Horticulture covers the production and sale of many of the staple foods of the world; fruit, nuts and vegetables. As pressures on food production increase through a reduction in available land and the increasing population, more intensive production also leads to more issues with pest insects. Biopesticides, based on a range of actives from microbes to plant extracts, have the potential to fill the gap in the pest control arsenal left as more synthetic pesticides are withdrawn from use. In this review we consider mainly biopesticide approaches which use microbial entomopathogens, and discuss what is new in their development and use.
