What does it mean to write in Portuguese from Asia, today? This book introduces a new field of study — Asian Literatures in Portuguese — comparatively examining eight contemporary authors from Goa, Macau, and Timor-Leste whose work has been doubly marginalised within both Lusophone and Asian studies, as it resists integration into national models of literature. You will encounter the Eurasian novelist Henrique de Senna Fernandes, the Catholic Brahmin writer João da Veiga Coutinho, the award-winning East Timorese novelist Luís Cardoso, and the multilingual Chinese poet Yao Feng, among others. Drawing on comparative literature, postcolonial theory, and archival research, this study reveals the longest-standing intellectual tradition from Asia in a European language.
