Tokyo’s seemingly endless sea of buildings has grown incrementally over the past centuries, leading to an urban condition that is both coherent and contradictory at the same time. The understanding of Tokyo as a continuous and interdependent urban complex is a much-neglected perspective in previous readings of the city.
An attachment to the land, strong civic commitment, and a deep appreciation of the immaterial has produced a nested megastructure of smaller communities. These places have all evolved in a related way, briefly and temporarily disrupted by earthquakes and a devastating war. Over time, a set of distinct urban patterns emerged through centralization processes, the “manshon urbanization,” the relocation of various types of manufacturing, and other developments.
What might appear homogeneous in composition and rhythm is in fact a configuration of distinctly different spaces, created by the routines of everyday life that make the district of Shinjuku different from Shimokitazawa or Kitamoto.

This book not only provides the first comprehensive reading of the many urbanization processes shaping Tokyo today, but also seeks an entirely new approach for looking at megacity regions: through their differences, and the way those differences are are produced in the course of everyday life.

The Topography of Terror, a place of learning and remembrance, evolved in central Berlin on the ruined site where the headquarters of Gestapo, SS, and Reich Security Main Office once stood in the Nazi era. It now has over a million visitors every year. In this volume, the historian Andreas Nachama, who was director of the Topography of Terror Foundation from 1994 to 2019, recalls his youthful impressions of the place and traces the evolution and establishment of the Topography of Terror, with which he was closely associated from the 1980s onwards. The architect and exhibition designer Ursula Wilms and the landscape architect Heinz W. Hallmann present the basic concept that guided their overall design plan for the Topography of Terror, combining architecture, landscape, and exhibition design. The original photographs in the volume by the photographer Friederike von Rauch convey the atmosphere of the site shortly before its completion in 2010.

Recognizing the dire threats of climate collapse and mass extinction, the global initiative Bauhaus Earth convened a team of scientists, architects, spatial planners, and policymakers from around the world to author a manifesto. Toward Re-Entanglement: A Charter for the City and the Earth is a call for radical transformation. It challenges all those with a role in the conception, production, operation, and governance of the building sector to address the systemic ecological, climatic, and social impacts incurred by its activities.

Twelve principles of "re-entanglement" guide the redesign of the entire life cycle of the urban realm: the reforming and rematerializing of the physical artifacts that comprise it, the reconfiguring of the socioeconomic structures that underpin it, and the reengaging of the bioregions that might sustainably supply it. In 1908, the Exhibition Hall at the Mathildenhöhe Artists’ Colony in Darmstadt—designed by the Jugendstil architect Joseph Maria Olbrich—was inaugurated. A century later, schneider+schumacher was entrusted with its general renovation. To begin with, the office had to grapple with the building’s historic architectural substance, its complex climatic and exhibition technology, as well as the spatial and design challenges inherent to the iconic structure. Also playing an important role was the building’s status as a protected landmark and the decision—announced in the course of the renovations—by a UNESCO commission to declare the Artists’ Colony a World Heritage Site.

This richly illustrated volume tells the story of this building while showing readers how the architects have allowed it to speak again for itself, at the same time introducing new voices with the addition of contemporary elements.

Through his buildings and city planning work, Friedrich Pützer (born 1871) shaped Darmstadt’s cityscape far more significantly than is generally known. His buildings are evidence of the Grand Duchy of Hessen’s period of flourishing and reformation around 1900—particularly in its capital, Darmstadt. Pützer’s works are comprehensively represented in this volume. They include the modern and highly functional central station, which connected the city to the constantly growing rail network, and various parts of the chemical company Merck’s headquarters. Competing with the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony, he planned residences in Mathildenhöhe that proposed independent concepts for a new way of living, and designed innovative institutional buildings and lecture theatres for the city’s technical university. Pützer also conceived and realised the Paulusviertel neighbourhood, with its Pauluskirche church ensemble. This work is recognised as one of the major examples of the painterly style in city planning.

In 2020, Darmstadt’s twelfth city photographer Vitus Saloshanka set out to document Pützer’s impact. His photographs illustrate the sophisticated creativity, environmental sensitivity, and technical accomplishment of the Aachen-born architect’s buildings.

Home to more city dwellers than any other continent, and the locus of many of the world’s most populous metropolitan areas, Asia is moving to center stage in popular and academic debates about global urban futures. This volume comprises essays examining the intersections of the urban and futurity. While attentive to emergent forms of urban Asia, contributors also examine futures past, the afterlives of historical projects and archaeologies of the future. After North America, the second-most urbanized region in the world is Latin America and the Caribbean, 78% of whose population lives in cities. The result of five years of recent research by Vienna’s Urban Design Lab, this handbook contextualizes emergent planning issues at hand in the region, where cities are continuing to grow at considerably high rates. Case studies conducted between 2013 and 2018 in over 20 cities, accompanied by 250 color illustrations, offer a detailed survey of the issues facing Latin American and Caribbean urban planning in the 2010s.

