Cost pressure, the multiplication of construction and design standards, and increasing expectations regarding the flexibility of living space—with Ausbauhaus, the Berlin architectural duo Praeger Richter has offered one much-noticed answer to the challenges currently facing housing construction. The volume examines this modular concept, which makes it possible to build adaptive basic apartments using a cost-effective, robust basic structure consisting of a frame and shell. Focusing on two Ausbauhäuser that have already been realized in Berlin-Neukölln and Berlin-Lichtenberg, the book considers issues of planning, architecture, society, law, and economics to question existing standards for building and shed light on principles for individually setting frames, do-it-yourself construction, referencing urban contexts, and ecological development. It also shows how the principles of the Ausbauhaus, which have been well proven for owner builders, can be applied to the building of subsidized rental apartments, as documented in the Frankfurt apartment building Hilgenfeld.
