How do we reimagine architecture on a burning planet, facing a climate crisis driven by a fossil fuel economy and profit-driven, limitless growth? Instead of relying on depoliticized greenwashing, how can we envision and practice architecture with optimism? This book begins with the conviction that the way forward demands a radical reimagining of architecture—not only as a discipline, but also as a practice. It explores non-extractive ways of practicing, building, and unbuilding architecture for a future less reliant on carbon, highlighting specific inner workings of architectural practice that imagine alternative futures and their stories. The book opens with an introductory essay, followed by seven chapters, each focused on a project from the author’s architecture practice, NEMESTUDIO.
Neyran Turan is professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and a founding partner at NEMESTUDIO. Turan's work explores the role of architecture in the climate crisis. Her most recent work expands this scope into the interaction between alternative forms of planetary imagination and architectural practice.
Turan's practice, NEMESTUDIO, has received widespread recognition and numerous awards, including the 2024 Architectural Record's Design Vanguard award, 2016 Architectural League New York Prize for Young Architects, seven separate awards in The Architects' Newspaper Best of Design Awards between 2016 and 2024, Best of Year Honoree Award from Interior Design Magazine, multiple accolades from the Core 77 Design Awards, several ACSA Faculty Design Awards for outstanding design work in architecture and related environmental design fields as a critical endeavor, and multiple Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts Awards.
Turan's Master of Architecture thesis sequence was recognized with a Creative Achievement Award by The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2025, which honors her creative achievements in teaching that advances architectural education.
Turan curated the Turkish Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale. She is the founding chief editor of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design journal New Geographies and served as the editor-in-chief for its first two volumes.
