Fusarium head blight, wheat blast and powdery mildew are among the serious damaging diseases of wheat, which are caused by fungi of Ascomycota phylum. Integrated approaches are mandatory for efficient control of all three diseases. Control measures may either contribute to reducing the abundance of inoculum (particularly ascospores or conidia) or hamper infection and/or disease development should inoculum be present. This chapter provides insight into agronomic control measures of all three diseases, including adoption of resistant cultivars. Case studies of genomics-assisted resistance breeding are also discussed. For all three
diseases, in addition to genetic control, designing optimal integrated control strategies and refining real-time, site-specific decision support systems are essential.

Several attempts have been made to classify business accounting approaches with respect to environmental issues. This chapter provides a short overview of such approaches, underlining their diversity in framing, methods and applications, and highlights recent attempts to standardise corporate natural capital accounting (CNCA), towards making the ‘going concern’ of natural capital stocks at the core of the accounting process. While CNCA generates both opportunities and challenges for agri-food industries, accounting for the state of biodiversity and other natural capital stocks throughout supply chains remains a major gap. Despite its obvious benefits for shared corporate accountability across value chains, there are significant barriers to broad-scale adoption in the short term, including ongoing research needs and significant capacity constraints/upskilling requirements.

United under the “cultural entrepreneurship” label, scholars have emphasized how entrepreneurship, strategic innovation, and organizational change are fundamentally cultural undertakings. Extant work in this vein has revealed how actors harness elements from their cultural milieu to secure the support of valued audiences, or undertake more profound changes to foster a cultural environment supportive of their endeavours. There are currently over 1.3 billion people globally who experience exclusion and inequality rooted in persistent and deep ableism. Quality research with and about disabled people is vital to changing this situation. Such research presents ethical challenges and complexities which have not been given the attention they deserve if we are to advance disability rights as promised by the UNCRPD and other equality and human rights commitments.

Considering important aspects of general ethical principles, including respect, consent, privacy and confidentiality, this volume of Advances in Research Ethics and Integrity fills that gap. It does so while also recognising the broad scope, diversity and significant size of the disabled population.

Experienced researchers from the field examine processes of disablement and the specificities which arise when researching the lives of people with physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments. Investments in drainage in irrigated agriculture are lagging well behind investments in irrigation. As a result, salinity and waterlogging problems now affect about 10–16% of these irrigated areas. To combat these problems and to cope with gradual changes in land use and a changing climate, the role of drainage has changed from a single-purpose measure for controlling waterlogging and/or salinity to an essential element of integrated water management under multiple land use scenarios. To give drainage its appropriate role in agricultural water management in irrigated agriculture, the current advances in drainage design and management are focussing on (i) creating more control, (ii) reducing the environmental effects of drainage, (iii) developing new materials and (iv) adapting the organization of drainage water management to increase farmer participation. In this chapter, these advances in drainage design and management are discussed with a focus on Egypt, a country with one of the largest drainage practices in the world.

This chapter reviews the emergence of the concept of 'farmer-led irrigation development' in the context of sub-Saharan Africa. It outlines a context in which formal irrigation in the region is considered to have under-performed, with consequent concern over lagging agricultural productivity and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Against this backdrop, there has been a growing recognition of investment in irrigation by small-scale farmers, motivated by opportunities to sell high value vegetables and rice to growing urban populations. The chapter reviews the literature on the phenomenon, briefly presents data from a case study and outlines key challenges and areas of future research.

The development of a vaccine for African swine fever (ASF) has been an ongoing topic of research in labs worldwide for many years, with increased interest following the 2007 outbreak in the Republic of Georgia. This initial outbreak has since spread causing continued outbreaks in Europe, Asia and most recently in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Recently a live-attenuated vaccine was approved and is the only commercially produced vaccine for ASF only approved for use in Vietnam. It remains that there is not a widely available commercial vaccine for countries suffering outbreaks of ASF in this chapter we will present how we were able to develop this vaccine, and how it became the lead candidate vaccine for ASF. Without a vaccine disease management for this current pandemic has been limited to restricting animal movement and culling of infected animals or farms. In this chapter the current state of ASF vaccine research is presented covering all published reports on subunit vaccines, naturally or cell culture passed viruses used as attenuated vaccine backbones, and live attenuated vaccines using targeted deletions in virulent ASFV isolates.
