In Art, politics, and spectacle in the early modern Netherlands: gift-giving at home and abroad, Carrie Anderson demonstrates that early modern Dutch diplomacy was shaped as much by images, material culture, and performative displays, as it was by diplomats, envoys, and treaties. For the Dutch Republic, newcomers to the world stage, representations of gifts presentations, in print and paint, served an overtly political function that helped shape their diplomatic agendas at home and abroad. As global trade networks expanded and increased in complexity, Dutch representatives gained political capital through multisensory persuasion, a diplomatic tactic that embraced optic, haptic, olfactory, gustatory, and auditory stimuli.
