Closing the Leadership Loop: Sustainability and Legacy Building for Late-Career Educational Leaders examines a critical but often overlooked stage in the educational leadership journey: the late-career phase. While much attention has been given to preparing aspiring leaders and supporting novice and mid-career principals, comparatively less consideration has been given to how experienced leaders can remain purposeful, influential, and professionally fulfilled as they approach the latter stages of their careers. This edited volume reframes late-career leadership not as a period of withdrawal but as a powerful opportunity for renewal, mentorship, and legacy building.

Bringing together conceptual, empirical, and reflective chapters, the book explores how late-career principals, middle leaders, academic leaders, and retired educational leaders can use their institutional knowledge and professional wisdom to strengthen schools and educational institutions. Contributors examine issues such as academic change management, professional learning for experienced middle leaders, knowledge management, succession planning, and the strategic use of institutional memory to build leadership capacity and sustain organizational effectiveness. The volume also recognizes that late-career leaders themselves require support as they navigate the demands of leadership, the transition toward retirement, and the desire to leave meaningful legacies. Chapters on psychological well-being, work-life balance, retirement transition, and authentic leadership highlight the personal, ethical, and institutional dimensions of finishing well in educational leadership.

With a strong Caribbean focus and clear relevance to global leadership contexts, this book is a valuable resource for principals, aspiring leaders, leadership educators, policymakers, school boards, ministries of education, and researchers. It invites readers to reconsider the final stage of leadership as a time for purposeful contribution, transforming experience into wisdom, wisdom into mentorship, and mentorship into lasting institutional capacity.

Ιn the field of educational leadership, considerable attention has been placed on the preparation and development of aspiring and mid-career leaders, often overlooking the lived experiences, knowledge, and wisdom of late-career leaders. As an academic in educational leadership, I have been fortunate to learn from distinguished scholars whose careers have spanned decades of service and who now hold emeritus positions. Against this backdrop, this edited volume by Marshall and Jackman makes an important contribution by bringing to the forefront an overlooked stage of the leadership journey. Through its focus on sustainability, succession planning, mentorship, knowledge transfer, well-being, and legacy building, the volume highlights the value of leadership beyond formal roles and retirement. In doing so, the chapters demonstrate that the knowledge and expertise accumulated by late-career leaders are not merely personal assets but important resources that can inform policy, leadership development, professional learning and future generations of leaders.

This book is a timely and significant contribution to scholarship on educational leadership, succession planning, organisational learning, and institutional sustainability. At a time when educational systems are confronting leadership shortages, increasing accountability pressures, and the impending retirement of experienced leaders, this volume offers a compelling framework that highlights the often-overlooked value of contributions of late-career educational leaders as custodians of institutional knowledge, mentors of emerging leaders, and architects of sustainable organisational change.