Topics covered include social participation in the planning process, the role of culture in urban transformation, “human-scale” city development, and creative reinterpretation of existing municipal structures. But what picture does the city have to offer beyond the pulsing pleasure boulevard The Strip? Urbanizing the Mojave Desert: Las Vegas shows us the unknown, desolate side of Las Vegas and its environs. There, where the suburbs in the desert encroach on nature and change it, the book reveals the surprising connenctions between the abstract architectonic sculptures which mark the image of Las Vegas, and the spacious abstractions of nature in the Mojave Desert.

In Learning from Las Vegas Robert Venturi and Denise Scott-Brown focused on the glamour of the Las Vegas Strip, analyzing the city for its postmodernist qualities while ignoring the Mojave desert immediately beyond. Exploring the city at the same time as Venturi and Scott-Brown, the renowned architectural historian and critic Reyner Banham focused his attention on what he saw as the strikingly modernist spaces of the Mojave desert and disregarded the postmodernist lure of the Strip. Urbanizing the Mojave Desert: Las Vegas presents neither a modernist nor a postmodernist view of the city and its environment. The text and images do not project ideals of urban development, nor do they solve social and environmental problems. Rather, they present a hybrid landscape shaped and reshaped by practices of everyday urbanization for a city now characterized as the “first” city of the 21st century. They offer a “third site”, exposing the complex but often interstitial spaces of everyday production and consumption tied to physical and virtual place making as well as contemporary local and global investment. This perspective reframes the seamless surfaces of draped neon lights, curtain walls, and landscape features layered onto the Mojaveʼs stark topography, uncovering distinct strata that respatialize the social, cultural, and environmental implications of urbanizing a fierce yet fragile desert.

What is “good” architecture? This seemingly simple question is connected to a wide range of criteria—just like the radical quest for “good” food, which has produced a wealth of insights over the past few decades.

This book showcases buildings whose construction has been based on simple technology, good craftsmanship and careful choice of local and natural materials, as well as local development initiatives that demonstrate excellence in building quality, landscape restoration and community revitalization.

Vertauschte Köpfe is being published in conjunction with the first joint exhibition by the brothers Andreas and Konrad Mühe at KUNSTWERK Sammlung Klein. How can these siblings—who could hardly be less alike—collaborate on an equal footing, harmonizing their respective artworks? Uniting them is an intensive preoccupation with their family’s history. And their differences are mutually complementary: while the first is concerned with the way in which the family history is interwoven with German history, the second addresses the relationship between human and technological bodies, as well as their political subtexts in the contemporary world. Not unlike a family whose members tell divergent stories about one another, the catalog takes up various temporal levels and narrative strands. Vertauschte Köpfe hence encompasses multiple books that refer to and challenge one another: the works of Andreas and Konrad Mühe engage in an interplay with texts by Valeria Waibel, Karsten Ehlers, Monika Maron, Kito Nedo, and a comic strip by Gregor Hinz. Hovering in the air is the question: How solid is the substrate of their shared foundation?

Visions4people offers an overview of artistic research in the context of psychiatric residential environments and conveys their particular challenges. What form can design visions and interventions take where people are central? Tyyne Claudia Pollmann has addressed this question and studied it as part of a collaboration between Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin and the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Charité Mitte, together with students, patients and staff on the psychiatric ward.

Dieses Buch erzählt von der historischen Entwicklung des für Kreuzberg so bedeutenden Oranienplatzes und rekonstruiert die bewegte Geschichte des Gebäudes von seinem Ursprung als Geschäftshaus bis hin zum mustergültigen Hotelumbau durch das Büro Hilmer & Sattler und Albrecht Architekten. Darüber hinaus ordnet es seine signifikante Architektur in das vielschichtige Werk von Cremer & Wolffenstein ein. Eine Fülle von historischen wie aktuellen Abbildungen lassen die Schilderungen lebendig werden.

„Forschen, lehren, lernen – am Land fürs Land": Nach diesem Motto schuf die TU Wien 2022 mit der „landuni" einen Ankerpunkt im niederösterreichischen Drosendorf, um gemeinsam mit Bewohner*innen über eine lebendige, nachhaltige Zukunft für ländliche Regionen nachzudenken. Dealing imaginatively with the extreme water dynamics of the Elbe Islands in Hamburg is one of the key themes of the International Building Exhibition Hamburg within the context of its main heading “Cities and Climate Change”. The WASSERATLAS offers a new perspective on complex water-related issues in connection with the Elbe Islands. In a combination of maps, photos, diagrams and texts, it vividly depicts the interplay of human influences, topography, and water with all its facets: the Elbe, harbour water, canals, groundwater, sewage, and floodwater. Against the background of the original, fascinating concept of water-land and vital questions concerning the future, creative and remodelling approaches to the water-land dynamics of the Elbe Islands are applied, modified and developed in 3 x 3 scenarios. This makes the WASSERATLAS an innovative, interdisciplinary tool for the design of urban waterscapes.

