This book focuses on Abraham Abulafia's esoteric thought in relation to Maimonides, Maimonideans, and Islamic thought in the line of Leo Strauss' theory of the history of philosophy. A survey of Abulafia's sources leads into an analysis of the esoteric meaning on the famous parable of the three rings, considering also the possible connection between this parable, which Abdulafia inserted into a book dedicated to his student, the 13th century rabbi Nathan the wise, and the Lessing's Play "Nathan the Wise."

This book, emphasizing Genesis 14 and Psalm 110, contributes to the history of composition of the patriarchal narratives in the book of Genesis and to the history of theology of the Second Temple period.
Genesis 14 was added on a late stage and in two steps: first, Genesis 14* and later, the so-called Melchizedek episode (ME, vv. 18-20). Genesis 14 is the result of inner-biblical exegesis: both Genesis 14* and the later ME originated from scribal activity in which several earlier biblical texts have served as templates/literary building blocks.
As for Genesis 14*, in particular three text groups were important: the Table of Nations, the wilderness wandering narratives and annals from the Deuteronomistic History. As for the ME, it is an example of haggadic exegesis presupposing and without any prehistory independent of its narrative framework. ME is the result of an assimilation between two texts, Genesis 14* and Psalm 110, which assumedly at one point were read as a narrative and a poetic version respectively of Abraham’s war with the kings.
Genesis 14 has no value as a source to the history of the patriarchal era and to the religion of pre-Israelite Jerusalem. In contrast, it shows how post-exilic scribes’ painstaking study of biblical texts resulted in the creation of new biblical texts.

The title of Nowell's sermon was well chosen. Abraham of the Old Testament resonated deeply with New England men, as he embodied the ideal of the householder-patriarch, at once obedient to God and the unquestioned leader of his family and his people in war and peace. Yet enemies challenged Abraham's authority in New England: Indians threatened the safety of his household, subordinates in his own family threatened his status, and wives and daughters taken into captivity became baptized Catholics, married French or Indian men, and refused to return to New England.

In a bold reinterpretation of the years between 1620 and 1763, Ann M. Little reveals how ideas about gender and family life were central to the ways people in colonial New England, and their neighbors in New France and Indian Country, described their experiences in cross-cultural warfare. Little argues that English, French, and Indian people had broadly similar ideas about gender and authority. Because they understood both warfare and political power to be intertwined expressions of manhood, colonial warfare may be understood as a contest of different styles of masculinity. For New England men, what had once been a masculinity based on household headship, Christian piety, and the duty to protect family and faith became one built around the more abstract notions of British nationalism, anti-Catholicism, and soldiering for the Empire.

Based on archival research in both French and English sources, court records, captivity narratives, and the private correspondence of ministers and war officials, Abraham in Arms reconstructs colonial New England as a frontier borderland in which religious, cultural, linguistic, and geographic boundaries were permeable, fragile, and contested by Europeans and Indians alike.

This volume addresses three very important guiding questions

(1) What are the existing structures that isolate/discriminate against Latinas/os in higher education?
(2) How can Latinas/os disrupt these to achieve work-life balance?
(3) Based on their experiences, what are the transformative ideologies regarding Latinas/os seeking work-life balance?

Abril no quería ser flaca. Envidiaba las curvas de sus compañeras. Al final, llegó la pubertad y se fue la delgadez. Hoy, contra sus deseos, ostenta la etiqueta de gorda. Sudaderas extragrandes, comidas clandestinas y burlas de sus compañeros son su calvario. 

Su madre (no lo sabe, pero su etiqueta es maléfica) le da una brillante idea: dieta rigurosa y ejercicio al límite. ¿Resultado? Más angustia. Hasta que un día una supuesta nutrióloga le da un medicamento.  

Entonces el calvario se convierte en un infierno. Abril deberá probar que puede salir de allí.

A novel about the body: its weakness, but, above all, its strength. 

April didn't want to be skinny. She envied the curves of her teammates. In the end, puberty came and thinness went away. Today, against her wishes, she is labeled fat. Oversized sweatshirts, clandestine meals and taunts from his peers are his ordeal. 

