A new and comprehensive analysis of the 1867 dualist settlement and the formation of Austria-Hungary, from its conception to implementation. Exploring important events, key figures, and individual case studies, the analysis is underpinned by three themes: regionally-centred perspectives, the mechanics of government, and the emergence of participatory political cultures. Leading researchers, working in multiple languages and across a variety of topics, have contributed to this fresh, integrated investigation and interpretation.
Jonathan Kwan is a Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Nottingham. His publications include Liberalism and the Habsburg Monarchy, 1861-1895 (Palgrave, 2013) and various journal articles. At present he is researching the life of Napoleon II, The Duke of Reichstadt
