In his first volume, Usher compelled a “rewrite [of] history,” contributing a “first-rate” biography with “amazing” archival research and detail, but that was only half the story. In his follow-up volume, Usher completes the “unusually rich” story of the “illustrious” Polhill including never-before-seen archival photographs from the extensive Polhill Collection. The reader is left with an inescapable sense of inspiration from this presentation of Polhill’s extraordinary life and Usher’s conclusions which are both satisfying yet provocative. Included in the appendix, are the never-before-published memoirs of the two Polhill brothers, Two Etonians in China (1885-1925): Reminiscences of Two of the ‘Cambridge Seven’ Missionary Band, with original photographs and annotations.