His mother (she doesn't know it, but her label is evil) gives him a brilliant idea: rigorous diet and extreme exercise. Result? More anguish. Until one day a supposed nutritionist gives her some medicine. 

Then the ordeal turns into hell. April will have to prove that he can get out of there.

Für die Neuauflage des bewährten Studienbuchs wurden in erster Linie Druckfehler der vorausgegangenen überarbeiteten Auflage beseitigt. Erstmals beigegeben wurde eine Karte mit der geographischen Verbreitung der mittelhochdeutschen Dialekte.

Der »Abriß der althochdeutschen Grammatik« ist als erste Einführung in das Studium des Althochdeutschen und Altsächsischen gedacht und auf sprachgeschichtlicher Grundlage aufgebaut. Die vorliegende Auflage bietet eine neubearbeitete Einleitung und Erweiterungen in der Beschreibung des Verbums.

Die Kastelle des staufischen Kaisers Friedrich II. (1194-1250) im Königreich Sizilien haben seit jeher wegen ihrer Architektur die Kunsthistoriker interessiert, während der gut organisierte Verwaltungsapparat, der nach dem Ende der Staufer von Karl I. von Anjou (1226-1285) weiter ausgebaut wurde, die Aufmerksamkeit der Historiker fand. Die diesbezüglichen Dokumente, die im Staatsarchiv Neapel aufbewahrt wurden, sind 1943 einem von deutschen Truppen angesteckten Brand zum Opfer gefallen, so dass das von Eduard Sthamer (†1938) gesammelte Material Quellenwert bekommen hat. Sthamer hatte 1912 und 1926 die Dokumente zu den Kastellen in den heutigen Regionen Apulien und Basilicata ediert (Nachdruck 1997), den noch ausstehenden dritten Band mit den Dokumenten zu den Kastellen in den restlichen Regionen Süditaliens aber nicht mehr fertig stellen können. Das von ihm dafür gesammelte Material wurde erst 1993 wiederentdeckt und jetzt von Hubert Houben ediert. Damit wird nach 100 Jahren das 1905 vom damaligen Preußischen Historischen Institut (später Deutsches Historisches Institut) in Rom begonnene Projekt zur interdisziplinären Erforschungen der Bauten der Hohenstaufen in Unteritalien hinsichtlich der Edition der Schriftquellen abgeschlossen. Die edierten Urkunden sind wichtig für die Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte, die mittelalterliche Bautechnik, aber auch für die Verwaltungs- und Landesgeschichte Süditaliens im 13. Jahrhundert.

The story of a former slave and America’s first Black Episcopal priest is an inspiring model for living a full life of service and love.

This book, appropriate for children but engaging enough for adults, begins by describing the reality of slavery during Jones’s life. Absalom Jones purchased his wife’s freedom before his own and dedicated himself to living the Christian faith. Through the difficulties and challenges of his time, he answered the call to serve the church and was ordained a priest and deacon to serve the first Black Episcopal Church in the United States.

The first Black priest in the Anglican Communion continues to be one of the most important historical figures in the Episcopal Church. As the church pays attention to its own sins of racism, this book offers encouragement, guidance, hope, and inspiration. Jones’s life is an example of what it means to follow Jesus through faithful, courageous, and selfless living of the way of love.

Der Erste Weltkrieg war der erste große bewaffnete Konflikt, der umfassend fotografisch festgehalten wurde – nicht ohne Grund fand die „Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts" in Form seiner fotografischen Wiedergabe Eingang ins kollektive Gedächtnis.

Am Beispiel von Fotografien, die im Ersten Weltkrieg veröffentlicht wurden, untersucht das Buch auf ungewöhnliche Weise, wie die österreichischen Illustrierten die Aufgabe erfüllten, mit Bildern Emotionen zu schüren und zu kanalisieren: sie zu kollektivieren.

Der historische Teil leistet die Kontextualisierung der Aufnahmen in technik- und fotografiegeschichtlicher sowie sozioökonomischer Hinsicht. Im literarischen Teil sieht man einem fiktiven Pressefotografen bei der Arbeit zu, der die im wissenschaftliche Text behandelten Aufnahmen anfertigt.

