What is the relationship between capitalism and the digital? Is the seamless integration between capital and digitality merely the result of a serendipitous encounter between this mode of production and the invention of the digital computer, or is it possible to identify deeper continuities at work? This book seeks to articulate a materialist answer to this question by drawing on various strands of contemporary Marxist theory to reconceptualise digital technologies and capitalist society as sharing a common logic of abstraction and abjection. It argues that the digital recapitulates specific aspects of capitalist abstraction, manifested as a discretising logic and content-indifferent formalism underpinning both computational machines and the social relations theorised within the Marxian tradition under the concept of value.
