Der Band wagt ein historiografisches Experiment, indem er gegenüber einem Entwicklungsmodell, das die Aufmerksamkeit auf vermeintliche Höhe- und Wendepunkte lenkt, sich jenen Momenten im Schlagschatten dieser „lauten“ Ereignisse zuwendet. Die Fragestellung des Bandes, der auf die 36. Kölner Mediävistentagung zurückgeht, will daher neue Perspektiven eröffnen, indem sie einlädt, Sehgewohnheiten in Frage zu stellen, zu schärfen, zu verlängern ‑ anhand eines Jahres und auch über dieses Jahr und seine historische Peripherie hinaus. Der Band enthält eine Reihe von Vorträgen, die vom 26.--29.5.1999 im Rahmen des internationalen Symposiums »150 Jahre Mabinogion - Deutsch-walisische Kulturbeziehungen« an der Universität Bonn gehalten wurden. Gegenstand der 20 Beiträge sind zum einen jene mittelalterlichen walisischen Erzählungen, die man seit der 1849 vollendeten Übersetzung von Lady Charlotte Guest unter dem Namen »Mabinogion« kennt, zum anderen die Geschichte der deutsch-walisischen Beziehungen, wie sie in Literatur, Kunst und Musik sowie in der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der keltischen Kultur Ausdruck gefunden haben.

Im Oktober 1863 hat - noch vor der Gründung des Deutschen Reichs - mit dem Badischen Verwaltungsgerichtshof in Karlsruhe das erste Verwaltungsgericht in Deutschland seine Arbeit aufgenommen, alsbald gefolgt von den anderen deutschen Ländern. Dies gibt Anlass, sich mit der Geschichte der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit in Deutschland während der letzten 150 Jahre zu befassen, beginnend mit ihrer damaligen Struktur und Zuständigkeit, mit Beispielen früher Rechtsprechung des PreußOVG, der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus bis zur Struktur der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit in der Bundesrepublik. Die Rechtsprechung als Spiegel der Zeitgeschichte wird ebenso dargestellt wie die Herausforderungen nach der Wiedervereinigung und Fragestellungen der neueren Zeit, etwa die nach der Schaffung eines einheitlichen Fachgerichts.
Der Beitrag basiert auf einem Vortrag, den der ehemalige Präsident des Bundesverwaltungsgerichts aus Anlass des Jubiläums im Oberverwaltungsgericht Berlin - Brandenburg, dem ursprünglichen Gebäude des PreußOVG gehalten hat.

Die heutige Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien ist aus der Kunstgewerbeschule des k. k. Österreichischen Museums für Kunst und Industrie hervorgegangen. 1867 gegründet, feiert sie nun ihr 150jähriges Jubiläum. Die Kunstgewerbeschule war eine der Geburtsstätten des Wiener Jugendstils, hier lehrten Josef Hoffmann und Kolo Moser, hier wurden Gustav Klimt und Oskar Kokoschka ausgebildet, und später auch die erste prominente Architektin Österreichs, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.

Das Buch gibt über die historische Entwicklung von der Kunstgewerbeschule bis zur heutigen „Angewandten" Auskunft. Erstmals werden Anklage, Verteidigung und Aburteilung Martin Luthers als rhetorischer Zusammenhang untersucht. Hat Luther seine berühmte Rede wirklich mit dem Ausruf „Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders!“ geschlossen? Was hat die "sola scriptura"-Forderung mit Luthers merkwürdigen Nachverhandlungen in Worms zu tun? Gehört das alles zur Renaissance und zum Beginn der Neuzeit?

Es tritt ein Komplex von Kommunikationsmaßnahmen um Luthers PR-Team und um seine eigenen rhetorischen Interaktionen auf dem Reichstag hervor. Die Rhetorik zeigt sich hier als der große Dynamikfaktor der Geschichte. Religionsgeschichtlich ragt Luthers Weckruf von 1517 als Datum heraus. Säkulargeschichtlich hingegen ist 1521 das entscheidende Jahr eines epochalen Aufbruchs zu neuen politischen Dimensionen. Schlüsselbegriff wird ab jetzt der "Protest". Er beginnt sich zwar erst langsam, aber unwiderruflich, als sozialkommunikative Institution in der westlichen Welt zu etablieren und zum komplementären Faktor gegenüber der Macht zu werden.
