Die zeitliche Dimension von Kulturgeschichte wurde lange Zeit durch die Schilderungen der Bibel, ergänzt um die Darstellung klassischer Autoren bestimmt. Mit dem frühneuzeitlichen Aufkommen der Naturwissenschaften bildete sich allmählich ein alternatives Paradigma heraus, das religiöse Gewissheiten in Frage stellte und geistige und geistliche Autoritäten herausforderte. Im Rahmen dieser weltanschaulichen Auseinandersetzung erhofften sich beide Seiten Unterstützung durch die Erkenntnisse der sich zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ausbildenden Altertumswissenschaften. Ihre Vertreter waren sowohl durch die Verfahren des kritischen Quellenstudiums geprägt wie auch durch die Anwendung naturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungsmethoden.

Dabei verlief die Entwicklung von einer „biblischen Chronologie" hin zu naturwissenschaftlich und durch historische Belege gesicherten Geschichtsschreibung keineswegs linear und einseitig. Gerade aufgrund der doppelten Prägung früher Altertumswissenschaftler durch religiöse Weltbilder und die Schulung in (natur-)wissenschaftlichem Denken, entstanden immer neue Vorstellungen und Konzepte über das Alter menschlicher Kultur.

Der Band setzt sich in mehreren wissenschaftshistorischen Fallstudien mit diesen Entwicklungen auseinander.

From the birth of Berlin’s railway network to the time when the bombs of the Second World War and the concrete slabs of the Wall changed the city forever, the Prussian and later German capital counted eight major railway stations. These were beacons in the city: impressive monuments, magnificently built for the bygone rituals of arrival and departure, yet tightly woven into a distinct part of town.

Railway stations are magical, meaningful places, allowing for escape as well as promise, nostalgia as well as novelty. They process all sorts of people, from well-to-do business types to unfortunates forced to live on the fringes of society. There is a nervous energy around them, created by those looking forward to their journey, others trying to get oriented in a place that is new to them, and some facing the drudgery of yet another commute.

And if pre-World War 2 Berlin was anything, it was energetic. Building an adequate transport infrastructure for Europe’s fastest-growing city proved to be a continuous challenge that required flexibility and adaptation and touched the city in ways that can still be seen today. This is the history of Berlin’s railway stations, the people that used them, and the way the city was shaped by them.

Die Kommentierung erläutert umfassend und aktuell das gesamte Statusrecht des Bundes- und Landtagsabgeordneten sowie der in Deutschland gewählten Abgeordneten des Europäischen Parlaments. Systematische Grundlage ist das Abgeordnetengesetz des Bundes, dem das Landesrecht vielfach noch entspricht. Das Europaabgeordnetengesetz und die Abgeordnetengesetze der Länder sind synoptisch gegenübergestellt und werden jeweils dann eingehender betrachtet, wenn Abweichungen dies nahe legen.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist das Recht der Fraktionen, soweit es seine Grundlage in den Abgeordnetengesetzen oder - wie bei einigen Bundesländern der Fall - in besonderen Fraktionsgesetzen hat. Es fragt danach, wie Literatur subversiv gestaltet werden kann, um normative Weiblichkeitsideale und traditionelle Geschlechterrollen zu dekonstruieren. Dabei dienen Darstellungen von Sexualität, Gewalt und Körperlichkeit als Strategien der Kritik an patriarchalen Strukturen, internalisierter Misogynie und struktureller Diskriminierung, während transgressive Handlungen als Ausdruck von Widerstand fungieren. Die Prosopographie besteht aus nunmehr sieben Bänden, die innerhalb von vier Jahren publiziert wurden. Selten ist ein so umfangreiches Werk - erfaßt sind etwa 11.500 Personen von der Zeit des ungefähren Beginns der mittelbyzantinischen Zeit (641) bis zum Herrschaftsantritt der makedonischen Dynastie (867) - in einem so kurzen Zeitraum erschienen. Die zweite Abteilung der Prosopographie wird etwa den gleichen Umfang haben und die Zeit der makedonischen Dynastie abdecken (867 - 1025).

In keiner Disziplin wird soviel mit Abkürzungen gearbeitet wie in der Rechtswissenschaft. Es gibt kaum einen juristischen Text, der nicht eine Abkürzung enthielte. In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical.
Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders.
The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.

The idea of abolishing death was one of the most influential myth-making concepts expressed in Russian literature from 1900 to 1930, especially in the works of writers who attributed a "life-modeling" function to art. To them, art was to create a life so aesthetically organized and perfect that immortality would be an inevitable consequence.

