Breonna Taylor, Alberta Spruill, Rekia Boyd, Shantel Davis, Shelly Frey, Kayla Moore, Kyam Livingston, Miriam Carey, Michelle Cusseaux, and Tanisha Anderson are among the many lives that should have been. 

#SayHerName provides an analytical framework for understanding Black women's susceptibility to police brutality and state-sanctioned violence, and it explains how—through black feminist storytelling and ritual—we can effectively mobilize various communities and empower them to advocate for racial justice.

Johann Gottfried Herder ist vielfach bis heute Symbolfigur für die Überwindung "der" Rhetorik im Sturm und Drang. Doch diesem Befund widerspricht nicht nur Herders umfangreiche Redepraxis, sondern auch seine bisher kaum beachtete Aneignung von Rhetorik und sein fast unbekannter Einspruch gegen Kants Verurteilung der Disziplin. Unter Berücksichtigung des Gesamtwerks und zahlreicher handschriftlicher Quellen wird hier deshalb erstmals auf breiter Basis Herders umfangreiche Auseinandersetzung mit der antiken und zeitgenössischen Rhetorik aufgearbeitet und seine Rhetorikrezeption in Beziehung zu den Rhetorikkonzepten seines Umfeldes gesetzt. So wird ein komplexes Ineinander von Kritik, Anwendung und Transformation rhetorischen Theorie- und Praxiswissens in Herders Lebenswerk sichtbar.

Die interdisziplinär angelegte Untersuchung folgt Herders Thematisierung und struktureller Aufnahme verschiedener Rhetorikformen im pädagogischen, theologisch-homiletischen, philosophischen, politischen und literarischen Diskurs und zeigt die Unterschiedlichkeit der situativen und systematischen Konnotationen des Rhetorikbegriffes im historischen Zusammenhang. The Elizabethan popular audience had a natural love of clowning, slapstick and the mayhem that was released when the rules of society were relaxed, broken or subverted. A play set on Midsummer Night and structured as a dream was going to be fun and full of the resonances associated with a festal day that had age old overtones of love, marriage, misrule and jolllity. Midsummer was traditionally celebrated with dancing and feasting and always involved secret assignations in the woods later when it was dark. Indeed, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play with a bit of everything – magic, moonlight, mayhem, love’s mad entanglements, fairies, mistakes, mechanicals as mummers, all set in the spookiness of the woods at midnight - and all of it provoking laughter.

The business of comedy was more important and serious than simply raising a laugh. It has always served a much graver purpose than mere humorous entertainment, but has also been regarded by religious, moral and cultural guardians as a lesser form than tragedy and a morally questionable one. In a world where society was strictly stratified even the arts had hierarchies. In painting devotional studies (Annunciations, Nativities, Crucifixions) were thought to be the highest endeavour, and historical subjects were thought superior to landscape and portraiture. Grotesque topics of common life (card-playing, village dances, tavern scenes) were thought of as very low art. In literature the epic poem, tragic drama, religious poetry, history plays, even lyrics and love verses were thought of as higher forms than mere comedy. Though the plays of Terence and Plautus were studied, translated and performed by schoolboys and undergraduates, and the satires of Juvenal and Horace were similarly on educational syllabuses, comedy was regarded with suspicion. It was thought to be a too vulgar form, too associated with the bourgeoisie and the commoners, too concerned with trickery, knavery and sex.

 It would not be amiss to re-title the play A Midsummer Night’s Nightmare, for, though matters in Athens are complicated and tense enough, the escape to the woods releases all manner of dark things and makes the entanglements even worse. The piece can be acted in two ways. The traditional approach has been to display it as a fast-moving, action-packed, farcical romp, a carnival of silliness; a light-hearted celebration of human foolishness, full of mistakes and misperceptions, nonsense and laughter, but turning out all right in the end, and not to be taken seriously as it is only a playful entertainment. It may also be seen as a play where oppressiveness, manipulation, misplaced love, hatred and menace dominate and the inconstancy of the human heart is disturbingly exposed. Hermia escapes from Egeus’ dictatorial threats only to find herself (and her complacent assumption of happiness to come in exile) at the mercy of forces she cannot control and does not understand. What happens in the woods is unsettling and represents the more frightening fears that lurk in the psyche and emerge in dreams. It is the woods that provoke the dream/nightmare element.

