China is emerging as an economic, political, and technological powerhouse, whose influence is increasingly felt worldwide. Today, China’s economy and society are advanced and sophisticated, yet its autocratic political order does not resemble Western countries. China’s transformation challenges many Western assumptions, from authoritarian adaptability and democratisation to innovation ability. It is essential to understand the basics of the Chinese political system, how it works, and why. Unlike other university textbooks on China's political system, we take a broader view and argue that one needs to clearly distinguish between the concepts of political order, political system, political regimes, and actual politics.
