International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong 2015, "Poetry and Conflict," explores the multi-layered relationships between poetry and war. Acclaimed poets from war-troubled countries past and present engage "war" as a topic in their works, exchanging views and exploring the complex ways in which poetry has been able to play a role in the most violent events in human history. In doing so, they encourage the writers and readers of war-free Hong Kong to reflect upon the local milieu in a global framework.

This box set extends the single-volume anthology with twenty-one pocket-sized paperbacks encased in a fine paper box. Chapbooks can be purchased individually, with poems accompanied by English and/or Chinese translations.

Hong Kong has remained a wealthy financial hub but its income inequality is greater than that in any developed economy. The growing unequal income distribution and poverty in Hong Kong have aroused public concern. This book brings together some of Hong Kong’s and the U.K.’s leading experts to examine poverty in Hong Kong from three perspectives: (1) public understanding of poverty, and the extent of poverty and social exclusion in Hong Kong society, (2) poverty and health as well as child poverty and educational opportunities in Hong Kong, and (3) effectiveness of poverty alleviation measures in Hong Kong. On this basis, this book advances the theory and practice of poverty and social exclusion measurement, and will inspire comparative research and policy analyses for better policy initiatives.

This collection was inspired by the Poverty and Social Exclusion in Hong Kong project funded by the Research Grants Council and the UK Economic and Social Research Council.

This book focuses on Lam Woo, a highly successful Chinese building contractor whose company was based in Hong Kong at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is also about the marginal group of people he exemplifies, those who joined the Chinese diaspora because of poverty and political turmoil and were later driven back home because of discrimination and other difficulties. This book provides a window onto the socio-political conditions in Hong Kong leading up to the 1911 revolution that established the Republic of China and the following two decades. In studying Lam Woo's life and family, we catch a glimpse of the lives of a unique segment of the Hong Kong Chinese community—namely, the educated, westernized Chinese, mainly Christians, some of whom supported the revolution to overthrow the Qing dynasty.

Chan draws on rich archival sources and historical photographs to illustrate the life of a man who was a pioneer builder of majestic heritage buildings throughout Hong Kong such as St. Paul's Church, St. Paul's Coeducational College, the Diocesan Boys' School, and St. Stephen's College, all of which remain in use today. Lam Woo's efforts in rebuilding the port facilities and docks helped the colony's transformation into a glamorous international port. The book also discusses how Lam Woo's contributions to the building of roads and bridges linked different parts of the territory with mainland China. In the later part of the book, the author highlights how Lam Woo, a devout Anglican, contributed to the expansion of the Chinese Anglican Church community. As one of the founders of St. Paul's Church, he promoted the establishment of the Hong Kong YMCA, with its emphasis on character training in "the development of body, mind, and spirit" for young people. The book emphasizes that his most lasting legacy for Hong Kong and his native Guangzhou was through his philanthropic activities in education. Lam Woo supported education for girls and founded St. Paul's Girls' School, the forerunner of the notable St. Paul's Co-educational College, founded a primary and a secondary school in his native village, and donated extensively to Lingnan University.

The city of Hangzhou symbolized all of the contradictions of the declining Song Empire (960–1279). It was paramount and feeble, awe-inspiring and threatened, the most admired city and a disgrace to its dynastic founders. Rather than debate the merit of these polemical judgments, the contributors to this volume treat them as expressions of their historical moment, reflecting ideological convictions and aesthetic preferences.

Leading scholars of the field, including Beverly Bossler, Stephen West, and Martin Powers, have produced essays that relate changes in literary convention to shifts in territorial boundaries, and analyze writing, painting, dance, and music as means by which individual literati placed themselves in time and space. The contributors re-establish the historical connections between writing and meaningful action, between text and world, between the sources and their own words, and between the page and the senses. Their efforts to retrieve the sounds, sights, and smells of Hangzhou from Southern Song texts replicate, in reverse direction, the attempts of twelfth- and thirteenth-century authors to devise effective tropes and suitable genres that would preserve their living impressions of the city in writing.

This work offers the most comprehensive account of the origin and consequences of the Yan’an Rectification Movement from 1942 to 1945. The author argues that this campaign emancipated the Chinese Communist Party from Soviet-influenced dogmatism and unified the Party, preparing it for the final victory against the Nationalist Party in 1949. More importantly, this monograph shows in great detail how Mao Zedong established his leadership through this party-wide political movement by means of aggressive intraparty purges, thought control, coercive cadre examinations, and total reorganizations of the Party’s upper structure. The result of this movement not only set up the foundation for Mao’s new China, but also deeply influenced the Chinese political structure today.