The present volume grew out of the 30th International LAUD Symposium, held on April 19–22, 2004 at the University of Koblenz-Landau in Landau, Germany. The conference, "Empowerment through Language", was centrally concerned with the concept of power and/or empowerment as observed in the status and use of language(s) and their speakers in bilingual and multilingual communities. The book discusses the theoretical issues inherent in the relation between language and power, the empowerment strategies involved in language policy and language planning situations, and the issue of language endangerment in Africa, i.e., the fate of minority languages and their speakers and the sociopolitical factors perpetuating their exclusion from access to knowledge and skills.

The volume constitutes a collection of papers by prominent linguists from many countries who explore the exciting interdisciplinary area of language, power, and linguistic empowerment. Broadly speaking, the papers focus on the theoretical and sociolinguistic problems related to the role of power in language policy and language planning situations in multilingual settings, language choices, code switches, and associated topics. Thus, the aim of the volume is to open up language policy and language planning issues as observed in multilingual contexts (nations, institutions, other settings, and domains) to the wider community of critical sociolinguistics by concentrating on the relationship between language and power. More particularly, it offers a decidedly sociolinguistic perspective to the study of language and power, which likewise has been tackled from other perspectives in the areas of sociology and political science. This interdisciplinary relationship is important both for linguistics and for the sociology of language. In this way, the book is an important contribution to general linguistics, sociolinguistics, minority issues in multilingual settings as well as the social sciences.

In honor of his upcoming 80th birthday (2006) , Fishman's colleagues and former students are preparing five volumes by him or about him, this being one of them.

Angela Carter is best known for her novels, short fiction and journalism, but she also produced a substantial body of writing for media other than the printed page, including five radio plays, two film adaptations, an original television documentary and a number of unrealised scripts for stage and screen. Despite increasing academic interest in Carter's work, these dramatic writings have largely been ignored. In this book, Charlotte Crofts redresses this lack of critical attention by examining Carter's dramatic writings together for the first time (including two unpublished works), giving them a more central position in the Carter canon.

Divided into three sections on radio, film and television, the book's interdisciplinary approach is underpinned by reference to exclusive interviews with the directors and producers with whom Carter collaborated, giving a unique insight into processes of adaptation and the technologies of media production. The author demonstrates how, far from being an aberration from her real vocation as a writer of fiction, Carter's writing for radio, film and television is an extension of her self-professed demythologising practice.

Bajohr's study offers a major contribution to our understanding of this process in that it focusses on one of its most important aspects, namely the gradual exclusion of Jews from economic life in Hamburg, one of the largest centers of Jewish life in Europe and one in which many of them had been part of the Hanseatic patriciate before 1933. The sad conclusion of this study is that it was not necessarily antisemitism that motivated "ordinary burghers" but unrestrained greed that led them to betray their former co-citizens.

The Victorian private solider was a despised figure. A working man had to be desperate indeed to take the Queen’s shilling. Yet in the first sixteen months of the Great War two and a half million men from the UK and many more from the empire, flocked to the colours – without any form of legal compulsion. There had never been a volunteer army like it.

What was in the air of England in the generation or so before 1914 to bring about such collective exultation? How did it come about that, in a society which – in oft-proclaimed contrast to Germany – rejected conscription and prided itself on having no taint of militarism, men could be induced to volunteer in such numbers? The nation’s general state of mind, system of values and set of attitudes derived largely from the upper middle class, which had emerged and become dominant during the nineteenth century. The book examines the phenomenon of 1914 and the views held by people of that class, since it was under their leadership that the country went to war.

