This book provides an in-depth account of intra-Shi'i political dynamics in Lebanon between 1982 and 2022. It focuses on intra-Shi'i politics, examining the rise of Amal and Hezbollah as the dominant Shi'i political organizations (and militias) throughout the past four decades. The book aims to present an original analysis of how the two movements effectively elevated the Shi'a community from a politically marginalized position to the forefront of Lebanon's politics, leading to what some analysts describe as the 'era of political Shi'ism'. Between 1982 and 2022, significant events marked watershed moments in Lebanese and Shi'i history. These events propelled Amal, and later Hezbollah, to prominence in Lebanese politics. The book also analyzes the factors that influenced the transition of the two movements from periods of violent conflict and rivalry in the 1980s and 1990s to unity post-2005. It will examine the sustainability of this state of unity two decades after its formation, especially in light of the Hezbollah-Israeli war of 2024, which significantly weakened the former. The book also draws on political science debates about sectarianism, group identity and nationalism to examine how changes in intra-Shi'i dynamics shape both intra-sectarian and inter-sectarian relations.
