Jennifer Monson is an American dancer and choreographer. She has been actively creating dance work since the 1980s. She works with dance improvisation and creates choreography that seems improvised. Monson grew up in southern California and, at one point, wanted to be a park ranger. In 2000 Monson received the Creative Capital Performing Arts Award.
Monson has received a Guggenheim Fellowship (2003), a Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art Fellowship (1998), the Lambent Fellowship in the Arts (2007), the National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer’s Fellowship (1989, 1992, 1993-95, 1995-97), and the New York Foundation for the Arts Artist’s Fellowship (1989, 1998, 2008).
In 2004, Monson incorporated under the name iLAND Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art, Nature, and Dance. This dance research organization upholds a fundamental commitment to environmental sustainability as it relates to art and the urban context and cultivates cross-disciplinary research among the arts, environmental science, urban design and other related fields.
