Caroline Norton’s forgotten novel, which has remained unpublished until now, tells of the perils of courtship facing a naïve young girl Alixe, who has been launched onto the London social season. Her encounters with both a worthy and an undesirable suitor open an intriguing window onto the fashionable society of the 1820s in which Love in 'the World' takes place. Caroline was able to draw upon her own experiences of the bon ton and those of her elder sister, Helen. The time in which the novel was set coincides with their entrée to society in the mid-1820s. It was then that Caroline burst upon the scene with all her beauty and brilliance, later recalling “the night upon which she made her début, coming down dressed to the room where her mother and aunt were awaiting her.” She added, “I came out […] to find all London at my feet.”

She believed that London, “where the cry of the drowning suicide is lost in the hum of gathered multitudes restlessly pursuing the pleasures or the business of life,” could be as callous as the metropolitan social scene might prove treacherous, and in alerting the reader to the dangers of fashionable society she made ample use of her own observations as a debutante at her first London season. In a highly readable and coherent narrative with an indeterminate ending, which throws a spotlight onto her life and times, the plot of Love in “the World” initially follows a pattern broadly representative of Norton’s own experience, before developing in unexpected and surprising ways.

It also anticipates the dilemmas faced by Norton's young heroine Beatrice Brooke in her later novel, Lost and Saved (1863). Indeed the novel compares well with any of Norton’s finest narrative writing, such as The Wife and the autobiographical sections of her pamphlets. It is hoped that Love in ‘the World’, finally in print after almost two centuries, might achieve comparable recognition and inspire a wider reappraisal of Caroline Norton’s novels and stories. Edited by the team who recently published Caroline Norton’s correspondence, the book also includes a Preface by Diane Atkinson, a distinguished historian and biographer of Norton.

The book’s seven short chapters provide an original critical, political economist’s introduction to the meaning, causes and consequences of inflation. The book begins by arguing that inflation is a metaphor rather than a ‘thing’ and that inflation is a complex social construction, whose social complexity tends to become obscured by the presentation of inflation in terms of any simple number. It identifies inclusions and exclusions, measurement difficulties, and inherent imperfections in inflation indexes. It then provides a historical context to arguments about causes and consequences, emphasising how prices and price changes are influenced by both states and (more or less private) economic forces and that rather than involving a neutral ‘change of counters’, price changes have substantial and differentiated social impacts. It shows that the ‘norm’ of rising prices is a historical novelty and highlights that genuine hyperinflations are extremely rare.
The middle part of the book develops a constructive critique of existing theories. It begins by considering the quantity theory of money, arguing that the four variables of the famous Fisher equation – money, velocity of circulation, prices and transactions – should indeed be seen as variables and that doing so means that monetarist follies do not require their inversion, that inflation cannot be a monetary phenomenon or that states cannot be implicated. It then turns to the relation between unemployment and inflation and develops ideas which link inflation to the dynamics of capitalist innovation, competition and the changing global economy.
The final part of the book considers the consequences of inflation. It contests what it sees as an anti-inflationary consensus, presenting evidence that, up to levels far beyond those contemplated by central bankers, inflation is conducive to faster economic growth and that it also tends to reduce wealth and income inequality. In this context, it argues that the contemporary low-inflation regime should be understood as a profoundly political achievement and asks why this inherently political character of inflation has been so effectively submerged and the acceptance of the low inflation agenda so widely accepted.

This book surveys the subject of abrogation (Naskh) in the Qur’an, Hadith and Islamic literature, illustrating that the concept of abrogation was introduced after the Prophetic era in order to explain certain verses of the Qur’an and what has come to be termed as “conflicting Prophetic narrations” (Mukhtalaf al-Hadith).

It goes on to suggest that the “abrogated rulings” were merely pre-Islamic cultural practices that contradicted with Islamic principles. It considers the influences of industrial, political and social disruptions on these representations as well as their contributions to those disruptions.

What does such a book add to the extant literature on organizational justice, especially, after the publication of the landmark work of Colquitt and Greenberg (2005), Handbook of Organizational Justice? Although there are no easy answers to these questions, in the following lines, I explain the reasons why a book on culture and justice is not only needed but also timely. There are at least three reasons for which a book on culture and organizational justice is needed. First, a book on culture and organizational justice is needed because "there are indications that culture exerts very important and wide-ranging effects on justice behavior including even generally shaping the likelihood that individuals will experience feelings of injustice" (James, 1993, p. 22). Second, globalization has led to the interrelatedness of world economies.Thus, most organizations not only operate in several countries, but they also employ people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The resulting challenge is to find new ways of managing a culturally diverse workforce. Third, justice is inherent to any organized social group. As examples of social systems, organizations are arenas of justice concerns because their members compete for limited resources. The resources for which they compete include tangibles, such as money but also intangibles, such as status, power, and prestige (e.g., Tajfel & Turner, 1979; Turner, 1985). This study explores the practice of scientific enquiry as it took place in the eighteenth-century home. While histories of science have identified the genteel household as an important site for scientific experiment, they have tended to do so via biographies of important men of science. Using a wide range of historical source material, from household accounts and inventories to letters and print culture, this book investigates the tools within reach of early modern householders in their search for knowledge. It considers the under-explored question of the home as a site of knowledge production and does so by viewing scientific enquiry as one of many interrelated domestic practices. It shows that knowledge production and consumption were necessary facets of domestic life and that the eighteenth-century home generated practices that were integral to ‘Enlightenment’ enquiry.
