Cook from scratch, enjoy each season’s bounty, and rediscover the practical pleasures of a self-reliant kitchen.

Inspired by years of raising a family on a farm, Mrs. Restino’s Country Kitchen celebrates a resourceful way of cooking: use what you have, make the most of what’s in season, and learn the skills that help you depend a little less on anything that comes in a package.

Part cookbook and part guide to country living, this collection of more than 300 recipes ranges from everyday favorites to dishes inspired by cuisines around the world. Make homemade soups and stocks, seasonal vegetable dishes, hearty bean and grain recipes, fresh pasta, seafood, chicken and meat dishes, breads, cakes, cookies, pies, and more. Rather than simply telling you what to do, Susan Restino explains the fundamentals behind good cooking, helping you understand what works, make substitutions, and improvise with confidence.

Learn to bake bread from scratch, make yogurt and cheese, brew beer and fruit wines, dry herbs and produce, can and freeze the harvest, store food for winter, and even cook on a wood-burning stove. Whether your food comes from your own garden or the local market, Susan’s practical advice, warm stories of farm life, and charming hand-drawn illustrations make this new edition of Mrs. Restino’s Country Kitchen as enjoyable to browse as it is useful to keep close at hand.

Inside you’ll find:

  • Recipes for vegetables, soups, grains, seafood, meats, breads, desserts, and more
  • Seasonal cooking and garden-to-kitchen guidance
  • Instructions for making bread, yogurt, butter, and homemade cheeses
  • Food-preservation techniques, including drying, canning, freezing, and root-cellar storage
  • Home brewing, woodstove cooking, and other skills for a more self-reliant kitchen

Susan Restino is a writer, illustrator, farmer, and longtime home cook. Her approach to food grew from decades of practical experience on her family’s farm in the Cape Breton highlands of Nova Scotia. After learning French cooking techniques while working as an au pair in Europe, she developed a wide-ranging style influenced by international cuisines—as well as seasonal ingredients grown, gathered, and preserved close to home. Susan has written magazine articles about farming and self-reliant living, and her hands-on experience includes gardening, breadmaking, cheesemaking, food preservation, foraging, and cooking on a woodstove.
