Large and small cities, as well as urban landscapes, are faced with the challenge of developing the built environment in harmony with natural processes. The Europan 18 competition calls on young architects and planners in Europe to try out new design strategies and develop projects that make clever use of existing resources instead of relying on demolition and new construction.
At the two German locations of Regensburg and Speichersdorf, as well as the Austrian location of Bregenz-Hard-Fussach-Höchst, projects were developed along the thematic lines of "Natural elements as design partners," "New ways of living, different spaces," and "Building with what is already there," which highlight the existing building stock as a starting point for inclusive municipal transformation processes.
This catalog summarizes the competition entries from the German locations, the Austrian location, and the German and Austrian winners at European locations.

Große und kleine Städte, aber auch urbane Landschaften sind damit konfrontiert, die gebaute Umwelt im Einklang mit natürlichen Prozessen zu entwickeln. Der Europan-18-Wettbewerb fordert junge Architekt*innen und Planer*innen in Europa dazu auf, neue Entwurfsstrategien zu erproben und Projekte zu entwerfen, die bestehende Ressourcen klug nutzen, anstatt auf Abriss und Neubau zu setzen.
An den zwei deutschen Standorten Regensburg und Speichersdorf sowie dem österreichischen Standort Bregenz-Hard-Fussach-Höchst wurden entlang der Themenschwerpunkte „Natürliche Elemente als Gestaltungspartner", „Neue Lebensweisen, andere Räume", und „Bauen mit dem, was schon da ist" Projekte entwickelt, die den Bestand als Ausgangspunkt für inklusive kommunale Transformationsprozesse aufzeigen.
Der vorliegende Katalog fasst die Wettbewerbsbeiträge der deutschen Standorte, des österreichischen Standorts sowie der deutschen und österreichischen Gewinner an europäischen Standorten zusammen.

Der Verein EUROPAN - Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Förderung von Architektur, Wohnungs- und Städtebau e.V. wurde 1988 gegründet. Er setzt sich für den Ideenaustausch im Bereich des innovativen Wohnungs- und Städtebaus zwischen den verschiedenen Ländern Europas ein, dazu veranstaltet EUROPAN Architektur- und Planungswettbewerbe die europaweit durchgeführt werden.

The EUROPAN association – German Society for the Promotion of Architecture, Housing, and Urban Development – was founded in 1988. It promotes the exchange of ideas in the field of innovative housing and urban development between different European countries, organizing EUROPAN architecture and planning competitions that are held throughout Europe.
