The Dom language of Aleppo is an oral minority language of Indo-Aryan origin spoken by dispersed populations formerly of northern Syria, many of whom have now dispersed throughout the Middle East, Western Europe and North Africa. It belongs to the group of Indo-Aryan diaspora languages like Romani spoken by groups who historically specialised in itinerant service economies. The Dom variety of Aleppo is part of a dialect continuum in the eastern Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, closely related to the speech of the Dom community of Jerusalem. The book provides ethnographic background and a comprehensive grammatical description exemplified through biographical narratives.
