The present volume is a collection of fourteen original papers selected from those presented at the first US installment of Chronos: International Conference on Tense, Aspect, Mood and Modality, which took place at the University of Texas at Austin in October, 2008. The volume serves as an excellent forum for international scholars working on expressions of on tense, aspect, mood and modality. It contains papers dealing with a diverse variety of languages ranging from well studied languages like English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Japanese, to less known ones like Basque, Chamorro, Iquito, Australian English and Singlish. Chiyo Nishida is Associate Professor of Spanish linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on Spanish syntax, with a particular interest in the behavior of pronominal clitics. She has published on such topics as the reflexive clitic se and eventualities, the second-position clitics in Old Spanish, and restructuring. She is also one of the few to apply Categorial Grammar to the analysis of Spanish syntax. Her recent research interests include argument realization and second language acquisition of the subjunctive mood.
Cinzia Russi is Associate Professor of Italian and Romance Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. She specializes in historical linguistics particularly in the framework of grammaticalization. Currently her primary research interests focus on the grammaticalization of the Italian and Romance clitic pronouns, the origin and evolution of Italian verbi procomplementari, and the analysis of Italian verbs denoting the notions of lack and necessity, and the evolution of Italian and French aspectual verbs. She is the author of Italian Clitics. An Empirical Study (Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter, 2008).
