Automorphic Representations, L-Functions and Applications: Progress and Prospects
Regular price $266.00 Save $-266.00This volume is the proceedings of the conference on Automorphic Representations, L-functions and Applications: Progress and Prospects, held at the Department of Mathematics of The Ohio State University, March 27–30, 2003, in honor of the 60th birthday of Steve Rallis.
The theory of automorphic representations, automorphic L-functions and their applications to arithmetic continues to be an area of vigorous and fruitful research. The contributed papers in this volume represent many of the most recent developments and directions, including
- Rankin–Selberg L-functions (Bump, Ginzburg–Jiang–Rallis, Lapid–Rallis)
- the relative trace formula (Jacquet, Mao–Rallis)
- automorphic representations (Gan–Gurevich, Ginzburg–Rallis–Soudry)
- representation theory of p-adic groups (Baruch, Kudla–Rallis, Mœglin, Cogdell–Piatetski-Shapiro–Shahidi)
- p-adic methods (Harris–Li–Skinner, Vigneras), and
- arithmetic applications (Chinta–Friedberg–Hoffstein).
The survey articles by Bump, on the Rankin–Selberg method, and by Jacquet, on the relative trace formula, should be particularly useful as an introduction to the key ideas about these important topics.
This volume should be of interest both to researchers and students in the area of automorphic representations, as well as to mathematicians in other areas interested in having an overview of current developments in this important field.

⢠Defines the meanings of automotive acronyms like ABS, PS, CPU and VIN.
Automotive High Speed Communication Technologies
Regular price $109.99 Save $-109.99The demands for processing power, software, and communication are continuously increasing; in all industries and also in the automotive one. In vehicles, the need for higher data rates is driven by more electronic functions in general, but especially by ever more potent (camera) sensors, displays, and high performance ECUs.
This book provides a holistic view on new SerDes and Ethernet high-speed communication solutions for cars. It addresses core physical components such as cables, connectors, or PCB design, as well as physical layer processing, use-case-specific protocols, and the use cases as such. It is important to the authors not only to explain the technologies, but also to provide context and background in respect to various technical choices. The intent is to help readers understand the current eco-system end-to-end, whether they are new to the automotive industry or experts who want to deepen their understanding on specific items, whether they are working for a car manufacturer directly or any of the suppliers, whether they are already involved or evaluating to get involved.
Automotive Human Centred Design Methods
Regular price $39.99 Save $-39.99There is currently a great need for introductory materials to help professionals of all types to understand and deploy Human Centred Design (HCD) methods. This compendium, written in simple everyday language by authors who are experts in automotive ergonomics, UX and HMI, is inclusive and easily accessible.
The 21st century is characterised by ever greater reliance on the innovation paradigm of HCD. In many sectors, the practices of "technology push" and "market pull" have been giving ground to newer ways of innovating which are based more on careful attention to the characteristics and needs of people. Where ethnographic, ergonomic and UX practices were once the remit of only the design teams, the practices and values of HCD are now permeating widely, leading in many cases to business restructuring. The automotive sector, characterised by large and sophisticated organisations, and by more than a century of success, is one sector with extensive requirements for HCD methods.
This introductory book links the philosophy of the Human Centred Design innovation to the basic methods and simple everyday steps which can be taken to better understand customers and to better define briefs and tests. The book will prove a valuable reference to automotive designers who wish to more deeply integrate HCD into their everyday work, and to any professional who wishes to widen her or his skill set and understanding of HCD. The information regarding the selection of HCD methods, and their deployment, will provide a gentle introduction to the world of Human Centred Design.

“Automotive Milestomes is a clear presentation of the internal workings of the automobile over the years…you will enjoy reading this book.”
—William J. Crochetiere, Professor Emeritus, Tufts University
This is a general-interest trade book that describes the development of automotive technology and engineering from the start of the industry before 1900 to the present day. It explains how various systems and elements in the automobile work in layman’s terms, without resorting to mathematics, and highlights the key milestones in the historical development of automotive technology. All photos and illustrations are in full color.
The intended audience is older teens to adults of any age who are interested in cars and may be involved with them as a hobby. Sometimes referred to as “gearheads ” or “motorheads,” they form a huge market. Over the years, many of the author’s engineering students were in this category, and he often would meet with on-campus car clubs to explain the internal workings of automobiles, being careful to damp down or eliminate any complicated mathematics—just as he does in this book.
The other books that cover this subject are either “hard-engineering oriented”— such as publications from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) — or just compendiums of dates without much explanation at all of how the changes in technology actually work, which is the aim of this book.

