chant, prayer, and recitation. Stripped of this aural atmosphere, these objects have lost the power to signify and to elicit affect. This exhibition restores aspects of the original soundscape to explore the inherent connections between chant and image in medieval times. It is the first to engage medieval art from the perspective of AudioVision–the simultaneous flow of visual and auditory stimuli. The focus is on the ninth-century golden statue and reliquary of Sainte-Foy at Conques and the traditions of its eleventh-century public worship.