This idea was mirrored in the thought of some who believed that the political revolution of 1917 would bring about a revolution in basic existential facts: specifically, the belief that communism and the accompanying advance of science would ultimately be able to bestow physical immortality and to resurrect the dead. According to one variant, for example, the dead were to be resurrected by extrapolation from the traces of their labor left in the material world.

The author finds the seeds of this extraordinary concept in the erosion of traditional religion in late-nineteenth-century Russia. Influenced by the new power of scientific inquiry, humankind appropriated various divine attributes one after the other, including omnipotence and omniscience, but eventually even aiming toward the realization of individual, physical immortality, and thus aspiring to equality with God. Writers as different as the "decadent" Fyodor Sologub, the "political" Maxim Gorky, and the "gothic" Nikolai Ognyov created works for making mortals into gods, transforming the raw materials of current reality into legend.

The book first outlines the ideological context of the immortalization project, notably the impact of the philosophers Fyodorov and Solovyov. The remainder of the book consists of close readings of texts by Sologub, Gorky, Blok, Ognyov, and Zabolotsky. Taken together, the works yield the "salvation program" that tells people how to abolish death and live forever in an eternal, self-created cosmos—gods of a legend that was made possible by creative artists, imaginative scientists, and inspired laborers.

Climate destruction is a problem of political power.

We have the resources for a green transition, but how can we neutralize the influence of Exxon and Shell? Abolishing Fossil Fuels argues that the climate movement has started to turn the tide against fossil fuels, just too gradually. The movement’s partial victories show us how the industry can be further undermined and eventually abolished. Activists have been most successful when they’ve targeted the industry’s enablers: the banks, insurers, and big investors that finance its operations, the companies and universities that purchase fossil fuels, and the regulators and judges who make life-and-death rulings about pipelines, power plants, and drilling sites. This approach has jeopardized investor confidence in fossil fuels, leading the industry to lash out in increasingly desperate ways. The fossil fuel industry’s financial and legal enablers are also its Achilles heel.

The most powerful movements in US history succeeded in similar ways. The book also includes an in-depth analysis of four classic victories: the abolition of slavery, battles for workers’ rights in the 1930s, Black freedom struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, and the fight for clean air. Those movements inflicted costs on economic elites through strikes, boycotts, and other mass disruption. They forced some sectors of the ruling class to confront others, which paved the way for victory. Electing and pressuring politicians was rarely the movements’ primary focus. Rather, gains in the electoral and legislative realms were usually the byproducts of great upsurges in the fields, factories, and streets.

Those historic movements show that it’s very possible to defeat capitalist sectors that may seem invulnerable. They also show us how it can be done. They offer lessons for building a multiracial, working-class climate movement that can win a global green transition that’s both rapid and equitable.

Undercover agents infiltrate BlackLivesMatter protests. Police routinely command bystanders to stop filming them by falsely claiming it is a crime. Agricultural states such as Iowa, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming enact laws that criminalize the filming of factory farm cruelty while allowing other-than-human animal suffering to continue unabated. Dissent and poverty are increasingly criminalized by the state as precarity grows.

Abolishing Surveillance offers the first in-depth study of how various communities and activist organizations are resisting such efforts by integrating digital media activism into their actions against state surveillance and repression and for a better world. The book focuses on a wide array of movements within the United States such as Latinx copwatching groups in New York City, Muslim and Arab American communities in Minneapolis, undercover animal rights activists, and countersummit protesters to explore the ways in which government surveillance and repression impacts them and, more importantly, their different but related online and offline tactics and strategies employed for self-determination and liberation. Digital media production becomes a core element in such organizing as cell phones and other forms of handheld technology become more ubiquitous. What you are holding in your hands is not a finished product. But it is the product of the first year of our work at the Du Bois Movement School. And what a year it has been. The Du Bois Movement School was the product of a particular time and place. We came together amid the long wake of the 2020 rebellions, which mobilized hundreds of thousands nationwide and pushed abolitionist narratives into the mainstream. This raised pressing questions for abolitionists across the country and the world, and more than any other, the question was this: what do we mean when we say abolition?

The system had two responses to this question: co-optation and counterinsurgency. While sectors of the political and media apparatus have embraced the language of abolition (and decolonization) to water down and co-opt them, the state has also subjected revolutionary abolitionists to severe repression—we experienced both in Philly. In this context, we engaged in conversations among movement educators and radical organizers across the city to ask what kind of political education would help to take abolitionist struggles to the next level. We realized that this required not only training in concrete organizing skills but real understanding of the world, history, economics, and power. We realized that we need to study our world if we want to change it.