Die Studie widmet sich den volkssprachlichen Versübertragungen der Mariensequenz Ave praeclara maris stella Hermanns von Reichenau. Die Texte werden vollständig in Neueditionen oder Ersteditionen nach der Gesamtüberlieferung vorgelegt und erscheinen überwiegend erstmals im Druck. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht der Transformationsbegriff, der translationswissenschaftlich (Skopostheorie), poetologisch (Hypertextualität) und kulturwissenschaftlich Anwendung findet. Ausgehend von der jeweiligen (formal-stilistischen, semantischen) Äquivalenzrelation zwischen lateinischer Vorlage und volkssprachlicher Übertragung, wird das poetische Profil der volkssprachlichen Texte auf der Grundlage der Hypertextualitätstheorie Gérard Genettes erfasst und die Übertragungen systematisiert. Neben der stilistischen Ebene spielt im Transformationsprozess das Marienbild der lateinischen Sequenz eine wichtige Rolle, das im Wesentlichen auf der Vorstellung der Maria mediatrix beruht und das in der Volkssprache zum Teil erheblich modifiziert wird: Marias Verhältnis zur Trinität, ihre heilsgeschichtliche Funktion und die Frage, ob sie in die Nähe oder in Distanz zu den Menschen gesetzt wird, unterscheiden sich teils markant von der lateinischen Sequenz. Möglichen Gebrauchszusammenhängen und der Frage nach der jeweiligen Liturgizität der volkssprachlichen Texte wird textimmanent sowie anhand der Überlieferungskontexte nachgegangen. Die Studie versucht am Beispiel des Ave praeclara die Facetten des Übertragungsprozesses im Wechselspiel von Liturgie und Volkssprache abzubilden und mit Hilfe der entwickelten Systematik Anknüpfungspunkte für die mediävistische Übersetzungsforschung zu bieten.

Die Moskauer Sammelhandschrift aus dem Straßburger Reuerinnenkloster St. Magdalena (Moskau, Russische Staatsbibliothek, F. 68, Nr. 446) gehört zu den markantesten mittelalterlichen deutschen Handschriften in russischen Bibliotheken und bietet wichtige Zeugnisse weiblicher Frömmigkeit aus dem späten Mittelalter: eine Katharinenlegende, eine Barbaralegende (Schreiberin Nonne Katharina Ingolt, 1477) und die Traktate des elsässischen Dominikaners Johannes Kreutzer (um 1424 - 1468) Der geistliche Mai, Die geistliche Ernte und Herbstmost I und II, die der Unterweisung der ‚Bräute Christi' und dem Thema der mystischen Brautschaft gewidmet sind. Diese Texte sind von großem literarischem Interesse und waren bisher unediert und unerforscht. Die Edition wird durch Untersuchungen zum Befund und zur Geschichte der Handschrift eingeleitet und durch einen Kommentar und ein Glossar erschlossen. Im Anhang werden Textstellen aus den Traktaten Kreutzers nach der Parallelüberlieferung ediert. Die auf Frauen zugeschnittenen Themen der beiden Teile der Handschrift - die Legenden weiblicher Heiligen und die Traktate über die mystische Brautschaft - ergänzen einander und bieten einen wichtigen Einblick in die literarischen Interessen altgläubiger Straßburger Klosterfrauen in den Jahren vor der Reformation.

Although the government and official press describes them as "brothers" in a united Nile Valley, recent political developments in Egypt have underscored the precarious legal status of Sudanese in Cairo. Neither citizens nor foreigners, they are in an uncertain position, created in part through an unusual ethnic discourse which does not draw principally on obvious characteristics of difference. This rich ethnographic study shows instead that Sudanese ethnic identity is created from deeply held social values, especially those concerning gender and propriety, shared by Sudanese and Egyptian communities. The resulting ethnic identity is ambiguous and flexible, allowing Sudanese to voice their frustrations and make claims for their own uniqueness while acknowledging the identity that they share with the dominant Egyptian community.

Few parts of the Old Testament are more challenging to read than the prophets. Not only are so-called messianic passages relatively rare, but apart from Jonah, these books seem to present a message that is particularly negative, if not xenophobic, when it comes to the 'nations.'

Daniel Timmer contends that this impression is not only mistaken but diametrically opposed to the books' message. Following the direction established by God's foundational promise to Abram in Genesis 12, Timmer examines the presentation of the nations in the Latter Prophets in their original contexts, through the New Testament and into the church's contemporary mission. He explains how the prophets' negative presentations of the nations fit into God's purpose to redeem people from every tribe and tongue, he explores the radical significance of the prophets' frequent predictions that non-Israelites will become integral members of God's chosen people.

This study also deals with practical issues, including the place of ethnicity and nationality in Christian identity and the church's fraught relationships with secular and political power structures.

Faith groups are already important in the regeneration of communities, and are often more committed and have long-term involvement. However, despite government directives to involve faith communities in regeneration and renewal, official agencies lack understanding about faith communities and their diversity, and conflicts arise between secular liberal views and those of religious groups.

