August Wilson's Century Cycle is one of the most ambitious dramatic projects ever undertaken (The New York Times). With it, Wilson dramatized the African American experience and heritage in the twentieth century, with a play for each decade, almost all set in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where he grew up. The aim of this study is to present, as far as possible, a general description of the theory of the sign and signification in Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD), with a view to its evaluation and implications for the study of semiotics. Accurate studies for subject, discipline, and significance have not yet given an organic and systematic vision of Augustine’s theory of the sign. The underlying aspiration is that such an endeavour will prove to be beneficial to the scholars of Augustine’s thought as well as to those with a keen interest in the history of semiotics.

The study uses Augustine’s own accounts to investigate and interpret the philosophical problem of the sign. The focus lies on the first decade of Augustine’s literary production. The De dialectica, is taken as the terminus ad quo of the study, and the De doctrina christiana is the terminus ad quem. The selected texts show an explicit engagement with poignant discussion on the nature and structure of the sign, the variety of signs and their uses. Although Augustine’s intention never was to establish a theory of meaning as an independent field of study, he largely employed a theory of signs. Thus, Augustine’s approach to signs is intrinsically meaningful.

Clement-August of Bavaria, archbishop and elector of Cologne, engaged them to build and decorate what he intended to make his summer residence. Johann Conrad Schlaun began the construction of the palace on the foundations of a medieval moated castle. In 1728, Clement-August turned the project over to François de Cuvilliés, who worked with such brilliant artists as Balthasar Neumann, Dominique Girard and Carlo Carlone.

Der Bedarf nach einer neuen kritischen Ausgabe der spätantiken, unter dem Namen des Plautus überlieferten Prosakomödie Aulularia sive Querolus besteht seit fast 50 Jahren, denn durch eine im Jahr 1976 neu gefundene Hamburger Handschrift hat sich die Überlieferungslage grundlegend geändert. Die vorliegende Neuedition hilft diesem Desiderat ab.

Der Text dieser Ausgabe basiert auf neuen Untersuchungen zur Überlieferungsgeschichte, die in einem neu entwickelten Stemma münden. Für die jetzt vorgelegte Edition wurden sämtliche Handschriften geprüft, die überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Erkenntnisse durchgehend berücksichtigt sowie die Konjekturalkritik seit der Erstausgabe konsequent einbezogen. Dadurch sowie durch mehrere hier erstmals präsentierte Konjekturen lässt sich eine Vielzahl an Verderbnissen, die dem Verständnis des Querolus bisher im Weg standen, identifizieren und oft sogar beheben. Dem Text ist neben dem kritischen Apparat ein Zitatenapparat beigegeben, der durch einen Index fontium erschlossen wird. Ein Index nominum et rerum erschließt den Text.

Die neue Teubneriana soll als Grundlage für die weitere philologische und historische Beschäftigung mit dieser einzigartigen spätantiken Komödie dienen.

This companion volume to the new Teubner edition of the late antique prose comedy Aulularia sive Querolus combines prolegomena and a text-critical and linguistic commentary. This is the first detailed modern commentary on this play.

The Prolegomena are divided into two parts. In the first part, the play is categorised in the context of its origins and its intellectual and literary-historical environment. It is shown that, contrary to doctrine, Querolus is Christian in character. In addition, the linguistic, stylistic and rhythmic peculiarities of the text are analysed. The second part comprises studies on the history of transmission, on which the new, two-column stemma on which the edition is based. The detailed commentary sheds light on linguistic and content-related peculiarities and difficulties. It also justifies the editorial decisions and the textual constitution of the Teubneriana.

Auntie Maggie and her Five Nieces and Nephews — is a tremendously original and funny picture book in which Maggie, an unconventional aunt, will have to survive a whole summer with her five nephews and nieces and their respective problems.

 An original and entertaining picture book that offers us an adventure full of humor, confidence, and courage at the beginning of childhood maturity and responsibility when children face difficulties and need help.

How Auntie Maggie cares for her nephews and nieces and is involved in solving their problems is an example of how the teaching method makes all the difference to the success of the learning process.

