Advances in assessing nutrient availability in soils

Plants depend on sufficient and timely soil availability of 14 essential nutrients. In order to achieve sustainable and resource-efficient plant production with high yields and minimal environmental impact, soil analyses aimed at assessing nutrient availability should be considered an important and integral part of plant production. Although some methods are promising, there is still an urgent need to evaluate the usefulness of methods for a number of nutrients while developing and validating alternative and novel approaches. One of the most promising methods is diffusive gradients in thin films, which is used to predict the plant availability of e.g. phosphorus, copper and zinc. Multi-nutrient extractants such as Mehlich 3 or calcium chloride are also frequently used and provide general indications of fertilization requirements. For molybdenum and manganese no reliable methods exist. In this chapter, we aim to provide an overview of current methods and recent advances for assessing plant nutrient availability in soils.

This chapter reviews advances in breeding techniques for durable resistance to spot blotch in cereals. It starts by highlighting the spread, economic importance and the disease cycle of spot blotch. The chapter then goes on to examine the diversity of the pathogen and physiological specialization. This is then followed by a discussion on the identification of resistance sources, as well as the histological, biochemical and morphological components of resistance. The chapter also reviews molecular approaches for resistance breeding, specifically focusing on quantitative trait loci (QTL and genome-wide association mapping (GWAS) studies. Resistance genes and their possible deployment are also discussed, along with a section on low molecular weight toxins and their possible role in pathogenicity. The chapter also examines necrotrophic effector triggered susceptibility and associated genes and breeding for spot blotch resistance in wheat. Advances in breeding techniques for durable Septoria tritici blotch (STB) resistance in cereals

Septoria tritici blotch (STB), caused by the hemibiotrophic fungus Zymoseptoria tritici, is one of the most important foliar diseases of winter cereal crops. Recent advances are helping to understand the genetic basis and architecture of resistance to STB. To date, at least 22 genes for qualitative resistance and over 200 quantitative trait loci (QTL) for quantitative resistance have been identified in cereals. This knowledge is enabling cereal breeding programs to develop varieties with more durable resistance to STB. This chapter reviews recent research on genetic resistance loci and breeding strategies based on both conventional and biotechnology-based breeding approaches (molecular marker/genomic-assisted breeding, genetic transformation, and gene-editing) to achieve achieving durable resistance to STB infection and minimise grain yield losses.

Winter wheat is planted in the autumn and must survive the winter months before being harvested the following summer. Winterhardiness is therefore of paramount importance to the survival of the crop. This chapter reviews recent advances in our understanding of the transcriptomic and genetic basis of the wheat plants’ response to low, above-freezing temperatures and to sub-freezing temperatures. We show that wheat plants enact numerous transcriptomic and metabolic networks in response to low temperatures, and that the response is exquisitely tied to the nature of the cold stress, the developmental status of the plant, the part of the plant and the time of day of the onset of low temperature.

Advances in cold-tolerant maize varieties

Maize, a thermophilic plant species, originates from subtropical highlands. Maize cultivation, however, has spread to temperate regions of the world that experience low temperatures during the early development of the plants. Maize genotypes that are cultivated in cooler climates need to have a short vegetation period and the ability to adapt to low temperatures. By growing cold-tolerant hybrids it is possible to achieve improvements in stand uniformity, the rate of plant development and the yield. In addition, cold-tolerant hybrids can be sown earlier, making it possible to grow hybrids with longer vegetation periods and greater yield potential. This chapter will discuss the physiological and genetic background of cold tolerance, the methodology required for its analysis, ways of improving cold tolerance by breeding, and the seed production aspects of this trait.