The Chinese version of How the Red Sun Rose was published in 2000, and has had twenty-two printings since then.

This book gives an account of Hong Kong’s medical and health development from the Second World War to the present day, investigates how medical and health services grew and adapted as Hong Kong’s political and the socioeconomic landscape—and the world beyond it—changed, and continued changing. Many Shang dynasty inscribed oracle bones were found at Yinxu, Henan province. Their purpose and function shed significant light on the origin of Chinese culture, disclosing major concerns of the time. Shang oracle-bone script is the earliest known form of systematic Chinese writing, which is a crucial source for understanding the development of Chinese characters as well as the history of the Shang dynasty.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is the largest repository of oracle bones in Hong Kong, including forty-four oracle bones donated by Deng Erya's family to United College and twenty-seven by Lee Yim to the Art Museum. The specialist catalog is intended for both the expert and the uninitiated yet educated reader. The essays reveal the close relationship between and achievement of oracle-bones studies and art of the University.

1975–1984: the decade leading up to the signing of the Sino-British Joint Declaration witnessed the rise of China from an isolated country to a serious economic player on the world stage and the decline of the British empire. Torn between the two was Hong Kong, a stable and prosperous British colony with an almost wholly Chinese population, a city world-renowned for money-making with little interest in politics.

What would be Hong Kong’s fate after 1997? At times astute and uncannily prescient, at other times wildly imaginative, Lam Hang-chi’s daily editorials in the Hong Kong Economic Journal analyzed and conjectured Hong Kong’s options at the time. China’s ascent to the rank of the world’s second largest economic power has given its revolution a better image than that of its Russian counterpart. Yet the two have a great deal in common. Indeed, the Chinese revolution was a carbon copy of its predecessor, until Mao became aware, not so much of the failures of the Russian model, but of its inability to adapt to an overcrowded third-world country. Yet instead of correcting that model, Mao decided to go further and faster in the same direction. The aftershock of an earthquake may be weaker, but the Great Leap Forward of 1958 in China was far more destructive than the Great Turn of 1929 in the Soviet Union. It was conceived with an idealistic end but failed to take all the possibilities into account. China’s development only took off after—and thanks to—Mao’s death, once the country turned its back on the revolution.

Lucien Bianco’s original comparative study highlights the similarities: the all-powerful bureaucracy; the over-exploitation of the peasantry, which triggered two of the worst famines of the twentieth century; control over writers and artists; repression and labor camps. The comparison of Stalin and Mao that completes the picture, leads the author straight back to Lenin and he quotes the observation by a Chinese historian that, “If at all possible, it is best to avoid revolutions altogether.”

China stands as a major "Red Swan" challenge to the social sciences. The political resilience of the Communist party-state, in combination with a rapidly expanding and internationally competitive economy, represents a significant deviant and unpredicted case with a huge potential impact not only on the global distribution of political and economic power but also on the global debate about models of development. China's exceptional development trajectory thus challenges conventional wisdom as well as conventional models of political change. The traditional approach to systemic classification is not helpful in understanding the dynamics in China, a system which is unexpectedly adaptable and versatile in many policy fields, particularly as regards economic and technology policy.

To avoid the inherent limitations of typological approaches, this book uses analytical approaches drawn from policy studies. The focus is on the manner in which action programs in China's governmental system can be developed, formulated, implemented, adjusted, and revised. Policy making is therefore seen in this book as an open-ended process with an uncertain outcome, driven by conflicting interests, recurrent interactions, and continuous feedback—it is not seen as being determined by history, regime type, or institutions in a straight-forward way. Key to this are the political and administrative methodology as well as the capacity to deal with both existing and emerging challenges, the correction mechanisms when things go wrong and conflicts arise, and adaptive capabilities in a constantly changing economic or international context.

Any consideration of China's cultural modernity must begin with a rethinking of traditional Chinese civilization in its orientation and the problems that it has to face in the modern age. This book examines how Confucian traditions have shaped modernity in East Asia. A leading sociologist, Ambrose Y. C. King discusses how China and East Asia developed a model of modern civilization distinct from the Western model of modernization which involves not only a process of deconstructing the cultural tradition but also a process of reconstructing it.

He shows how the experience of modernization diverges within different Chinese societies, namely Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan. By highlighting the impact of Confucianism on the direction of modernity in Chinese societies, he argues that Confucianism contains the seeds of modernization and transformation and that in the right institutional settings these seeds could bear fruit to influence positively the course of development.
