What is the future of Blackness? Obsidian Theatre presents twenty-one versions of it.

In 2021, Obsidian Theatre engaged twenty-one writers to create twenty-one new stories about imagined Black futures. Twenty-one to celebrate Obsidian’s twenty-first anniversary in 2021. Each playwright was tasked with scripting a ten-minute monodrama in response to the question “What is the future of Blackness?” To counter the intense early-pandemic isolation and the trauma of witnessing heightened violence toward Black bodies, Obsidian’s goal was to give as many opportunities to as many diverse Black artists as possible and to bring new voices together from both theatre and film. It was a grand experiment to create a rich tapestry of possibilities and to uplift Black artists in the process.

A radical offering in unprecedented times, newly appointed Obsidian artistic director Mumbi Tindyebwa Otu’s curatorial aim was joyful, aspirational, and empowering: come together in this moment and create something communal, unapologetically Black, and with the Black gaze at its centre—art as the architecture for creating those futures.

Dealing with color is a complex topic: influenced by standards, fashions, and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition, and personal preferences. Most color classification systems available today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular color?

Building on the success of the first edition, Katrin Trautwein presents a revised selection of 225 colors: new ones that develop a special beauty in the LED-light replaced some previous colors.

Each color is presented with a handmade paint sample. Information on each color’s composition and origin is provided, and the features that distinguish it for architecture and design work are described.

23 Shades of Black is socially conscious crime fiction. It takes place in New York City in the early 1980s, i.e., the Reagan years, and was written partly in response to the reactionary discourse of the time, when the current thirty-year assault on the rights of working people began in earnest, and the divide between rich and poor deepened with the blessing of the political and corporate elites. But it is not a political tract, it’s a kick-ass novel that was nominated for the Edgar and the Anthony Awards, and made Booklist’s Best First Mysteries of the Year.

The heroine, Filomena Buscarsela, is an immigrant who experienced tremendous poverty and injustice in her native Ecuador, and who grew up determined to devote her life to helping others. Filomena is mistreated and betrayed by her fellow officers, which leads her to pursue a case independently in the hopes of being promoted to detective for the Rape Crisis Unit.

Along the way, she is required to enforce unjust drug laws that she disagrees with, and to betray her own community (which ostracizes her as a result) in an undercover operation to round up undocumented immigrants. Several scenes are set in the East Village art and punk rock scene of the time, and the murder case eventually turns into an investigation of corporate environmental crime from a working class perspective that is all-too-rare in the genre.

And yet this thing is damn funny, too.

The most clearly identifiable and popular form of Japanese hip-hop, “ghetto” or “gangsta” music has much in common with its corresponding American subgenres, including its portrayal of life on the margins, confrontational style, and aspirational “rags-to-riches” narratives. Contrary to depictions of an ethnically and economically homogeneous Japan, gangsta J-hop gives voice to the suffering, deprivation, and social exclusion experienced by many modern Japanese. 24 Bars to Kill offers a fascinating ethnographic account of this music as well as the subculture around it, showing how gangsta hip-hop arises from widespread dissatisfaction and malaise.

Although Concrete Art comes across as very precise, it is only possible to say approximately when the name was born. In his manifesto of the same name, Theo van Doesburg officially introduced the term to art theory in 1930. But the Dutch artist, architect and theorist is said to have conceived it for the first time and applied it to his own works as early as 1924. 100 years later, despite all the uncertainty, this anniversary is a fitting opportunity to question today’s generation of young artists with a stylistic affinity to the movement in detail about their relationship to Concrete Art. What influence have the beginnings of the art movement had on their own visual work? Are its principles still relevant today? And does the same apply to the name? Their statements – in addition to a brief historical overview of the origins of Concrete Art – are a central element of this publication.
