Herland (1915) is a utopian novel by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Herland was originally published in The Forerunner, a monthly magazine edited by Gilman, before going out of print for the next several decades. The novel was republished with an influential introduction by scholar Ann J. Lane in 1979 and has since been recognized as an important work of science fiction written by a leading feminist of the early twentieth century.

A sociologist and his two friends embark on an expedition to discover a rumored land where a lost civilization of women lives apart from the rest of the world. They journey by plane and, upon landing, are quickly captured by a group of women. Taken to town, the men are held in a central fortress where they are treated well and encouraged to learn more about the women’s culture in order to assimilate. They are taught the history of the land, which has been without men for two thousand years, and learn that the women are able to reproduce asexually. When an escape attempt goes awry, they are forced to abandon their prejudices, joining the society through marriage. When one of the group fails to respect their hosts’ ideals of gender equality, however, the men are forced to make a decision that could endanger the continued existence of the utopia.

The Reynolds Pamphlet (1797) is an essay by Alexander Hamilton. Written while Hamilton was serving as Secretary of the Treasury, the Pamphlet was intended as a defense against accusations that Hamilton had conspired with James Reynolds to misuse funds meant to cover unpaid wages to Revolutionary War veterans. Admitting to an affair with Maria, Reynolds’ wife, Hamilton claims that the accusation is nothing more than an attempt at blackmail. White Fang is an allegorical adventure story about a part wolf, part dog who is born in the violent, harsh environment of the Canadian Yukon territory. The novel begins with two men attempting to bring a corpse back to civilization as they are followed by a pack of starving wolves. The novel, in its second act, switches to the perspective of the wolves. As a pup, White Fang endures battles of survival with his mother, One-Eye, against other wolves and a lynx. When One-Eye is in the close vicinity to a Native Indian village, she is recognized as an animal who had been part of the encampment at one point. Grey Beaver, a young hunter, adopts White Fang. The other dogs and pups resent the new addition to the village, and torment White Fang, who in turn becomes contentious. He is sold to a dog fighter, and into a brutal life of violence. He is eventually rescued and brought to California, to start a very different life in the care of a loving master and his family.
