This volume contains an introduction to the origins of literary symbolism, followed by about 4,000 works relevant to the Renaissance period, most with long or short commentaries, divided into about 50 categories (from “Allegories” to “Wands”) with a cross-category authors index, as well as information on further reading.
Robin Raybould is an independent scholar specializing in the symbolic literature of the European Renaissance. Educated in the UK he now lives in New York City. He has published books and articles on the subject and translated seminal texts as well as written award winning historical novels. His interest has been supported by his collection of early printed books on the subject, 200 of which he has recently donated to his Alma Mater in the UK.