Autonomy
Regular price $29.00 Save $-29.00From bass player to lead guitarist, singer and last remaining founding member, Steve Diggle has been the driving force keeping Buzzcocks alive since he first met Pete Shelley in 1976. Together they would ignite the Manchester music scene, kickstart indie and become one of the best loved and most influential punk groups of all time.
Following Shelley’s untimely death in 2018, Autonomy is Diggle’s definitive inside account of their shared musical legacy and complex friendship through the band’s rise, fall, and rise again – from their punk origins supporting Sex Pistols with original singer Howard Devoto to Top of the Pops, the excess of success, break-up, reformation and life beyond bereavement.
Funny, honest and touchingly philosophical, it is also Diggle’s very personal story of working class escape, dreams, redemption and loss – an ultimately heroic survivor’s tale from an irrepressible rock ’n’ roll spirit.

Autonomy Is in Our Hearts
Regular price $23.95 Save $-23.95Following the Zapatista uprising on New Year’s Day 1994, the EZLN communities of Chiapas began the slow process of creating a system of autonomous government that would bring their call for freedom, justice, and democracy from word to reality. Autonomy Is in Our Hearts analyzes this long and arduous process on its own terms, using the conceptual language of Tsotsil, a Mayan language indigenous to the highland Zapatista communities of Chiapas.
The words “Freedom,” “Justice,” and “Democracy” emblazoned on the Zapatista flags are only approximations of the aspirations articulated in the six indigenous languages spoken by the Zapatista communities. They are rough translations of concepts such as ichbail ta muk’ or “mutual recognition and respect among equal persons or peoples,” a’mtel or “collective work done for the good of a community” and lekil kuxlejal or “the life that is good for everyone.” Autonomy Is in Our Hearts provides a fresh perspective on the Zapatistas and a deep engagement with the daily realities of Zapatista autonomous government. Simultaneously an exposition of Tsotsil philosophy and a detailed account of Zapatista governance structures, this book is an indispensable commentary on the Zapatista movement of today.

Autopornografie

Autoportraits
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00The self as a subject is one of the most fascinating and fruitful of artistic enterprises. From the 15th century to today, this collection brings together some of the best examples of self-portraiture to explore the genre’s evolution over the centuries as well as the enduring questions of selfhood and self-representation that have besieged human experience for centuries before social media and the selfie. Is a self-portrait of an artist a medium of reflection? Or is it merely a black void, the “false mirror,” as the Surrealist René Magritte entitled his 1928 painting of an eye? How much does it impart about contemporary notions of beauty, power, and status? From Albrecht Dürer to Egon Schiele, Fra Filippo Lippi to Frida Kahlo, this far-reaching collection explores the numerous ways in which artists have taken themselves as subjects, the variety of ingenious methods and perspectives they have used, and the intriguing questions they raise.
Autopsia
Regular price $320.00 Save $-320.00There are certain things that can be explained and certain things that cannot be explained. This book is about the latter. It is a book about death: how death interrupts and influences the reflection on the self. It is a book about God: a detailed and critical discussion on how Kierkegaard and Derrida apply the concept of God in their philosophical reflections.
The most ground-breaking analysis concerns the famous passage on the self (A.A) in The Sickness unto Death, where the author combines logical, rhetorical and dialectical means to establish a new perspective on Kierkegaard’s thinking in general. The Cartesian doubt then constitutes a common trait for his detailed and rigorous analysis of Derrida and Kierkegaard on death, madness, faith, and rationality – showing how they both seek to break up the Hegelian Aufhebung from within, but still remain dependent on Hegel.
After Kierkegaard and Derrida, the certainty and total uncertainty of death – and of God as infinite other – gives the self a basic, though non-foundational, responsibility. The significance of this responsibility, of this other, of this death, requires sustained and thorough consideration. Where others mark a conclusion, this book therefore marks a point of departure: reflecting on oneself at the graveside of a dead man – thus introducing an Autopsia.
Autopsy of a Boring Wife

All the details are up for scrutiny in this brisk, yet tender story of a path to recovery. Autopsy of a Boring Wife is a wonderfully fresh novel of the pitfalls of an apparently “boring” life that could be any of ours.

