In 1971, when Greg Shepherd was in his early twenties, he left New Jersey and joined the Koko An Zendo community in Hawaii. What began as a quest for enlightenment became Greg's confrontation with his own inner demons: his need for approval, his distrust of authority, and his ego-driven fixation on achieving the profound spiritual breakthrough of kensho ("the Big K"). Later, in Japan, he struggled with prejudice and cultural rigidity and found his deeper meditations leading to actual panic attacks over fear of losing himself. Ultimately, he broke with Zen and his teachers to pursue a career in music.

It is argued that relations between the two sides were often strained, indeed, to the extent that the most ‘special’ elements of the relationship, that of intelligence and nuclear co-operation, were suspended. Yet, the relationship also witnessed considerable co-operation. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in eclipse as the preeminent institution promoting international economic and financial stability. Successful reform of the IMF must engage the full spectrum of its members. The IMF should not focus primarily on its low-income members and the challenges of global poverty nor should it focus exclusively on international financial crises affecting a small group of vulnerable emerging-market economies. Instead, it must be engaged with each of its members potentially on the full range of their economic and financial policies and play a central role in shaping global economic performance.

This important new book strongly argues that systemically important countries, starting with the Group of Seven, must support the IMF in this role. Its recommendations cover all key aspects of IMF responsibilities and operations: (1) In the crucial area of governance, the membership of the IMF should promptly address the reallocation of IMF shares (voting power) and the reallocation of chairs (representation on the IMF executive board), and it is time to discard the old conventions and to adopt a merit-based approach to the choice of the IMF's leadership; (2) mechanisms should be put in place to increase the IMF's leverage over systemically important members, and the IMF must act more forcefully in discharging its responsibility to exercise firm surveillance over members' exchange rate policies; (3) the Fund's central role in external financial crises should be reaffirmed; (4) the IMF should narrow and refocus its involvement with its low-income members; (5) the IMF's activities should be updated with respect to members' capital account policies and financial sectors; and (6) the IMF should put in place procedures for borrowing from the market to guard against the possibility that it will not receive timely increases in its quota resources.

Gerald Augustus Archambeau was born in Jamaica in 1933. Raised in Kingston by his three aunts, he was sent to Canada in 1947 to join his mother and stepfather in Montreal. He trained in the plumbing and steam-fitting trade, but at age eighteen decided to join the railway as a passenger car porter. He worked for Canadian Pacific and Canadian National until the 1960s, when declining passenger rail traffic and the ascendence of air travel caused him to switch to a career with a major Canadian airline in Toronto.

After his retirement from the airline, Gerald and his wife, Marion, settled in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Interactive collaborative decision processes appear as better drivers of strategic adaptation. The research presented here is developed from analyses of extensive European and North American datasets (1995-2019) spanning periods of economic expansion, recession, and recovery and explores how firms manage in a world with extreme exposures and how their failure and success affect the distribution of financial returns. Refined analyses show how left-skewed returns are associated with negative risk-return relations where high-performers generate better average returns at lower levels of risk. These results can also derive from firms with heterogeneous adaptive capabilities, which we model and use in computational simulations to show how it produces negatively skewed performance distributions and inverse risk-return outcomes.;

How did premodern Muslim scholars of rhetoric and exegesis interpret ambiguous verses in the Koran, particularly those suggesting anthropomorphism? This book explores how the rhetorical device tawriya “double entendre” came to serve as a hermeneutical tool for resolving or accommodating ambiguity in the sacred text. Focusing on verses traditionally considered ambiguous (mutašābihāt) and long debated by interpreters, the study distinguishes between those not related to the nature of God and those concerning divine attributes. Through a detailed analysis of premodern exegetical and theological sources, supported by an in-depth study of rhetorical treatises, it traces the evolution of exegetical and rhetorical thought. It demonstrates how tawriya was used to reconcile doctrinal concerns and to legitimise textual ambiguity. Ultimately, the study argues that tawriya reveals the centrality of the reader’s role in constructing meaning, shedding light on the dynamic relationship between rhetoric, theology, and hermeneutics in Islamic intellectual history and Koranic exegesis. This work is relevant for scholars of Islamic studies, rhetoric, and religious hermeneutics.

Book I of Aristotle's De partibus animalium, independent of the other three books, is a general introduction to Aristotle's biological work. However, the great importance of this text and the attention paid to its content by scholars is in sharp contrast to its neglect in terms of textual editing: previous editions have dealt with only a fraction of the tradition.

This book therefore begins with the recensio of the manuscript tradition that has come down to us, reconstructing the genealogy of some 50 Greek manuscripts, an Arabic translation from the 9th century, as well as two medieval and two renaissance Latin translations. In addition, the independent textual witnesses ― 25 Greek codices, the Arabic and the two medieval Latin translations ― allow the text of two lost late antique copies, the Hyparchetypes α and β, to be reconstructed. Their readings, the variants, are decisive for the constitution of the text.
