In this volume, scholars from different disciplines – Old English and Anglo-Latin literature and linguistics, palaeography, history, runology, numismatics and archaeology – explore what are here called ‘micro-texts’, i.e. very short pieces of writing constituting independent, self-contained texts. For the first time, these micro-texts are here studied in their forms and communicative functions, their pragmatics and performativity.

Anglophobia in Fascist Italy traces the origins and development of anti-British sentiment in Fascist Italy, as Britain turned from being an ally in the First World War to an enemy in the Second. The book demonstrates that Fascist ideologues framed Britain as a stagnant and decaying country and the polar opposite of Fascism’s new civilisation, to the point that the regime’s assessment of British political resolve and military might were distorted by ideological bias. The book offers a thorough analysis of diplomatic, military and journalistic sources and demonstrates that anti-British tropes had permeated Italy to a greater degree than was previously believed.

Between 1970 and 1972 the Angry Brigade used guns and bombs in a series of symbolic attacks against property. A series of communiqués accompanied the actions, explaining the choice of targets and the Angry Brigade philosophy: autonomous organization and attacks on property alongside other forms of militant working class action. Targets included the embassies of repressive regimes, police stations and army barracks, boutiques and factories, government departments and the homes of Cabinet ministers, the Attorney General and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. These attacks on the homes of senior political figures increased the pressure for results and brought an avalanche of police raids. From the start the police were faced with the difficulty of getting to grips with a section of society they found totally alien. And were they facing an organization—or an idea?

This documentary, produced by Gordon Carr for the BBC (and first shown in January 1973, shortly after the trial), covers the roots of the Angry Brigade in the revolutionary ferment of the 1960s, and follows their campaign and the police investigation to its culmination in the “Stoke Newington 8” conspiracy trial at the Old Bailey—the longest criminal trial in British legal history. Produced after extensive research—among both the libertarian opposition and the police—it remains the essential study of Britain’s first urban guerilla group.

The so-called “Persons Unknown” case in which members of the Anarchist Black Cross were tried (and later acquitted) at the Old Bailey on charges of “conspiring with persons unknown, at places unknown, to cause explosions and to overthrow society.” Featuring interviews and footage of Stuart Christie, Nicholas Walter, Crass and many other UK anarchist activists and propagandists of the time.

A young child tells us what makes her angry and how she tries to let the anger come and go. An artful starting point for conversations about strong feelings.

“I get angry,” says a little girl, looking fiercely in the mirror. Sometimes she gets angry when someone is mean and tries to take her toy away, when it feels unfair that there’s not enough time to go swimming, when she’s tired and just wants to go home, or when the kids at school leave her out, hurting her feelings.

When she’s angry, she tries to remember to use her words — even though that doesn’t always work. Sometimes she can’t find the right words, or the words don’t come out the way she intends. But sometimes words do help, and when her anger melts away a new feeling can blossom.

Sandra Feder’s cleverly constructed text presents different situations in which a child might feel angry, creating a nuanced look at anger and its many underlying emotions. Rahele Jomepour Bell’s illustrations show a loveable, angry little girl, brimming with personality, who learns how to express herself as she moves through her feelings.

Die vorliegende Studie hat „Angst und Entängstigung“ in Kierkegaards Schrift „Begriff Angst“ zum Thema und versucht, durch detaillierte Textarbeit das hier beschriebene Phänomen der Angst als einen wesentlichen Teil des menschlichen Gefühlslebens in seiner vollen Begrifflichkeit zu entfalten.

Die Arbeit ist in drei Teile gegliedert: der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit den theologischen und metaphysisch-existentialistischen Grundlagen von Kierkegaards Schrift, der zweite Teil behandelt die Begriffe Angst und Entängstigung, der dritte Teil stellt die Angstthematik in den philosophischen Horizont der idealistischen und nachidealistischen Philosophie. Der Übergang zum dritten Kapitel ist eine detaillierte tabellarische Darstellung der Angst in ihren wesentlichen Momenten, die die komplexe Entfaltung der Angstthematik übersichtlich macht und vor allem die These von der anthropologischen Grundlegung in ihren verschiedenen Stadien nachzeichnet.

Mit der sich am Text durchgängig bestätigenden These, dass Kierkegaards Ansatz eine hamartologisch begründete Anthropologie zugrunde liegt, will die Studie eine der schwierigsten und dunkelsten Abhandlungen Kierkegaards in ihrer ganzen Komplexität erhellen.

Das Markusevangelium endet mit Angst und Schrecken am leeren Grab, und auch vorher durchzog Angstvokabular das ganze Evangelium. May-Britt Melzer untersucht dieses Vokabular mit einer Kombination aus kognitiv-narratologischen und semantischen Methoden. Unterstützt durch Korpuslinguistik werden neue Aspekte von Angstemotionen im 1. Jh. herausgearbeitet: Es zeigt sich, dass Angstemotionen sowohl in einer beziehungsabbrechenden als auch einer in beziehungsaufbauenden, ehrfürchtigen Form verwendet werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund ergeben sich für das Markusevangelium drei Thesen: Erstens verwendet Markus ausschließlich die beziehungsabbrechende Form von Angst. Diese steht in Verbindung mit dem im Evangelium diagnostizierten Mangel an Glauben/Vertrauen und Verständnis. Zweitens reagiert das Evangelium auf zeitgenössische Diskussionen zum Thema „Angst“, die bei römischen Historikern mit dem Stichwort metus temporum verbunden sind. Drittens bildet das Evangelium die Grundlage für eine emotional community, also eine Gruppierung, die sich u.a. über ihre Emotionen definiert.