How would we like to live today? With the WerkBundStadt, the Berliner Werkbund provides a far-reaching answer and makes a concrete proposal. Taking the current political, economic, ecological, technical, and social circumstances into account, it developed an urban development model on the Charlottenburger Mierendorffinsel, applying a cooperative process. Based on jointly formulated rules, 33 international architecture firms designed three houses for three building sites, of which each is intended to create the conditions for a socially, demographically, culturally, and functionally diverse structure for the WerkBundStadt, in terms of architecture and urban space, providing flexible structures and layouts that enable fundamental changes later on without substantial interventions. Together and without an external jury, one house was chosen respectively that fulfilled all the aforementioned criteria, whilst each firm continued to participate in the ensuing process.
This book presents the location for the new WerkBundStadt, comments on the results of the procedure, and presents in detail the designs by the 33 architecture firms, with plans and images.

The publication of the book coincides with the opening of the exhibition by the same name WerkBundStadt Am Spreebord (at the WerkBundHaus, Quedlinburger Strasse 11, 10589 Berlin from September 24 to November 30, 2016)

The architectural design process often starts with a practical interpretation of a theme; the object becomes the associative raw material for the architectural design. Werkstücke considers this stage of the process, compiling sketches of the objects that will eventually become homes.

How architects are designing for communal living in a country enduring the diminishment of private space: Japan

This book explores the concept of “co-dividuality,” an architecture that expresses a new response to joint living in the age of post-individualism, social media and the sharing economy. The focus lies on current and contemporary experimentation in Japanese architecture presenting thematic homes with shared spaces designed as a result of warm, simple, fun and contemporary design reflections. In addition to their private room, the co-tenants have large common areas where they can practice urban farming, create a start-up, cook together or experience new spatial ergonomics. The book offers an overview not only on domestic space but also on projects characterized by a multifarious mix between public and private spheres. What Is Co-Dividuality? reflects on how we might want to live tomorrow.

The demand for new homes is currently a focus of societal and political discussion. A considerable construction boom is being driven by an ever-increasing need for urban housing. Amid all this building activity, however, the question of what future living spaces should look like has yet to be answered. This has resulted in the erection of ubiquitous, uninspiring residential buildings—most of them generic structures lacking in vision and conceptual approach. This manual documents and analyzes the conceptually strong residential building projects designed over the past 14 years by students at Professor Carsten Lorenzen’s Chair of Residential Building and Design. The book comprehensively showcases a full range of residential building types—from neighborhoods to tower blocks to small-scale home-building projects. The conceptual approach encouraged by the university context leads to surprising architectural solutions, enriching the discourse on this topic. In addition to this, this text introduces the Chair’s teaching methods using the example building materials brick and concrete. The manual presents a collection of different residential building typologies, concepts, and presentation methods that will serve as a source of inspiration for students, teachers, and builders.

WohnWissen: 100 Begriffe des Wohnens is dedicated to one of the most multi-layered conversations of our time: the question of land and housing. Short, incisive texts by numerous experts explain key concepts related to the concept of housing. From basic terms such as single-family home, vacancy, and loneliness to specialist terminology such as the brownfield dilemma and new concepts of “non-profit housing”, this interdisciplinary glossary addresses discourses within the field, political debates, and different housing needs, considering topics that have thus far received little attention in the process. In this way, WohnWissen offers a multi-faceted overview of the topic of housing as a basic need.

In the 1930s, Walter Christaller used new media to work out his central place theory by counting telephone lines to identify centralities that connected multiple spaces: Today, digitization has a formative effect on space—on cities, the countryside, and mobility. Or when it is lacking, disruptions are the result. The contributions to the book offer an introductory examination of the effects of digitization on space and deal with the topicality of Christaller’s central place theory. The book does so both theoretically and practically, by examining spatial policies of current regional development programs, different conceptions of public services, and the tasks medium-sized centers in urban and rural areas. The second part of the book discusses which structural changes are to be expected in the course of digitization, especially through new mobility, and how this might affect the attractiveness of rural areas and the tasks of medium-sized towns. Finally, it examines the causes of populist tendencies and experiences of loss produced by processes of globalization and social division, as well as right-wing extremist developments in rural areas.

This book documents the transformation of Zollverein, a disused coal mine in Essen, Germany, into a UNESCO World Heritage Site designed on the basis of a plan by Rem Koolhaas. The text and images show how design and monument preservation have turned the structure into a thriving cultural attraction.

