Autochrome
Regular price $80.00 Save $-80.00The Fascination of Early Color Photography
This impressive book was compiled by the two authors Dr. Maria Reitter-Kollmann and Dr. Alfred Weidinger. The scholars are leading experts on the history of color photography at the Oberösterreichische Landes-Kultur GmbH in Linz. The museum holds one of the most important European collections of historical autochromes.
The exciting collection consists of more than 1.000 photographs by photographic pioneers such as the Archduchess, Margarethe of Austria-Tuscany or from the collection of Hans Frank, the founder of the first Austrian photo museum in Bad Ischl. Photographs by important photographers such as Auguste Lumière are also part of this unique collection.
In the coffee table book Autochrome, the authors present the most beautiful and important pieces from this collection in their full glory. In addition to the wonderful pictures, the book also provides a lot of background knowledge about the technique of this first commercially usable color photography. Text in English and German.

Autocracy in the Provinces
Regular price $85.00 Save $-85.00This book explores the possibilities for rich and varied social, cultural, and political development under the rule of an autocratic state. Seventeenth-century Muscovite society was theocentric, highly traditional, largely illiterate, and deeply dependent on the state in all aspects of life, and therefore does not at all fit Western definitions of a civil society. Nevertheless, Muscovites found interstices in the overarching autocratic culture in which to conduct their own affairs as they wished. It is this arena of early-modern social autonomy that this book investigates, focusing on the nature and limits of autonomous activity among a small but important part of Muscovite society, the provincial gentry.
The author situates Muscovite history within a comparative framework, demonstrating that seventeenth-century Russia was neither backward nor peculiar, but developed its own variant of the concurrent state-building processes of Western European monarchies. The author’s comparisons enable us to understand and appreciate what the gentry of the Muscovite provinces did and thought, illuminating how they typified early-modern petty nobilities, notably in attempting accommodation with rising states and carving out autonomous spaces within and beneath state control.
Autocracy, Capitalism and Revolution in Russia
Regular price $55.00 Save $-55.00The book argues that the Russian revolution cannot be understood without considering the contradictions of autocratic capitalism, which hindered reform and radicalized the labor movement. It integrates structural and agency-based perspectives, showing how social movements both emerged from and shaped these contradictions. The inability of the tsarist regime to allow for moderate worker organizations or adapt to modern industrial capitalism undermined its legitimacy and set the stage for the Bolshevik victory. However, this outcome was not inevitable but one of several possible resolutions to the crises of the old regime. By analyzing the labor movement’s development, its interactions with the state, and its role in the revolution, the study highlights the unique characteristics of Russia’s revolutionary experience and its broader implications for understanding social and political change.

From
women’s mental health specialist and New York
Times contributor Pooja Lakshmin, MD, comes a long-overdue
reckoning with the contradictions of the wellness industry and a
paradigm-shifting program for practicing real self-care that will empower,
uplift, and maybe even start a revolution.
Board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Pooja Lakshmin finds this cultural
embrace of self-care incomplete at best and manipulative at worst. Fixing
your troubles isn’t simple as buying a new day planner or signing
up for a meditation class. These faux self-care practices keep us looking
outward—comparing ourselves with others or striving for a certain
type of perfection. Even worse, they exonerate an oppressive social system
that has betrayed women and minorities.
In Real Self-Care, Lakshmin helps readers understand what a real practice of caring for yourself could—and does—look like. Using case studies from her practice, clinical research, and the down-to-earth style that she's become known for, Lakshmin provides a step-by-step program for real and sustainable change and solace. Packed with actionable strategies to deal with common problems, Real Self-Care is a complete roadmap for women to set boundaries and move past guilt, treat themselves with compassion, get closer to themselves, and assert their power. The result—having ownership over one’s own life— is nothing less than a personal and social revolution.

Autodesk® Revit Basics Training Manual
Regular price $74.95 Save $-74.95“As a newbie to Autodesk’s Revit, I had some difficulty trying to learn the basics of the software on my own. However, when I received Brian Clayton’s Autodesk’s Revit Basics Training Manual, I was overwhelmed with the amount of helpful tips for beginners like me, along with desktop screenshots to help guide me though the drafting process. This training manual truly is a game changer when it comes to giving the reader a clear and very well written guide to the basics of the software.
This training manual provides the basics for understanding the Revit software. The layout of each page is great for visual learners like myself and provides helpful tips and examples. Mr. Clayton provides screenshots of what his screen looks like while working through each example in Revit, allowing the reader to follow along with the instructions perfectly. After reading the entire manual, I feel confident enough to move on to more challenging projects and dive deeper into the software.
I would definitely recommend this manual to beginners who are looking to understand the basics of Revit, as well as intermediate Revit users who want to learn a certain aspect of the software fast. Even after completing all of the examples it provides, I still use this manual, because it is a great tool for reference.”

