Most anthologies of Irish literature deal only with Irish literature in English, that which is gerally referred to as Anglo-Irish literature. Most of them also deal only with Irish writers of the twentieth century. An Anthology of Irish Literature is an exception to both these tendencies. The selections represent Irish literature from the seventh century through the twentieth century.
Volume I contains translations of medieval Irish poetry and narratives, many of which, though transcribed in Middle Irish, are from an older oral tradition. The volume also offers examples of Irish lyric poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries and translations from 19th century Irish poets.
All the selections in Volume II were originally written in English. Beginning with some anonymous poems, it includes Swift's famous essay on Irish children and works by Oliver Goldsmith. Virtually all of modern Irish literature written in English was a part of the literary movement known as the Irish Renaissance. This grew from the desire of Irish writers to maintain a literary tradition by creating a modern literature which drew sustenance and inspiration from the Gaelic past. It was a nationalistic movement, and was bound up with the political movement which culminated in the Easter 1916 Rising and the "Anglo-Irish" war of 1918-1921. The most famous writers of the Irish Renaissance were George Bernard Shaw, W.B. Yeats, Sean O'Casey, James Joyce and Frank O'Connor.

This anthology aims to challenge stereotypes of women travellers. Rather than simply presenting writings by Victorian women who travelled bravely around the world disregarding social convention and danger, the editors present a range of writing and possible ways of being a woman traveller.

As well as the ‘eccentric’ woman traveller, the editors have included writings by those who might be seen as failed travellers, cautious and conventional travellers and those who did not conform to the adventurous heroine stereotype. Because travelling as a woman and writing as a woman presents the author with a number of textual problems which must be negotiated, Foster and Mills have chosen to include writings which confronted these problems and which resolved them (or did not resolve them) in different ways.

These textual problems include the depiction of other women, the representation of spatial relations, the negotiations undertaken in relation to the adventure heroine narrative and character and the position taken by the author in relation to the representation of knowledge. These issues are all crucial in relation to travel writing by women , and the women, whose writing has been collected together in this anthology have made bold decisions in relation to them.

Our political age is characterized by forms of description as ‘big’ as the world itself: talk of ‘public knowledge’ and ‘public goods,’ ‘the commons’ or ‘global justice’ create an exigency for modes of governance that leave little room for smallness itself. Rather than question the politics of adjudication between the big and the small, this book inquires instead into the cultural epistemology fueling the aggrandizement and miniaturization of description itself. Incorporating analytical frameworks from science studies, ethnography, and political and economic theory, this book charts an itinerary for an internal anthropology of theorizing. It suggests that many of the effects that social theory uses today to produce insights are the legacy of baroque epistemological tricks. In particular, the book undertakes its own trompe l’oeil as it places description at perpendicular angles to emerging forms of global public knowledge. The aesthetic ‘trap’ of the trompe l’oeil aims to capture knowledge, for only when knowledge is captured can it be properly released.

All over the world, people disappear from their families, communities and the state’s bureaucratic gaze, as victims of oppressive regimes or while migrating along clandestine routes. This volume brings together scholars who engage ethnographically with such disappearances in various cultural, social and political contexts. It takes an anthropological perspective on questions about human life and death, absence and presence, rituals and mourning, liminality and structures, citizenship and personhood as well as agency and power. The chapters explore the political dimension of disappearances and address methodological, epistemological and ethical challenges of researching disappearances and the disappeared. In his final work, one that distills decades of research and thought, a distinguished economic thinker turned social scientist and philosopher confronts three crucial questions facing the world at the end of the century: How and in what form can a harmonious and stable post-cold war world order be created? How can the world maintain the economic performance necessary for the well-being of people while minimizing international economic conflicts and further deterioration of the world’s environment? What must be done to safeguard the freedoms of all peoples?

In attempting to answer these questions, Murakami criticizes classical political-economic analysis and offers his own “anticlassical” analyses and visions for the next century. By classical political-economic analysis, Murakami refers to analyses of power politics based on the nation-state system and to classical and neoclassical economic analysis which holds that unimpeded competition and free trade are fundamental bases for increasing wealth for the benefit of all. Murakami’s anticlassical stance takes the form of a new, intellectually integrated and reasoned concept called “polymorphic liberalism,” which argues that traditional “progressivism”—the belief that humans have an ultimate unique path on which they will reach an ideal social and political-economic system—can no longer meet today’s challenges.

This monograph examines the problem of universally inclusive language in the book of Revelation and the resulting narrative tension created by narrowly exclusive language. Analysis is conducted by placing relevant texts within their literary-narrative context and through consideration of how the author understood and appropriated biblical traditions. A key feature of this study is its examination of four early Jewish documents with significant similarities to the problem being examined in Revelation. From these documents (Tobit; Similitudes of Enoch [1 Enoch 37-71]; 4 Ezra; and, Animal Apocalypse [1 Enoch 85-90]) a contextual picture emerges which allows a fuller understanding of Revelation’s distinctive approach toward the problem of the fate of the nations. This study contends that the interpretive strategies applied to biblical traditions in Revelation have their roots in the wider early Jewish milieu. From this comparative analysis, identifiable patterns with regard to the role of ‘universal terminology’ in the communicative strategy of John’s Apocalypse emerge.

When Sam Milton tries to apologize to the beautiful Chantell León, a top recording artist, for a minor traffic accident, the apology goes horribly wrong. As Jim Crow curtailed modes of political protest and legal redress, members of the Afro-American League and the organizations that formed in its wake—including the Afro-American Council, the Niagara Movement, the Constitution League, and the Committee of Twelve—used propaganda, moral suasion, boycotts, lobbying, electoral office, and the courts, as well as the call for self-defense, to end disfranchisement, segregation, and racial violence. In the process, the League and the organizations it spawned provided the ideological and strategic blueprint of the NAACP and the struggle for civil rights in the twentieth century, demonstrating that there was significant and effective agitation during "the age of accommodation."

As a physician and renowned medical researcher, Carl Nathan has been at the forefront of discoveries in microbiology and immunology.
