Animating the Voice represents the first book-length academic study of the voice in animation. Surveying over one hundred years of Disney and Pixar feature animation, Colleen Montgomery considers the key role of the voice in the production, marketing, and transnational distribution and exhibition of animated features. Expansive in historical and theoretical scope, this multidimensional study of the media industry blends film history and feminism with methodologies from sound studies and translation studies to analyze the integral functions the voice performs in the commercial life cycle of an animated film and to probe the relationships between race, gender, vocality, and identity in animation.