The concept of Heimat with its seemingly pre- or anti-modern connotations of rootedness in a place of origin is central to a critical understanding of German history and culture. Over the course of the past fifteen years, scholars across a range of disciplines have found new ways to examine the changing notions of Heimat – its multifaceted cultural, literary, and visual history, its gendered connotations, and its national and ideological appropriations.
This anthology is the first to examine cultural manifestations of Heimat by giving special consideration to issues of memory and space. The contributions to this volume challenge static notions of place often associated with Heimat. Instead, they explore the social and cultural production of places of belonging as they emerge in literary and visual narratives ranging from 1800 to 2000 and beyond.
Although the anthology includes historical perspectives on Heimat, its overall objective is not to trace its cultural or literary history, but to place this complex term into new conceptual contexts. Die »Historia septem sapientum« ist die verbreiteste Version der Rahmenerzählung der "Sieben weisen Meister", die zu den erfolgreichsten Stoffen der Weltliteratur gehört. Die »Historia« selbst ist im ersten Drittel des 14. Jahrhunderts in lateinischer Sprache entstanden und Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts ins Deutsche und mit dem Buchdruck in beinahe alle europäischen Volkssprachen übersetzt worden. Die bisher einzige Untersuchung zur Überlieferung der allen diesen Übersetzungen zugrundeliegenden lateinischen »Historia« stammt aus dem Jahr 1904 und kennt 33 Handschriften; die bisher einzige Edition dieses Textes stammt aus dem Jahr 1889 und gibt lediglich den Text der ältesten Handschrift unvollständig wieder. Die vorliegenden Bände bieten nun in einem ersten Teil grundlegende Informationen zur Lokalisierung und Datierung der »Historia«, zu 72 Handschriften und 11 Drucken und zu deren überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen. Der zweite Teil bietet textgeschichtliche Editionen der drei Hauptfassungen nach dem Leithandschriftenprinzip und mit den Varianten der meisten zugehörigen Handschriften. In einem Anmerkungsteil werden schließlich die Texteingriffe erläutert sowie die für das Textverständnis wichtigen Nachweise von Similien aus der Bibel und der Erzählsammlung der »Gesta Romanorum«, die meist zusammen mit der »Historia« überliefert werden, erbracht. Mit dieser Ausgabe ist die Grundlage für weiterführende literarhistorische Fragestellungen zum Text und seinen zahlreichen Übersetzungen geschaffen.

Zwischen der späten Weimarer Republik und der frühen Bundesrepublik wurde der Begriff ›Humanismus‹ in der Publizistik so oft verwendet wie nie zuvor. Intellektuelle aus unterschiedlichen Milieus verstehen den Zusammenbruch der Weimarer Demokratie und den Nationalsozialismus nicht allein als politisch-soziale Krise, sondern als Krise der Kultur. Die Berufung auf den Humanismus dient dabei oft als eine Art ›Bollwerk‹ gegen den ›Biologismus‹ und den als ›Nihilismus‹ kritisierten Werterelativismus der Moderne. Zugleich wird der klassisch-idealistische Humanismus selbst als krisenhaft und revisionsbedürftig angesehen, woraus sich die Forderung nach einem neuen Humanismus ergibt.

Lessings Übersetzungswerk ‑ ca. 7.000 Druckseiten ‑ umfasst mehr als vierzig Titel, fast ebenso viele Autoren und diverse Gattungen. Lessing übersetzt aus dem Lateinischen, Italienischen, Französischen, Englischen und Spanischen.

Unter seiner Federführung wird die Übersetzungsfrage in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts erstmals Gegenstand der deutschen Literaturkritik; Lessing ist Leitfigur einer Epoche, in der die deutsche Literatur zu den europäischen Nachbarliteraturen aufschließt. Seine Bedeutung als Übersetzer ist gleichwohl bisher nur selten untersucht worden, ein Grund mag die noch immer beklagenswerte Editionslage sein.

Der vorliegende Band ergänzt die Beiträge einer Wolfenbütteler Tagung aus dem Herbst 2007 um zwei weitere Aufsätze. Dazu werden relevante Texte römischer Schriftsteller vor dem Hintergrund ihres kommunikativen und literarischen Kontextes und der politischen Entwicklungen jeweils separat analysiert. Christine Kleiter analyzes this work in its exceptional position as one of the first printed and illustrated natural history treatises. She shows how the text and images pursue the claim to systematically document and catalog knowledge. In doing so, she compares Belon’s work with that of other naturalists, such as Conrad Gessner and Ulisse Aldrovandi. It becomes clear that Belon drew on a variety of sources - from living and dead animals to specimens and drawings - and depicted some animals that had never been seen or described before in Europe. Despite being one of Canada's most widely published, and most richly awarded writers, Austin Clarke (1934–2016) is not a household name. This collection addresses Clarke's marginalization in Canadian literature by demonstrating that his writing on Black diasporic life and the immigrant experience is a foundational, if untold, part of the story of CanLit.


