Chronologie ist archäologische Grundlagenforschung. Doch sind die verwendeten Chronologiemodelle auch von der schriftlichen Überlieferung unabhängig?
Die vorliegende Studie untersucht dieses Problem für das 5. bis 8. Jahrhundert in Süddeutschland und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass schriftliche Quellen auch heute noch weitreichenden Einfluss auf die Chronologie der Merowingerzeit haben. Hierzu zählen u.a. der Konflikt zwischen Franken und Alemannen in den Jahren um 500, die Eingliederung der Alamannia in das Merowingerreich sowie der Fall des Thüringerreiches 531. Doch auch das oft verwendete Generationenkonzept ist Gegenstand kritischer Betrachtungen.
Im zweiten Teil seiner Studie stellt der Autor daher ein neues Chronologiemodell vor, das auf statistischen Auswertungen von mehr als 650 relevanten Grabfunden aus Süddeutschland basiert und erstmals auch das 7. und 8. Jahrhundert einbezieht. Durch ausführliche und reich illustrierte Appendices ist künftig eine schnelle und sichere chronologische Ansprache merowingerzeitlicher Grabfunde aus Süddeutschland möglich.

Diese Arbeit wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Barbara-Scholkmann-Förderpreis für historische Archäologie (2018).

Archelaos von Athen, eine oft übersehene Figur der Philosophiegeschichte, wird in den meisten erhaltenen Zeugnissen als Schüler des Anaxagoras und Lehrer des Sokrates beschrieben. Archetypes from Underground: Notes on the Dostoevskian Self uncovers archetypal imagery in Dostoevsky’s stories and novels and argues that archetypes bring a new dimension to our understanding and appreciation of his works. In this interdisciplinary study, Harrison analyzes selected texts in light of fresh research in Dostoevsky studies, cultural history, comparative mythology, and depth psychology. He argues that one of Dostoevsky's chief concerns is the crisis of modernity, and that he dramatizes the conflicts of the modern self by depicting the dynamic, transformative nature of the psyche. Harrison finds the language and imagery of archetypes in Dostoevsky’s characters, symbols, and themes, and shows how these resonate in remarkable ways with the archetypes of self, persona, and the shadow. He demonstrates that major themes in Dostoevsky coincide with Western esotericism, such as the complementarity of opposites, transformation, and the symbolism of death and resurrection. Presents the first comprehensive edited collection of commissioned essays by leading scholars that examine the diverse forms and functions of the gothic across Philippine literature, cinema, television, and comics, reframing the genre through the lens of colonial histories, regional cultures, and globalization

Archipelagothic: The Gothic in Philippine Culture is a volume that brings together essays that examine the place of the gothic in Philippine literary and visual culture, which includes Philippine literature in English, Tagalog literature, regional literature, cinema, TV, and comics and graphic novels. These essays collectively suggest that the Philippines’s longue durée of multiple colonialisms, archipelagic configuration, uneven effects and experiences of globalization, and various regional cultures have variously and uniquely transformed the idea of the gothic. The volume thus also serves as diverse theoretical elaborations of the concept of archipelagothic, designating a term that is attentive to the gothic multiplicity in Philippine culture as well as an approach to reading gothic texts that emphasize relationality, decoloniality, and multiplicity.

In the collection, Jeremy De Chavez’s introductory essay offers a theoretical elaboration of the archipelagothic. Thomas Leonard Shaw’s essay examines the gothic in Philippine Anglophone writing by looking at three thematic categories—1) the tropical gothic, 2) the urban gothic and 3) the domestic gothic—across a selection of texts spanning from the 1940s to the more contemporary 2010s. Edgar Calabia Samar’s essay examines contemporary Tagalog literature’s engagement with the gothic. Genevieve Asenjo’s essay examines literary texts from the Visayan region of the Philippines that perform the archipelagic tropes of the Philippine gothic, which she argues is rooted in its enduring shamanistic tradition and verbal arts of epic chanting and storytelling.

