How can we account, in a rigorous way, for alchemy's ubiquity? We think of alchemy as the transformation of a base material (usually lead) into gold, but "alchemy" is a word in wide circulation in everyday life, often called upon to fulfill a metaphoric duty as the magical transformation of materials. Almost every culture and time has had some form of alchemy. This book looks at alchemy, not at any one particular instance along the historical timeline, not as a practice or theory, not as a mode of redemption, but as a theoretical problem, linked to real gold and real production in the world. What emerges as the least common denominator or "intensive property" of alchemy is ambivalence, the impossible and paradoxical coexistence of two incompatible elements. Alchemical Mercury moves from antiquity, through the golden age of alchemy in the Dutch seventeenth century, to conceptual art, to alternative fuels, stopping to think with writers such as Dante, Goethe, Hoffmann, the Grimm Brothers, George Eliot, and Marx. Eclectic and wide-ranging, this is the first study to consider alchemy in relation to literary and visual theory in a comprehensive way.

Der Arzt und Alchemiker Johann Otto von Helbig (1654–1698) verknüpfte in seinen theoretischen Schriften und seiner alchemischen Praxis europäisches mit ostindischem Wissen, das er während seines Aufenthaltes in Ostindien (Batavia) erworben hatte. Er verband beide Wissensbereiche in einer eigenen alchemischen Kosmologie. Mit der Substanz „Tessa" glaubte er den für Gesundung und Transmutation notwendigen Grundstoff geschaffen zu haben, der für kurze Zeit das Interesse der alchemisch interessierten Öffentlichkeit weckte und Helbig den Zugang zu den Fürstenhöfen eröffnete. Dort versuchte er seine naturphilosophischen Vorstellungen im Labor in die Realität umzusetzen.
Eine annotierte Bibliographie, eine kommentierte Edition der bisher weitgehend unbekannten Briefe und Dokumente sowie alchemische Experimentaltexte geben Einblick in die alchemische Praxis Helbigs und die mit dem Scheitern verbundenen Schwierigkeiten. Die Edition leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung der frühneuzeitlichen Alchemie an Fürstenhöfen.

Mit den Commentaria et Lexica Graeca in Papyris reperta wird der Fachwelt ein einzigartiges papyrologisches Sammelwerk vorgelegt. Die bisher verstreut publizierten, auf Papyrus erhaltenen Teile antiker griechischer Kommentare - d.h. der Hypomnemata und Randnotizen zu griechischen Autoren sowie der Glossare und Lexika - werden in diesem Lexikon alphabetisch zusammengeführt.

Zu jedem im Lexikon erfassten Fragment erhält der Benutzer zunächst einen Überblick über Herkunft, Entstehungszeit und derzeitigen Aufbewahrungsort sowie über alle dazu bisher erschienenen Publikationen. Darauf folgen die Anmerkungen unter Auswertung aller vorliegenden Aspekte in der jeweiligen Landessprache des Kommentators. Das Werk wird von mehr als 40 Wissenschaftlern aus verschiedenen europäischen und außereuropäischen Ländern erarbeitet.

Okinawan life, at the crossroads of American militarism and Japanese capitalism, embodies a fundamental contradiction to the myth of the monoethnic state. Suspended in a state of exception, Okinawans have never been officially classified as colonial subjects of the Japanese empire or the United States, nor have they ever been treated as equal citizens of Japan. As a result, they live amid one of the densest concentrations of U.S. military bases in the world. By bringing Foucauldian biopolitics into conversation with Japanese Marxian theorizations of capitalism, Alegal uncovers Japan’s determination to protect its middle class from the racialized sexual contact around its mainland bases by displacing them onto Okinawa, while simultaneously upholding Okinawa as a symbol of the infringement of Japanese sovereignty figured in terms of a patriarchal monoethnic state.

This symbolism, however, has provoked ambivalence within Okinawa. In base towns that facilitated encounters between G.I.s and Okinawan women, the racial politics of the United States collided with the postcolonial politics of the Asia Pacific. Through close readings of poetry, reportage, film, and memoir on base-town life since 1945, Shimabuku traces a continuing failure to “become Japanese.” What she discerns instead is a complex politics surrounding sex work, tipping with volatility along the razor’s edge between insurgency and collaboration. At stake in sovereign power’s attempt to secure Okinawa as a military fortress was the need to contain alegality itself—that is, a life force irreducible to the legal order. If biopolitics is the state’s attempt to monopolize life, then Alegal is a story about how borderland actors reclaimed the power of life for themselves.

In addition to scholars of Japan and Okinawa, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in postcolonialism, militarism, mixed-race studies, gender and sexuality, or the production of sovereignty in the modern world.
