Non-invasive and micro-destructive analytical chemistry techniques for the investigation of cultural heritage are presented by experts in the field.

In particular, after a general overview on materials used in works of art and archaeological objects, Part I discusses the theoretical foundations of the various techniques and methods, based on spectroscopy, chromatography and mass spectrometry, currently used for elemental and molecular identification; limits and potentials are highlighted by significant applications.

Part II reports selected case studies, where possible ways to investigate paintings, glass objects, ceramics, metals, illuminated manuscripts, and inks, both in ancient and modern works of art, are described.
