What does it mean to direct in the wake of #MeToo? Johannes Maria Schmit explores the crisis of Regie (i.e. the agency of directing) in a territory shaped by the social turn. His artistic research focuses on the rehearsal space and its boundaries – a space in which the crisis of Regie reverberates through the volatile improvisations between actor and director. While seeking more ethical alternatives to the unilateral power of a director constructed as a »genius«, the volume simultaneously challenges the emancipatory claims of current forms of non-hierarchical, participatory rehearsal practice. It aims to identify and reimagine sustainable forms of directorial work without losing the polemic challenge associated with the presence and power of Regie.