Funny, constructive, and always putting herself in place of her young nephews and nieces, she always has an optimal perspective that allows her to help them properly and contribute to making them better in whatever they set out to do; besides, involving them all in each of the resolutions will only enhance the virtues of all of them. 

A story perfectly accompanied by excellent artwork, in a completely new register for the artist, in which he offers us richly detailed and beautifully colored scenarios whose strokes manage to convey the funny situations the children encounter perfectly.

Auntie Maggie and her Five Nieces and Nephews bring us a story about learning by making mistakes, having the courage to ask for help when we need it instead of giving up, and the extraordinary value of that beautiful confidence that makes us feel comfortable asking for the support we need.  

A beautiful book that explores all the opportunities that children have to grow, learn, improve, and be the best they can be. But above all, to ask for help and make it as constructive as possible so that they become more competent in dealing with the setbacks that may arise.

Described by Browning as “a novel in verse,” Aurora Leigh is primarily the story of its titular heroine, an intelligent woman and ambitious poet whose talent is matched only by her skill for self-doubt. Although it is narrated in the first person, the poem also concerns itself with the character Marian Erle, a woman rescued from a life on the streets by Aurora’s cousin Romney, who loves both women in complex and varying ways. Recognized as one of the most important poems of the nineteenth century, Aurora Leigh is notable for its use of the epic form—traditionally masculine, and concerned with subjects such as war, history, and the gods—in order to tell a story centered on talented and uniquely independent women.

Born in Florence to a Tuscan mother and English father, and encouraged from a young age to study the classics and learn Latin and Greek, Aurora Leigh develops not only the desire to become a famous poet, but the talent and intelligence to achieve her dream. What she has in ambition and skill, however, she lacks in confidence, and, after moving to England as a teenager, Aurora struggles to make a name for herself in the competitive literary environment of London. While in England, she meets her cousin Romney Leigh, a dedicated and idealistic social worker who dreams of using his inheritance and family estate—Leigh Hall—to alleviate the suffering of the lower classes. Aurora Leigh is a dramatic tale of romance involving Marian Erle, Lady Waldemar—a beautiful aristocrat—and Aurora herself. Die globale Erfolgsgeschichte der Basler Architekten Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron hat ihre lokalen Wurzeln. Ihnen spürt dieses Buch nach und arbeitet so die wesentlichen Leitlinien, die Berufsethik und die Entwicklung des 1978 gegründeten Büros heraus.
Sowohl die Biografien der beiden Architekten als auch die Tätigkeit ihres Büros sind eng mit der Stadt Basel verbunden. Von dieser Basler Verankerung ausgehend, erörtern die Autoren zentrale Themen dieses Oeuvres: vom Habitat bis zum Monument. Anhand exemplarischer Bauwerke analysieren sie Motive, konstruktive Prinzipien und Raumgestaltung im architektonischen Werk von Herzog & de Meuron.
Darüber hinaus führen Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron in Rundgängen durch Basel und die Umgebung: Statements der Architekten und eigens für das Buch aufgenommene Fotografien von George Dupin stellen Orte und Gebäude vor, die eine Schlüsselrolle für die Arbeit der Architekten spielen. Wissen über Gott und Engel, über Winde und Meteore, über Grammatik und Rhetorik, Informationen darüber, wie man eine Harfe baut, die einen zum Einschlafen bringt, aber auch darüber, wie man böse Geister bändigt, finden sich in den über hundert Publikationen, die unter dem Namen Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-1586/88) in vier Sprachen bis in die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts erschienen sind. Um dieses vielfältige Wissen zu versammeln, wurde kompiliert – es wurde aus Bestehendem Neues hergestellt. Für die Praktik der Kompilation war ein Netzwerk von Menschen, aber auch von Dingen unabdingbar; ohne deren Zusammenspiel wäre eine so vielfältige und vielfache Buchproduktion nicht möglich gewesen. Um derart viele Bücher publizieren zu können, war nicht nur das Kompilieren bedeutsam, sondern auch das Übersetzen und Auskoppeln von Teilen zwecks Herstellung neuer Bücher. Das Machen von Büchern aus Büchern bildete die Grundlage des Erfolgs dieser Publikationen, die in der Forschung bislang kaum Beachtung fanden.
