Die Analogie wird trotz einiger neuer Ansätze immer noch äußerst kontrovers diskutiert. Entweder wird sie als originelle Denkform, als Gefahr für die Wissenschaft oder als der Metapher untergeordnete rhetorische Figur verstanden. Die Arbeit macht es sich erstmals zur Aufgabe diese verschiedenen Zuschreibungsformen der Analogie aus ihren antiken Definitionen herzuleiten und deren wechselweise Abhängigkeit aufzuzeigen. Sie kann damit nicht nur neue Erkenntnisse hinsichtlich der mathematischen, wissenschaftlich-heuristischen und rhetorischen Funktionen der Analogie zu Tage fördern, sondern auch darlegen, inwiefern die Analogie schon seit ihren ersten Definitionen zwischen den Feldern von Wissenschaft und Ästhetik agiert und beide ›Kulturen‹ aufeinander zu beziehen weiß. Dies macht sie insbesondere für die Moderne interessant, wo sich vor dem Hintergrund der idealistischen Erkenntniskrise, dem Ausdifferenzierungsprozess der Wissenschaften und den ästhetischen Darstellungsfragen Probleme der Vermittlung ergeben. Die Arbeit zeigt anhand von Kant, Novalis und Goethe, wie die Analogie sowohl deren philosophisch/wissenschaftliche Denkweisen als auch deren ästhetischen Darstellungskonzepte strukturiert. Many studies have focused their interest on the role played by analogy within English inflectional morphology. However, the analogical mechanism also deserves investigation on account of its relevance to neology in English. This volume provides in-depth qualitative analyses and stimulating quantitative findings in this realm.

This allows for a comprehensive analysis of normative attitudes towards parenting, showing how class and ethnicity interact with traditional assumptions of gender and biology to produce a genre of literature that is quite restrictive, perpetuating ideas of ‘intensive mothering’.

Situating these advice books within the context of parenting experts, the US fatherhood movement, the so-called ‘boy crisis’, cultural prejudice towards single mothers and what has been termed ‘neurosexism’ and ‘neuroparenting’, this study analyses the way in which the books draw on mother-blame language, misconceptions of neuropsychological research and traditional conceptualisations of masculinity and femininity to convince the mother readers that they are unable to raise a son to be a man. Using prescriptive and often alarmist language, the authors privilege traditional assumptions of gender, hegemonic masculinity and heteronormative family structures over single parent families, same-sex parenting and single mothers by choice (via adoption or ART). In doing so, the books afford very narrow parenting roles, for fathers as well as mothers, as well as a very limited range of masculine identities for young boys. Presented as common sense advice, these books are widely read by women seeking support and it is thus vital that they be interrogated for the way they continue to construct, shape and influence expectations on parenting, as well as the identities of young boys.