Novelist, short-story writer, poet, and essayist, Clarke was born in Barbados, moved to Canada in 1955 and went on to establish Black Studies programs at a number of universities in America. He returned to Canada and became one of Canadian literature’s most prolific authors and a public voice for Black people in Canada. Among his best-known works are the Giller Award–winning The Polished Hoe (2002) and his memoir ‘Membering (2015).


This collection of essays from colleagues, scholars, friends, and fellow writers addresses Clarke's work in all its richness and complexity in order to understand how Clarke's legacy continues to transform Canadian writing. In the mid-1970s, a long wave of contentious radicalism swept through Italy. ‘Proletarian youth’, ‘metropolitan Indians’, ‘the area of Autonomy’: a shifting galaxy of groups and movements practised new forms of activism. Factories and universities were occupied; rent and utility payments were withheld; neo-Fascists and drug pushers were attacked on sight.

The movements were at once creative and brutal, intransigent and playful. A particular target for mockery was the parliamentary Left, and above all the Italian Communist Party (PCI). An earlier wave of radical activism had culminated in the Hot Autumn of 1969; then, the PCI had managed to ‘ride the tiger’ of industrial militancy, emerging with its credibility enhanced. Now, however, the PCI was committed to compromise with the ruling Christian Democrats. The second cycle of contention thus ended in a hostile engagement: rather than adopt their policies, the PCI labelled the movements Fascists, criminals and hooligans. By the end of 1977 the movements were broken, while the PCI had moved sharply to the Right. The main beneficiaries were left-wing ‘armed struggle’ groups such as the Red Brigades.

Building on Sidney Tarrow’s ‘cycle of contention’ model and drawing on a wide range of Italian materials, Phil Edwards has told the story of a unique and fascinating group of political movements, and of their disastrous engagement with the mainstream Left. Disasters have a widescale impact with drastic consequences on human lives, especially those who are marginalised by the wider society. Proposing a fresh approach towards analysing the politics of disasters, climate change and climate justice, 'Natural’ Disasters and Everyday Lives explores the relationship between citizens, the State and the society in the context of the Global South’s highly underdeveloped areas.

Drawing on both theoretical frameworks and lived experience, this is the first book to document the lives of people affected by floods in the Barak Valley, a flood prone area in Southern Assam, which is also one of the most underdeveloped regions of South Asia. Narrating the fear and perils of living in an underdeveloped area in India during natural disasters, Suddhabrata Deb Roy draws from interviews conducted in Silchar, the largest and most developed urban settlement in the Barak Valley, during the floods of 2022 – the worst flood in the region in over 100 years – and during 2024 to expose the processes through which the people of the region suffer from developmental negligence and socio-political apathy. Examining the intersections of natural disasters and marginality, the author relates Marx’s ideas on humanism, nature, alienation and economic development to ideas around climate justice, marginalisation and urbanisation, taking into context the contradictions posed by factors such as class, caste, gender and race in highly underdeveloped regions in India.

Recognising that these issues are addressed quite differently in the Global North, Deb Roy connects flooding in northeastern India to the context of the broader politics surrounding climate change and climate justice in the Global South, making this book important and powerful reading for countering today’s climate emergency.

In a broad and detailed study Delgado selects six case studies which map out alternative readings of a nation’s theatrical innovation through the twentieth century: muse and mentor to Federico Garcia Lorca, Margarita Xirgu; theatrical innovator and influence on Orson Welles, Enrique Rambal; tragedienne Maria Casares feted by George Craig Camus, Genet and Cocteau; actress, producer and director Nuria Espert; international director Lluis Pasqual and Catalan performance company La Cubana.

This in-depth study explores the motivations for 'planned' teenage pregnancy in England. The findings have important implications for the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy and the increasing political agenda on young people and health.

The report is based on 51 in-depth interviews, undertaken among teenagers in six relatively disadvantaged locations who reported their pregnancy as 'planned' (41 women and 10 men). Key findings include:·

Young women's childhood and background act as contributing factors to 'planning' a pregnancy.