"That's not my fingerprint, your honor," said the defendant, after FBI experts reported a "100-percent identification." The FBI was wrong. It is shocking how often they are. Autopsy of a Crime Lab is the first book to catalog the sources of error and the faulty science behind a range of well-known forensic evidence, from fingerprints and firearms to forensic algorithms. In this devastating forensic takedown, noted legal expert Brandon L. Garrett poses the questions that should be asked in courtrooms every day: Where are the studies that validate the basic premises of widely accepted techniques such as fingerprinting? How can experts testify with 100-percent certainty about a fingerprint, when there is no such thing as a 100 percent match? Where is the quality control at the crime scenes and in the laboratories? Should we so readily adopt powerful new technologies like facial recognition software and rapid DNA machines? And why have judges been so reluctant to consider the weaknesses of so many long-accepted methods?
Taking us into the lives of the wrongfully convicted or nearly convicted, into crime labs rocked by scandal, and onto the front lines of promising reform efforts driven by professionals and researchers alike, Autopsy of a Crime Lab illustrates the persistence and perniciousness of shaky science and its well-meaning practitioners.

Autopsy of Post-Finlandization
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00During the publication event of her biography, the former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, stated that she refused to actively advance the Ukrainian NATO membership because there was an example of a successful, non-aligned Russian neighbor in Europe. The country was Finland, widely recognized for her staunch support for Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
However, this is not the whole story.
Certainly, soon after the invasion, Helsinki decided to join NATO—breaking the tradition of a bilateral »special relationship« with Russia, originally stemming from a traumatic Cold War history of forced appeasement. During the Soviet era, Finland had been treated by the KGB as an »experimental laboratory« for different forms of political, economic, military, intelligence, and informational coercion.
Not only did the Soviets learn and test new strategies. Especially after the collapse of the USSR, Finland and Finnish »friends« were used to promote Russian strategic interests within the European Union. The roots of »Schröderization«, the Nord Stream pipeline, and the EU citizenship of Vladimir Putin’s closest oligarchs can be traced to Helsinki.
During the era of transatlantic turmoil and new power politics, it is essential to understand the depth and methods of the Russian influence activities in Europe. This book illustrates them holistically by focusing on the Finnish example, not forgetting wider geopolitical contextualization, e.g. implications for Ukraine, debate on European strategic autonomy, and continental memory politics.

Autorretratos

Autumn
Regular price $33.99 Save $-33.99Discover how this transitional season can reveal both the abundance and the limitations of our everyday lives.

If summer has been something of a pause, autumn helps us to see the passage of time more clearly.
Autumn is a season of fruition and reaping, of thanksgiving and celebration of abundance and goodness of the earth. But it is also a season that starkly and realistically encourages us to see our own limitations.
Warm and stirring pieces by E. B. White, Anne Lamott, P. D. James, Julian of Norwich, May Sarton, Kimiko Hahn, and many others in this beautiful book rejoice in autumn as a time of preparation and reflection, when the results of hard labor are ripe for harvest.

Auxiliary Selection Revisited
Regular price $140.00 Save $-140.00A central debate about the description of auxiliary selection concerns the regularity of auxiliary selection from a typological perspective. Thus, studies of auxiliary selection have both stressed the fact that certain recurrent parameters are highly relevant to the description of auxiliary selection, whereas other studies demonstrate significant differences in auxiliary selection systems.
By integrating the synchronic and diachronic levels of linguistic description, the papers in the present volume work towards a framework that explains these contradictory findings. They discuss the role of semantic and syntactic constraints in gradient auxiliary selection, address the question of paradigmaticity of the have-be alternation, and shed light on the mechanisms of the gradual historical change from be- to have-selection.
The volume thus puts forth a row of innovative theoretical and empirical findings from a wide range of typologically diverse European languages that substantially broaden our knowledge about the mechanisms of auxiliary selection systems.