Louie Jon Sanchez’s essay examines how in the past 70 years of Philippine TV broadcasting, gothic tendencies may be observed in two popular televisual formats: the documentary gothic in episodes of news and current affairs formats and the melodramatic gothic in representational drama formats such as the occasional drama anthology/movies for TV and the soap opera, locally called the “teleserye” (television series). Rose Arong examines the formal elements of the komiks and graphic novel genre as a way to discuss the thematic variations of the gothic, which are products of the artistic negotiation of foreign influence and local adaptation. The volume includes a helpful glossary of terms prepared by Michael Justine Sales and Nikka Joy Abenoja.

Previous research on Joseph Urban (1872–1933) has focused on his architectural career; yet after moving from Vienna to the U.S. in 1912, he devoted much of his energies to the stage, especially productions for the Metropolitan Opera and the Ziegfeld Follies. A seminal figure in the history of American theater, he introduced to the U.S. the sophistication of European developments in stage design, experiments with lighting, and painterly effects which paralleled developments in modernist literature, painting, and dance.

Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) is regarded as one of the leading theorists of the Neues Bauen movement in pre-War Germany, and of modern, functional urbanism. This set of accomplishments still dominates the public image of the architect, urban planner, teacher and art critic to this day. His development beyond that period has long been neglected.

The essays in this collection seek to fill this gap, offering an exciting and wide-ranging new perspective on the work of a central protagonist of modernism. Architects of Austerity argues that the seeds of neoliberal politics were sown in the 1950s and 1960s. Suggesting that the postwar era was less socially democratic than we think, Aaron Major presents a comparative-historical analysis of economic policy in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy during the early 1960s. In each of these cases, domestic politics shifted to the left and national governments repudiated the conservative economic policies of the past, promising a new way forward. Yet, these social democratic experiments were short-lived and deeply compromised. Why did the parties of change become the parties of austerity?

Studies of social welfare policy in these countries have emphasized domestic factors. However, Major reveals that international social forces profoundly shaped national decisions in these cases. The turn toward more conservative economic policies resulted from two critical shifts on the international stage. International monetary organizations converged around an orthodox set of ideas, and a set of institutional transformations within the Bretton Woods system made the monetary community more central to financial management. These changes gave central banks and treasuries the capacity to impose their ideas on national governments.

Architects, Sustainability and the Climate Emergency: A Political Ecology chronicles how architects have shaped their ideas of the city—and sustainability—as knowledge of the climate emergency has unfolded. Describing a political ecology of architecture, Peter Raisbeck draws on architectural history, theory and practice, and the climate imaginaries of architects themselves. This exploration indicates how architects have viewed the climate emergency and positions architecture alongside the politics of climate and development studies. Raisbeck questions to what degree the traditional agency of architects leads to a political authority isolated from nature, human-environment systems and the nonhuman ecological subjects rapidly approaching tipping points.

The fluidity of the climate emergency itself and its unfolding relationship to architectural knowledge suggests that new approaches, agencies and subjectivities are urgently required. Architecture is increasingly understood to be a sensual, spatial experience, which means that the experience of buildings and spatial constellations is also a perception of atmospheres that are rated as positive or negative. Architects, planners, investors, and politicians must produce effects such as these according to intersubjective and communicable criteria, and not intuitively or randomly.

Finland’s 1998 architectural education policy: did it work, and could it be used elsewhere?

The studioli of the ducal palaces at Urbino and Gubbio, Italy, demonstrate architecture's capacity to transact between the mental and physical realms of human experience. Constructed between 1474 and 1483 for the military captain Federico da Montefeltro and his young motherless son, the studioli may be described as treasuries of emblems: they contain not things but images of things, rendered with remarkable perspectival exactitude.

These small, image-filled chambers reflect how architecture and its ornament equipped a quattrocento mind with metaphors for wisdom and methods for statecraft and intellectual activity. Drawing on the densely layered imagery in the studioli and text sources readily available to the Urbino court, Robert Kirkbride examines the position of the studioli in the Western tradition of the memory arts, considering how architecture bridged the mathematical arts, which lent themselves to mechanical pursuits, and the art of rhetoric, a discipline central to memory and eloquence.

As subtle ramifications of material and mental craft, the studioli provided ideal methods for education and prudent governance, extending an ancient legacy of open-ended models that were conceived to activate the imagination and exercise the memory. At the time of their construction, the studioli represented the leading edge of technologies of visual representation and offer a case study of how contemporary advances in interactive technologies reactivate and transform ancient metaphors for thought and learning.
