The scholars writing for this volume have all worked with Jeffrey Hamburger and so have been inspired by studies that rise from interdisciplinary collaboration, manuscript studies, and new modes of historical contextualization. The broad horizons associated with these approaches through collaboration have been characteristic of Hamburger's distinguished career. And it is fitting that this ground-breaking, interdisciplinary collection of essays explores the multiple methodologies used by scholars today for treating art, texts, music and the liturgy within individual case studies, especially as they rise out of efforts by particular communities, that is, out of collaboration. A large number of the essays focuses on books produced by and/or for female religious communities; one group of studies concentrates upon various houses of Poor Clares and their production of art and music. The book is chronologically and geographically wide ranging and introduces several previously unstudied manuscripts, offering new knowledge not only about medieval art, texts, music, and liturgy in context, but also demonstrating a variety of ways to approach these subjects, some of which are newly conceived.
