Die historisch-semantische Studie untersucht Otto von Bismarcks Verwendung des Terminus Volk und seiner Synonyme wie Nation oder Stamm und fragt, in welchen Argumentationsmustern Bismarck solche Ausdrücke typischerweise zur Durchsetzung seiner politischen Intentionen einsetzt.
Für die Analyse werden methodisch zwei Ansätze ‑ ein semasiologisch-onomasiologisch orientierter textlexikografischer und ein argumentationstheoretischer Ansatz ‑ miteinander verknüpft. So werden nicht nur die linguistische Ebene des Wortes, sondern auch jene der Textpassage und des Textes einbezogen. Anhand der semasiologisch-onomasiologischen Methode wird analysiert, was Volk in Bismarcks Sprachgebrauch bedeutet. Zur Vertiefung von pragmatischen Fragestellungen werden wiederkehrende Argumentationsmuster (Topoi) in Textpassagen unterschiedlicher Textsorten und Entstehungszeiten herausgearbeitet, in denen Volk-Ausdrücke vorkommen. Bismarck gebraucht bestimmte wiederkehrende Argumentationsmuster mit jeweils bestimmten Volk-Ausdrücken und ein „offenes System“ von Volk-Ausdrücken, um ‑ oft unter Verwendung von Topoi ‑ in Abhängigkeit von Zeit, Situation, Textsorte und Adressat bestimmte politische Ziele durchzusetzen bzw. zu legitimieren.

Duplicity and deception were essential ingredients in a comedy, and though they were not morally acceptable they reflect what happened in real life; the putting of personal obsession and private will before social and Christian responsibilities. But here, the excess of evil is there from the start and simply increases. There is little light-heartedness. It is all one sustained bitter snarl about humanity’s corruption. And the questions remain; should they be laughing at any of it and how can they not laugh at such a mad mixture of mistakes, such crass stupidity and such evil greed?

The fox is a creature of the night, a predator, a thief. He is a border raider, crossing from wild nature into man’s domestic domain. Nightstalker, elusive, devious, he is embedded deep in the European psyche as a trickster and deceiver. This persona goes back to ancient Greek times when the various fox fables of Aesop mix with other beast tales. The linking of humans to animal characteristics is part of the language: snake in the grass, wolf in sheep’s clothing, brave as a lion, timid as a mouse, busy as a bee, slimy toad, whoreson dog. At the most practical level, for a world almost entirely rural, he is the enemy of farmers and shepherds and individual poor households rearing just a few chickens; the feared killer who could annihilate a henhouse or ravage a warren. He was thus a food burglar, stealing vital nourishment before it could be put on the table and as such a threat to the family’s economy and perhaps even a threat to its survival.

Tragedy is as old as human misery and comedy is its not-quite-identical twin, for laughter is as old as tears. One mask may smile, the other cry, but the faces are similar and in many respects so are the two genres, though their outcomes are different. Man’s folly, his potential for evil, his potential for good, his ability to misunderstand the true values of life are common to both forms. One achieves correction of mistakes through disaster, pain, misery, the other through tears turning to laughter as folly is mocked and humiliated and order is restored.

Beteiligt sind Kolleg*innen mit Forschungsschwerpunkten in Antike, Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit. Drei Kolleg*innen mit Expertise im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert haben die Beiträge kommentiert und aus ihrer Perspektive eingeordnet. Der Band verdankt sich einer Vortragsreihe, in der Bielefelder Kolleg*innen sich anlässlich der Einrichtung des Profilbereichs ‚Vormoderne‘ an der Universität Bielefeld zu dem Konzept Stellung bezogen. Im Ergebnis zeigen die Beiträge, dass ein differenziertes Bild der Gesellschaft der Gegenwart ganz wesentlich in ihrer Bezogenheit zur Vormoderne gewinnen lässt.

This book aims to study the perception of crises in Hittite Anatolia (1650–1180 BCE) from different perspectives: the one of the Hittites, the one of the neighboring polities, and ours as historians. Two concepts will be discussed in the introduction of the book: crisis and (a)synchronicity. The book has the goal to show – considering the written sources available from the Hittite kingdom – that in some cases, the perception of a crisis is asynchronic even in the same temporal frame. Regarding our perspective as historian, asynchronicity is at work since the temporal frame are far apart, yet if we rely on and correctly interpret the sources available to us, it becomes clear that we might perceive a crisis in Hittite Anatolia more synchronically than expected. Finally, even the perception of the Hittites can be both asynchronic and synchronic, since it is possible that they misinterpreted the signs of an actual crisis and perceived it only after the crisis took place or even after it ended. The book will consider four case-studies that are considered key moments in Hittite history. The final goal is to re-define crises in Hittite Anatolia considering the multi-temporality of the (a)synchronic perception of crises.

Through the exploration of male fertility and lifestyle factors and their modification we examine the growth of healthism around infertility, the role of neoliberalism within this and how this intersects with masculinity. Using a new notion of liquid masculinity, we explore the fluid nature of societal and personal perspectives on the male infertility experience. In doing so we offer new insights into the now accepted idea that ‘sperm’ is malleable and that fertility controllable through personal choices, despite their being limited scientific evidence for such claims.