Abschiede sind ein universelles Element der menschlichen Erfahrung, ihre situativen Ausprägungen und ihre kommunikative Gestaltung variieren jedoch stark. Die historisch-pragmatische und kulturanalytische Studie von Juliane Schröter ist dem Wandel des Abschiednehmens im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gewidmet. Dargestellt werden die Geschichte des Abschiedsbegriffs, die Geschichte von Abschiedsgrüßen und umfangreicheren dialogischen Verabschiedungen, von Briefschlüssen und von ,Populärpoesie‘ zum Abschied. Dabei zeichnen sich in den detaillierten Analysen von Wörterbüchern, literarischen Abschiedsszenen, Anstandsbüchern, Originalbriefen, Briefstellern, Abschiedsgedichten etc. weitreichende übergreifende Wandeltendenzen ab. Diese deuten darauf hin, dass die kommunikative Kultur des Abschiednehmens nicht nur zutiefst von den Bedingungen menschlicher Kontakte geprägt ist, sondern sich auch selbst nachhaltig auf soziale Relationen und Strukturen auswirkt. Die Geschichte des Abschiednehmens erweist sich damit als essentieller Teil der Geschichte menschlicher Beziehungen.

Die Arbeit untersucht ein zentrales und umfängliches Corpus spätmittelalterlicher Geschichtsdichtungen vom 14. Jahrhundert bis zur Reformation, das bis heute im toten Winkel der Geschichtswissenschaft, Publizistik und Germanistik liegt und seit 150 Jahren unter dem irreführenden Terminus 'historische Volkslieder' firmiert. Nach einer grundlegenden Revision der Texte und der Beobachtung ihrer situativen Anbindung an ein historisches Ereignis wird der Nachweis geführt, daß sinnvoll von einer eigenen Gattung auszugehen ist, die sich durch eine zweckgebundene Ästhetik, spezifische Funktionen und einen hohen Grad an Publizität auszeichnet: die historisch-politische Ereignisdichtung. Warum die propagandistischen Lieder und Reimreden zur Tagespolitik von der Forschung so konsequent ignoriert wurden, ist umso unverständlicher als diese Vernachlässigung in krassem Gegensatz steht zu dem breiten Interesse, das die spätmittelalterliche Gesellschaft an ihnen genommen hat. Übersehen worden ist bislang auch, daß schon so früh - z. T. noch vor den neuen Publikationsmöglichkeiten im Medium des Buchdrucks - an der Konstitution von Öffentlichkeit und öffentlicher Meinung gearbeitet wurde, Kategorien, die man immer genuin neuzeitlich definiert hat. Der spezifische Reiz dieser poetischen Manifestationen der politischen Publizistik liegt in ihrem Zeugnischarakter für die Mentalitätsgeschichte. Die von den Verfassern getroffene Wahl des aktuellen Ereignisses, ihre aggressiv polemische oder eher vorsichtig insinuierende Präsentation und die explizite Wendung an ein informiertes und hochmotiviertes Publikum gewähren Einblicke in politische Ansichten, soziale Empfindlichkeiten, Existenzängste und Glaubensnöte des spätmittelalterlichen Menschen wie kaum eine andere literarische Form oder historische Quelle der Zeit.

Die Aufsatzsammlung zur Literar- und Redaktionsgeschichte der Bücher Genesis bis Josua bietet programmatisch forschungsgeschichtlich und einzelexegetisch orientierte Beiträge, die die Problematik der Jahwistenhypothese aufzeigen und neue Wege zu einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Interpretation des literarischen Befundes im Hexateuch, zumal in seinen nichtpriesterschriftlichen Teilen, beschreiten.

Die einzelnen Beiträge stammen von international anerkannten Alttestamentlern aus Europa, Israel und den USA. Im einzelnen sind beteiligt: A. Graeme Auld, Uwe Becker, Joseph Blenkinsopp, Erhard Blum, Thomas B. Dozeman, William Johnstone, Ernst Axel Knauf, Reinhard Gregor Kratz, Albert de Pury, Thomas Römer, Hans-Christoph Schmitt, Jean Louis Ska.