The reality of invisibility and silence has plagued "unvalued others" in their attempt to make known the cultural significance found in the planning and execution of research. As a result, this book purposes to support the visibility and voice of marginalized scholars who conduct autoethnographic research from a racial, gendered, and critical theoretical framework. This work further supports authentic inquiry as it examines and reexamines culturally diverse epistemologies as a viable and valuable framework for conducting autoethnographic research. Specifically, this work highlights racialized epistemologies as an inescapable factor in auotethnographic research in the context of schools.

These letters are now in the Russian Archive in Leeds (RAL), and are published here for the first time. The book also focuses on memory and history in its purest form, as narrated by witnesses who lived through the most tragic century in Russian history. Their stories involve Grand Dukes, Russian literary and political giants, as well as one of the architects of the Gulag, and show how these lives intertwined. It also sheds new light on the life and works of Chekhov, Gorky, A. Tolstoy, and Bunin.

Autokommunikation

They are complicated, in the sense of not being not ultimately periodic, they may look rather complicated, in the sense that it may not be easy to name the rule by which the sequence is generated, however there exists a rule which generates the sequence. The concept automatic sequences has special applications in algebra, number theory, finite automata and formal languages, combinatorics on words.
The text deals with different aspects of automatic sequences, in particular:

Automation Is a Myth
Regular price $95.00 Save $-95.00For some, automation will usher in a labor-free utopia; for others, it signals a disastrous age-to-come. Yet whether seen as dream or nightmare, automation, argues Munn, is ultimately a fable that rests on a set of triple fictions. There is the myth of full autonomy, claiming that machines will take over production and supplant humans. But far from being self-acting, technical solutions are piecemeal; their support and maintenance reveals the immense human labor behind "autonomous" processes. There is the myth of universal automation, with technologies framed as a desituated force sweeping the globe. But this fiction ignores the social, cultural, and geographical forces that shape technologies at a local level. And, there is the myth of automating everyone, the generic figure of "the human" at the heart of automation claims. But labor is socially stratified and so automation's fallout will be highly uneven, falling heavier on some (immigrants, people of color, women) than others. Munn moves from machine minders in China to warehouse pickers in the United States to explore the ways that new technologies do (and don't) reconfigure labor. Combining this rich array of human stories with insights from media and cultural studies, Munn points to a more nuanced, localized, and racialized understanding of the "future of work."

From the lights that never go out on Broadway to its 24-hour subway system, New York City isn't called "the city that never sleeps" for nothing. Both native New Yorkers and tourists have played hard in Gotham for centuries, lindy hopping in 1930s Harlem, voguing in 1980s Chelsea, and refueling at all-night diners and bars. The slim island at the mouth of the Hudson River is packed with places of leisure and entertainment, but Manhattan's infamously fast pace of change means that many of these beautifully constructed and incredibly ornate buildings have disappeared, and with them a rich and ribald history.
Yet with David Freeland as a guide, it's possible to uncover skeletons of New York's lost monuments to its nightlife. With a keen eye for architectural detail, Freeland opens doors, climbs onto rooftops, and gazes down alleyways to reveal several of the remaining hidden gems of Manhattan's nineteenth- and twentieth-century entertainment industry. From the Atlantic Garden German beer hall in present-day Chinatown to the city's first motion picture studio—Union Square's American Mutoscope and Biograph Company—to the Lincoln Theater in Harlem, Freeland situates each building within its historical and social context, bringing to life an old New York that took its diversions seriously. Freeland reminds us that the buildings that serve as architectural guideposts to yesteryear's recreations cannot be re-created—once destroyed they are gone forever. With condominiums and big box stores spreading over city blocks like wildfires, more and more of the Big Apple's legendary houses of mirth are being lost. By excavating the city's cultural history, this delightful book unearths some of the many mysteries that lurk around the corner and lets readers see the city in a whole new light.