Zukunft Wohnen – Migration als Impuls für die kooperative Stadt ist die Fortsetzung des erfolgreichen Buches Refugees Welcome – Konzepte für eine menschenwürdige Architektur.

Ton Matton – Stadtplaner, Indie-Urbanist, energetischer Vortragender, bekennender Fan des Bautyps EW58, Zweifelnder. Noch als Student, Ende der 1980er Jahre, hielt Matton an der TU Delft Vorträge, in denen er sich mit nachhaltiger Stadtplanung befasste (damals für Stadtplaner ein noch ganz neues Arbeitsfeld). Seitdem sprach er weltweit an verschiedensten Orten, als Gastprofessor, auf Fachsymposien, in Kirchen und besetzten Häusern, auf Dorfversammlungen, bei Treffen mit Politikern, Millionären und Obdachlosen.

Matton hat sich das Handwerk des Vortragens Stück für Stück angeeignet und auf seine individuelle Weise weiterentwickelt. Lebhaft und mit viel Witz organisiert und strukturiert der gebürtige Holländer seine Gedanken der vergangenen Jahre neu, holt die Lesenden ab und fordert sie dazu auf, sich einzumischen. Er kokettiert und provoziert, macht sich selbst angreifbar und wählt den Humor als ständige Grundlage für gegenseitigen Respekt. Gibt es dazu Fragen?

Ton Matton – Stadtplaner, Indie-Urbanist, bekennender Fan des performativen Urbanimus, Zweifelnder, Briefeschreiber. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere als Stadtplaner schrieb Matton Briefe, in denen er sich mit nachhaltiger Stadtplanung befasste (damals für Stadtplaner*innen ein noch ganz neues Arbeitsfeld): an einen Minister, um ihm klarzumachen, dass eine Siedlung nur ein Kompromiss ist und kein Ersatz für ein Leben in der Stadt oder auf dem Land. An eine Bundeskanzlerin, um sie daran zu erinnern, dass man aus Wind- und Sonnenenergie gewonnenen Strom in elektrischen Zahnbürsten und Handyakkus speichern sollte. Seitdem sind viele weitere Briefe entstanden – an Politiker*innen, Projektentwickler*innen und andere mehr oder weniger prominente Personen. Was in ihnen zum Ausdruck kommt, ist Mattons leidenschaftlicher Spaß am Zweifeln. Mit viel Humor und gewohnt provokativ fordert er seine Adressat*innen zum Umdenken auf und lädt damit erneut auch die Leser*innen dazu ein, Eigeninitiative zu ergreifen.

Es gilt – auch im Sinne einer nachhaltigen Stadtentwicklung –, sich intensiver mit dieser architektonischen Ressource auseinanderzusetzen: Wie können gebäudegerechte, innovative Nutzungskonzepte erarbeitet werden? Anhand bereits erfolgter oder geplanter Umnutzungen stellt diese aus einem Forschungsprojekt der Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben und der Technischen Universität Dortmund entstandene Publikation mögliche Mittel und Methoden vor und gibt damit Architekten, Bauherren und Investoren einen umfangreichen Werkzeugkasten für den baukonstruktiven Umgang mit Hochbunkern an die Hand.

Das Buch ist ein wertvolles Stück Zeitgeschichte und ein ideales Weihnachtsgeschenk für all jene, die schon alles haben, aber offen für neue Einsichten sind. Aber auch für jene, die wenig Zeit haben und mit dieser Form der Aufbereitung viele Informationen in kurzer Zeit „verschlingen“ können.

Das Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv wurde 1936 nach Entwürfen des Architekten Dov Karmi für das aus Europa geflohene Ehepaar Tony und Max Liebling gebaut. Mit seinen hellen Putzfassaden, tiefen Loggien, klaren Proportionen und einem nach dem Stadtklima ausgerichteten Grundriss ist es ein Paradebeispiel für den lokal angepassten Internationalen Stil, wie er für die Weiße Stadt Tel Aviv typisch ist. Von 2015 bis 2019 wurde es von israelischen und deutschen Planer*innen, Sanierungs-Expert*innen und Handwerker*innen aufwendig restauriert und als lebendiges Ausstellungs- und Nachbarschaftszentrum wiedereröffnet. Das Liebling Haus wird getragen und finanziert von der deutschen Bundesregierung, der Stadt Tel Aviv und der Tel Aviv Jaffa-Stiftung.

Das in drei Sprachausgaben erscheinende Buch erzählt die wechselvolle Geschichte des Hauses und versammelt ausführliche historische Materialien zu dessen Architektur und seinen Bewohner*innen. Aktuelle Interviews, ein atmosphärischer Rundgang der israelischen Fotografin Yael Schmidt sowie weitere Dokumente zeigen die neue Nutzung des Liebling Haus seit der Wiedereröffnung.
