This textbook is aimed at intermediate and advanced-level students of Japanese language who are interested in present-day Japanese society. Its six thematic units focus on Japan's diversity; topics include women's lifestyles, young people's attitudes toward work, the changing education system, and foreigners in Japan. Reading selections in the this volume are authentic materials from published books and newspapers. In additional to the original text, a version with phonetic aids is provided for readers who need help with kanji. A supplemental exercise and vocabulary volume (Volume 2: Tasks, Vocabulary, and Sentence Patterns) and three useful audio CDs are available separately.

Atsuko Kondoh and Chika Maruyama are the directors of the Japanese language program for foreign students at the University of Tokyo.