Die Kontroverse um den NATO-Doppelbeschluss und die Nachrüstung erschütterte die westdeutsche Gesellschaft in den 1980er Jahren. Besonders schwer traf sie die Sozialdemokraten, die gespalten waren zwischen der Politik ihres Kanzlers Helmut Schmidt und der Friedensbewegung. Jan Hansen untersucht diesen Nachrüstungsstreit auf breiter Quellenbasis. Er zeigt, dass Teile der SPD den Kalten Krieg für anachronistisch hielten, lange bevor er tatsächlich an sein Ende kam. Auf den Prüfstand gelangte dabei nicht nur der ideologische Gegensatz zwischen den Supermächten, sondern auch der sozialdemokratische Politikbegriff. Der Konflikt veränderte die SPD und führte dazu, dass sich die Partei stärker als zuvor gesamtgesellschaftlichen Transformationen anpasste.

2016 Neue Herausgeberschaft

Elisabeth Blum, Jesko Fezer, Günther Fischer, Angelika Schnell

Die nicht zu Unrecht legendär genannte Schriftenreihe zu Geschichte und Theorie von Architektur und Städtebau wurde 1963 von Ulrich Conrads gegründet und seit den frühen 1980er Jahren zusammen mit Peter Neitzke herausgegeben. Sie ist mit inzwischen über 150 Bänden die umfangreichste deutschsprachige Buchreihe zu diesen Themen. Mit dem Tod der beiden langjährigen Herausgeber Ulrich Conrads (2013) und Peter Neitzke (2015) hat ein neues HerausgeberInnengremium seine Arbeit aufgenommen: Elisabeth Blum, Jesko Fezer, Günther Fischer, Angelika Schnell. Als künftige HerausgeberInnen versuchen wir auf Kurs zu bleiben.

Die ursprüngliche Zielsetzung der Reihe, eine Bestandsaufnahme der baulichen und städtebaulichen Ideen und Realisierungen des 20. Jahrhunderts zu leisten, wurde bereits in herausragender Weise erfüllt. Die Bauwelt Fundamente repräsentieren geradezu die Ideengeschichte des Planens und Bauens jener Zeit bis in die Gegenwart hinein. Diese gilt es in die Zukunft hinein fortzuschreiben.

In gleicher Weise besteht der zweite, direkt im Namen verankerte Anspruch der Reihe unvermindert fort: nicht Tagesmeinungen, sondern Fundamente – Verbindliches und Grundlegendes – aber auch Thesen- und Streitschriften zu den brennenden architektonischen und städtebaulichen Themen der Zeit zu veröffentlichen. Komplexe Zusammenhänge zu durchdringen und probeweise einzuordnen bildet die Voraussetzung fruchtbarer Diskurse und zukunftsfähiger Auseinandersetzungen.

Die Bauwelt Fundamente-Reihe legt als Forum solcher Diskurse und Beiträge ihren Fokus unvermindert auf die Bereiche Architektur und Urbanismus, ergänzt durch die immer notwendige historische Aufarbeitung wichtiger Fragen und Texte und den Blick darüber hinaus in andere kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Gefilde. Eine stärker internationale Ausrichtung und der Wunsch nach mehr Autorinnen sind hierbei selbstverständlich.

Die grafische Gestaltung der Reihe von Helmut Lortz wird in Bezug auf seine ursprünglichen Anliegen beibehalten: Wie sich das für eine Arbeitsbücherei gehört, bleiben die Bauwelt Fundamente einfach ausgestattet: Schwarz/weiß das Signet sowie die Bildmotive von Vorder- und Rückseite und der 11-Zeiler mit konzentrierter Information zum Inhalt. Damit wenden sich die Bauwelt Fundamente auch weiterhin an alle, die Anteil nehmen an der kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung, in deren Kontext Städte, Häuser und Dinge entstehen und die wiederum Kontexte schaffen für die Welt. „Architekten hätten sich, heißt es – oder hofft man – immer schon, über die Grenzen ihres Berufs hinaus, für die Welt interessiert."
